conclusion: the 32x sucked and it was one of the biggest failures of all time

when was this released
By: 3yE. on 28 Sep 08, 17:40:47
No way could 32x technically change any appearance or sound of games that came before it, and considering its shortlivety probably none at all. This demo apparently does high-quality sound synthesis on one of the CPUs (there are theoretically 3 suitable for this task, the 68k, and 2xSH-2) in software and outputs a waveform. Most 32x titles would rather just use the old simple FM synthesizer from the MegaDrive/Genesis base system.

Because as 32x came out of the US, SEGA Saturn was introduced in Japan. So ongoing game development efforts were converted to the new console, which was more promising. Less cumbersome, neater, more powerful, technically building on the same foundation.

I think the 32X was the best outcome of a bad idea. You see the 32X came out just 6 months before the Saturn. So no one really took it siriusly. Probably why there was not "bright spark". They were all working on Saturn games.

Awesome!

Interesting prospect....if I get time this weekend, I might actually make one.
By: Jeegum. on 06 May 08, 08:00:28
As for graphics, personally, I don't really have any qualms there. Of course it's always nice to have something easier on the eyes. I've just been told to buy it from someone a few times as it increases performance. Damn, where's a side-by-side comparison when you need one?
By: Jeegum. on 06 May 08, 07:54:43
Thank you for the heads up. Three 32xs? It seems it's not really worth the hassle of going through. I was JUST about to ask about the sound. Have you noticed any difference with the quality of sound on the 32x? I'm mainly wondering due to the fact that I very recently played Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis/Megadrive, and the sound isn't particularly pleasing on the ears (especially when one has played the SNES version prior to this).
By: TaoNakamora. on 06 May 08, 07:15:32
If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go and try it right now. To me, it really, really makes no difference, even if it was better. The Genesis was moreso known for it's sub-par sound rather than sub-par graphics. If you DO decide to buy a 32X though, make SURE it comes with power and a Genesis-32X Connector cord. If you don't, there's no way you can play it, and buying the things separately is a pain. I, myself, have 3 32Xs, but only one is playable because of this. :-(
By: Jeegum. on 06 May 08, 04:40:01
Someone has told me a few times to buy a 32x because it makes everything smoother. I've also read a post on Gamefaqs stating that: "It has a handful of decent games and provides a very marginal boost to your Genesis games in terms of performance (primarily, a wider range of colors is present in some games)" If it looks smoother and is easier on the eyes, I may well buy it for that reason alone; but if I can't see a difference I'd be better off without it.
By: TaoNakamora. on 06 May 08, 04:18:59
Probably not. I tried it once, it didn't make much of a difference. If you really wanted to get technical, all it really does is make you channel it through the 32X into the Genesis, so, if ANYTHING (probably nothing, though) it would be worse.
By: Jeegum. on 06 May 08, 04:07:01
Is it true that Genesis/Megadrive games look nicer and run smoother with the 32x?
By: jiposphere. on 13 Apr 08, 20:52:26
If this was truely what the 32x had the power to simulate and render n all that gubbins... then how come no bright spark made a game as good as the presentation demo? The presentation demo would had made a rather nice game on its own if it had cars, buildings, plot, etc. Such a shame... Class A+ Product with potential gone to waste =[

Donkey Kong 64 was so big you needed to double the systems memory to play it! And it saved the game in less time than it took to press the button.
By: Raymiles2. on 02 Apr 08, 19:36:58
Lemon. Damn right it was a fucking lemon!
By: duncan36. on 12 Mar 08, 18:36:53
It didnt help that the early games for the system were almost all Genesis ports with a larger color palette. Or that even the 'good' 32x games didnt look noticeably better than SNES games. Also the 3d was laughably weak. My old Amiga could do almost as good 3d, and that was released in the mid 80's.

sega 32X= half assed beta to saturn? check.
By: NixonTech2071. on 25 Feb 08, 00:41:28
sooo... the 32X is a unforgivable beta to the saturn, and the only way to cover THAT up was to make it cartridge based. And even without internet, we still knew what it really was.
By: linkBIGfan. on 24 Feb 08, 02:42:47
um.....so?
By: SaitoForte. on 06 Jan 08, 21:52:02
Everyone knows that all consoles are equally inferior to the PC. You cant make games for consoles if they are weaker then them.

DING DING DING DING!!!! Also, if anyone compares Final Fantasy Xes cutscenes to the actual gameplay, it's a perfect example.
