In response to the comment about the sliding, one must remember that this song is being sung by a young lady in a very emotional state, I don't think that surgical notes quite cut it. For me Renee has really cracked the spirit of the song as the composer intended. Bravo Renee!

I sometimes forget how ahead of the curve Mozart was. On the one hand, this aria does the traditional Baroque A-B-A form. On the other, it precedes the bel canto era by the way we establish the emotion in a slow section, and contrast it in a faster section. Genius!

For this aria, the voice must always shine What is so difficult about this aria is that you have to sing with 'true piano' for 2-3 minutes and then you have to reach the upper register continuously, higher and higher till the end of the aria in f.

I don't know much about music/singing, but I watched renee fleming's performance then this one. And I prefer Kiri. Renee has a beautiful voice, just gorgeous but there is nothing interesting about it. Kiri grabs my attention and the sound of her voice is so different and powerful, and beautiful I loved it. She sounds like she really feels it, and Renee sounds like she is trying to make it sound pretty. Plus Kiri is hot.

I've listened closely several times, and have a problem discerning anything that isn't simply part of the expression I have grown to know and lvoe from Ms. Fleming. But I am getting older . . . perhaps the road trip got to her a little, but this is one of the more difficult vocals for a soprano. And that incredible high! What a voice! Best, Chuck

I adore her artistry but such glotal sounds were heard in this clip.. I wonder if she was having some vocal problems that night! I think even as a professional singer its important for me not to be so judgemental on my peers and idols simply because we are not machines.. its not going to be perfect EVERYTIME!! And being on the road and having to be the best I totally understand what can happen to the voice!!

She sounds old and not exquisit (legatoline and breathing are a horror) enough for that aria! She lost her qualitys because she is singing to much the heavy stuff - and her voice is not uge enough for that- only to darken the voice is not good and never enough! RENE FLEMING is a killer of her voice! Excuse I am not praud about... to say this... Normally I love her Mozart and Händel......

I totally disagree with you...Pape sings very good (especially in the tuba mirum - sadly unavailable at youtube). The one that does a weak performance is Bartoli especially when she is paired up with Augér...compare her singing with Sara Mingardo's and you will hear!

Of course not, according to Wikipedia, the original Clara was Abbie Mitchell. Renee Fleming delivered an excellent rendition of this aria nonetheless. (The legato, crescendo and diminuendo towards the end are perfect)

I know that Summertime is from Porgy and Bess but I hate it when sung with an "operatic" voice. It might fit the composer's idea but I find that it REALLY doesn't fit the song. What I meant was you would protest the idea of someone praising Luciano Pavarotti for singing Baby Got Back. This aria is from the OPERA Porgy and Bess; this is how the composer intended the performance to be. I'm not sure how the jazz version came about and I'm utmost unsure how the baby will sleep either with that jazz approach. Not trying to dispute your comment, just wanna to make sure you are aware of what you're talking about; please don't be offended. Cheers !

No words can describe what this lady does with her voice! Her ultimate technique enables her to do anything she wants with her instrument, even at the highest notes. How flexible her high C is, working it flawlessly from pianissimo to forte and back again, doing a crescendo a decrescendo on one damn high note as if it was nothing!! Or her last trill in this aria, what she does with it and how playifully she crowns it with her straight perfectly pitched pianissimo...Brava!!

I'm with you, babs22h. Renee has a fabulous voice, but absolutely no soul in this song. Now...I'm not trying to be like one of those negative posters, so I would like to say that I do appreciate you posting this here. It's just disappointing to be that Renee has to turn the song from something that has that much soul and power into a chance to show off her voice. I mean, her voice is stellar, but the high C at the end is completely unnecessary and should be relegated to vocalises, not this.

You're right -- you can do both. A lot is the difference in diction. Broadway and pop are more colloquial. In an interview, Bryn Terfel said if he was going to do Broadway he wanted to do it right, so he studied with a Broadway coach. Rene Fleming said she used to sing with big bands. Nice job!

What are you people talking about this song not being suited for her voice? The woman could sing the phone book in dissonance and make it sound like Strauss lieder. She has been good a looking Contessa and for me one of the best by tone and timbre... and only singing the Arias Jessye Norman ! Fleming is for my gout often dumping her qualities down with to much darkening and singing to hard stuff (but she started better with her great Rusalka and Mozartariaalbum). I agree. I've just listened to Janowitz and Schwarzkopf sing this. They both have beautiful, pure voices, but they both sing it more reflectively. Kiri's has that extra 'oomph' which makes you feel for the Countess. Hers sounds more 'real', not as prim/proper. Her voice is darker in colour too - adds to the pleading aspect.

I don´t know if it´s a la mode to dimiss Dame Te Kanawa recently. Even if I find the tempo a bit slow, she proves that she´s one of the greatest singers in her generation. She has managed to popularize opera on par with the three tenors and she should be given credit for her stunning achievments. Brava, Kiri!

I agree with your second comment. In fact, one of the remarkable things about Sutherland's performances were that one got the impression there was so much voice in reserve that she could immediately sing the whole opera again! Same with artists such as Nilsson and Flagstad (on live recordings). Despite the diction problems, this performance is splendid from the perspective of sheer voice and brilliant technique.

non facciamoci inflenzare dai direttori "bersaglieri" (così io li chiamo) Vivaldi merita esecutori del calibro di questa orchestra, dei suoi (giusti) tempi e di interpreti come questi superbissimi cantanti. non la "fretta" né i cosiddetti "strumenti originali" che lo mortificano. Anzi, nelle arie della Horne, Randall Behr è un tantino troppo veloce. e i solisti veneti forniscono il tempo migliore, ma solo per queste due arie. bisogna essere "brillanti" non andar "di fretta"

Forse è un'edizione datata e quindi si può passare su certe mancanze.... è tutto molto lento mentre vivaldi meriterebbe più velocità, intanto bellissimi i costumo barocchi che latitano in moltissime rappresentazioni di oggi.

oye se ve que sabes de canto.. pero debes notar como cambia el color de la voz de pavarotti.. falsette es cuando cambia el color mantenido y se nota como cambia el color de la voz de pavaroti cuando hace el do sostenido al re.. por eso considero que es falsette... no por otra cosa. pero eso no le quita maestría a pavarotti.. pero si lo tenía .. ve la versión del 81 en vivo y la canta con su color ..

ok si es un re... tenemos que ver... si es flasette o no.. pavarotti si podía cantar el re pero poco en la versión del 81 cantaba pero muy poco medio segundo en la versión en vivo... muchos dicen que no tenía el re pero si la tenía. pro era muy difickl para pavarotti darla.. el ra el rey del agudo y alfredo kraus de los sobreagudos
