I would always try to find this song in juke boxes at truck stop restaurants back in the 70's.... Few juke boxes around nowadays, but Tom T. Hall and this song will live forever.

You sure are right. Tom T. Hall was an original. He is definitely in the same class as Merle Haggard, George Jones and Johnny Cash. I have seen him in concert twice and he is one of the humble men you'll met, and one of the most talented. He has written over 300 songs that have been recorded by himself and others. He is a true country music legend.

It's a shame that it takes a lot of hard living to make us open our eyes and see what's really important in life. I, too, lost my dad a couple of years ago and miss him terribly. Tom does a fantastic job on this song both as a singer and a writter. In this particular version I feel the band is rushing/pushing him a bit too much. It would sound better if they'd forgotten the metronome and followed the singer and let Tom T lay down the lines. After all it's his song. Other than firing the band (or at least chewing them out) a great perfomance by one of Country's all time greats. Thanks for posting.

This is one of the most pure and beautifully written songs I've ever heard. Tom wrote it from a single experience he had, but its meaning runs much deeper than what happened with him and the old man in a single encounter. There is an amazingly beautiful life lesson in the words of this song. All of the drama and complications we bring into our daily lives is meaningless. The only things in life that really count are the things that are simple and pure.

I drove 320 miles to Marion, VA to hear him sing this and other songs last night at the Lincoln Theater. He sang it beautifully and got a standing ovation. The concert will be broadcast on PBS. I had the honor of speaking with him before the show. He is so sweet - in his on stage acknowledgments he mentioned me by name and how far I had travelled.
