The fact that this came from Germany does not surprise me one bit: I saw the best Black talent on German TV when I was stationed in Rhein Main and Ramstein Air Bases in the mid to late 70's: live performances by The Golden Gate Quartet, Etta James, Betty Wright, Esther Phillips--who was given a TV special that I captured, recorded and will be releasing. Sadly, none of the rare talent, including all of the legendary Shakedown clip performers, could hardly be seen on American television.

This is so great. Note how LONG it is. TV shows would NEVER give this kind of time to a bunch of people blowing harmonica. Not even any singing. Gotta love the Germans.

It does not get much better than this. There's Duffy nowadays doing 'Who's Been Talking' but renamed 'Mercy', and many will borrow and steal from these originators. But - they won't eclipse them, they won't steal the brilliance that's in this video as proof of who really had the blues clues!

What a time, what a time, what a time. I consider myself a real blues fan, but I have never heard John Lee Hooker play the harmonica. These are truly blues heavyweights on stage. Elvis Presely&Janis Joplin owe some of their success to Big Mama Thorton songs. Men seemed to receive more attention in the blues, than women. But Big Mama Thorton is one of the blues greats, regardless to gender. Big Mama could hold her own.

Wow, how cool is this!?! I love all these guys and Big Mama Thornton. But I had no idea some of these people played harp! I guess all the greats played harp back then! Great footage, great musicians, great music! Thanks!

Thanks for putting this up! Big Mama Thornton wailing on harp--who knew? And John Lee Hooker. Always a treat to see the great Big Walter Horton perform. What a cool swinging performance by all.
