I agree Harry was a true songwriting genius and EXTREMELY underated due to his refusal to "play the game". Good credentials when John Lennon calls you the best songwriter he ever knew. Check out "1941" and "Without You", both amazing classics by a bona fide genius.

Harry was a Musical Genius who John Lennon said was the greatest songwriter he ever knew. Harry wrote ONE, covered by Three-Dog Night. For us Baby-Boomers, He also wrote the Intro to "The Courtship of Eddy's Father," as well as many other songs. He was the MOST prolific of song writers and they were ALL different, which is GENUIS, but record companies did not like this. They always wanted to play it safe, but he never wrote for record companies...only for himself...which is the way it should be.

I'd like to see a re-make of "Duck, You Sucker" starring Pierce Brosnan as Sean and Al Pacino as Juan! This music was NOT in the original film score. I can see John McTiernan,who directed Mr. Brosnan in the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair", directing this remake of "Duck, You Sucker!". I like this music a lot! It's a haunting poetic film with a score to match. The flashbacks are masterpieces. Thank you for posting this wonderful music and visuals!!!

I read that in IMDB and it brought tears to my eyes. He adored that little girl until the day he died. There is a clip of him on Whats My Line talking about her and Mrs. Durante. You couldn't help feel the love he had for them, and the love the panelists and the audience had for Jimmy. Who didn't love this man?

I remember watching Jimmy on so many shows in the 50s and 60s as a kid. We would watch TV with our family, parents, grandparents. It was great. Everytime I hear his song or see the clips of Jimmy performing it brings back memories. Real good ones too. At almost 56 it doesn't seem so long ago. Well most of the time. :-)

yes what a great man,a great actor. what memories.I was just a kid when i saw a movie starring jimmy durante singing with that special tone of voice he had.Immediately i was impressed by this old man with a big smile a big nose a strange voice,but what we call in french a Joie de Vivre. Jimmy Durante saw they delivered margarine to their table while he was served real butter. He told the waitress to take the butter to my parents because "they deserve it more than me". There was an offbeat wacky mid/late 60's UK TV show called 'Tickertape' Jake did the title music for I vaguely remember chorus went-- "... but we can't tear ourselves away, we've got to listen what it has to say, that wittering nitwit tick-o-tape" It was strangely dark/fascinating like all JT's work and has stuck with me, wish someone would post it.

As a fellow Yorkshireman (in some respects!) I agree. He can make you laugh and smile and cry in the same song, on occasion (Ulysees!). The Ballad of Billy Kershaw is stunning, but it's the BBC 4 documentary I really want to see again. Fascinating chap. Sithee!

The first time i saw jake was at the crucible theatre in sheffield in 1971. With my mum dad and sister. By the way i was 9 and my sister 7 years old.Memory fails me as to which song my sister requested, but we left a note at the stage door, and jake announced he was singing it for Sarah, (my sister). I saw him many more times at the rockingham arms at wentworth and spoke to him several times. What a wonderful wordsmith, and very underated guitarist. Im 46 tomorrow and jake remains a hero!

Great stuff, I used to drink with Karl when he lived in Reddish in Stockport. He used to buy drinks for quite a few people in the Grey horse. He once told me, he could never go out on stage without having a glass of sherry or port, only the one it helped him hit the high notes he said. Thanks for uploading this beautiful Trenet song, one I had never heard before. And the video work makes for a splendid commercial for French tourism. But sadly, I think that the France of Trenet, of Antoine Doinel images, of Pissaro's canvases, the music of Faure and Ravel, is dead. Globalisation achieved "en douce" what 3 wars with Germany could not achieve "par force majeure." France is serenely beautiful, and very varied. The French eat and drink well. Who will revive it?
