held very high and sometimes the shoulder may raise as well. The right bench/seat height will allow the hand and forearm to be in one piece with the elbow level with the tops of the white keys, sitting tall and allowing the upper arms to hang freely from the shoulder. Then the delicious phenomenon of equilibrium can occur! It's an awesome sensation ... effortlessness ...I encourage you to try it.

Hey, Fun dialogue! Glad someone out there is thinking. Well, in a nutshell: If pianist sits too low, the elbow falls below the level of the keyboard, and the weight and support of the forearm/hand will never get to the fingers. So, the fingers will have to grip or grab just to stay on the keyboard. These tense fingers make it really difficult to move (b/c long flexors have been activated). So, in an effort to try to overcome this and give the fingers some support, the wrist is often ...

Thank you for the detailed response. More specifically, there are pianists who use a low wrist, but they sit low also, which keeps the arm/forearm/hand in a straight line (Horowitz for example). What do you think about this?

ANSWER PART C: Whether we are from Egypt, China, male or female, we are built the same -- same muscles, ligaments, bone structure (unless there is a deformity). So, why can some pianists get away with using some less-than-perfect motions (ergonomically speaking)? As Dorothy Taubman says, "some fish get away".

ANSWER PART B: It's well known in medical field that low wrist positions (when typing etc.) lead to such conditions as carpal tunnel. Also, we move most efficiently when all the parts of our playing apparatus maintain the most natural position (examine unity of finger/hand/forearm when arm is hanging freely at the side).

Hey, good question since I used to teach phrase shaping with wrist (before I was injured and had to retrain in a healthy approach). Short answer: Many pianists are able to play well despite their technics. (more explanation to follow in 2nd post)
