One of the best bond-movies. Too bad Dalton didn't play in a third one. The actor in Casino Royale (a comedy of bond?) reminds me of this actor:watch?v=LxrJoAfvUk8. He looks like a relative of Craig. Don't get me wrong, Matula is cool. Both don't belong in a 007-movie, so I didn't watch quantum of solace (a second comedy of bond?). Casino Royale was enough lack of Style, gentlemanlike-MI6-Bussiness, Intelligence-Action.

Best damn Bond song ever IMHO...Don't know why, it's just smooth in parts, exciting in others, and just sounds unusual enough to be Bond. Also, I'm tired of all the bashing of Lazenby. Here was a guy who never acted before, taking over the shoes of a role EVERYONE wanted Connery to keep, and he held his own quite well. Not only was he the best/realistic fighter, he was humorous without overdoing it, and tough as well. had he done more, he would be at the top of most lists...again, IMHO ;-)

All Bonds we're cool! As you said Moore "funny" absolutely misguided. He is "charming" as was Connery but less so. Connery was "Dangerous, Fast Thinking". I view a True Bond as a Fast Thinker but can a person be of a slow talker and of a fast mind?... ANSWER: I think so but would be rare in our world. Memory recall is the greatest talent I believe. Dalton was not "Mysterious" but rather "Unpredictable to the simple minded or unlearned." Hope I have clarified the wine.

In my family, Connery is the "cool" Bond, Moore is the "funny" Bond, Lazenby is the "mysterious" Bond, and Dalton is the "mean" Bond. Brosnan is the "slick" Bond. No real ranking on this new guy, though.

I thought the first half of this movie was brilliant. A lot like "From Russia With Love". Unlike that movie however, this one went of the rails a bit in the second half. Seriously, who would believe hairy, 6'2 Sean Connery was Japanese? The "secret volcano lair" scenes were a bit cheesy too. Still one of the better Bond movies, but not the classic I felt it could have been.

Musically, or how the character was portrayed? I've heard all sorts opine on this matter. It's who you saw first. Older peeps tend to like the first the most. Snide remarks Bond would give after a kill were what made Bond, Bond. For me, being younger, I thought that was an Arnold-thing. Just learned this year, after seeing them all in a row, that I was wrong. I surely got into Bond with the Dalton portrayal. I'm not sure who is best, I haven't read the books. I agree with you both. The genius of someone like Barry is his ability to take a theme and have it envelop the film. You can't really divorce a Barry theme or score from the images. They scrap it in favor of Sheryl Crow but look at the outcome, Lang's version proves far more superior to Crow. I love the opening set piece when the space shuttle is hijacked in mid-air right off the back of the 747 jumbo jet killing everybody in the process. My second favorite scene is when Bond rides the gondala boat out of the water hovercraft style, you see a pidgeon watching him do a double-take! This is THE Bond film, and THE Bond song. It's massive, scary, bigger than life. Jones vocal is one of the best performances ever by a singer. As a kid in the theatre, it was just overwhelming...scared the hell out of me! As an aside, there is (at the moment) a pop up ad that says "who was the best James Bond". Give me a break. The Thunderball poster said it all: Sean Connery IS James Bond. 'Nuff said.

Some real interesting reads here. Thanks everyone. My favorite Bond film is THUNDERBALL and my second favorite is GOLDFINGER. It is intersting also that my two favorite opening themes are in these same two movies. My third favorite film is; YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and yes, I also happen to like the theme of that one aswell. I guess it is not really that much of a surpise about liking the themes of these movies since when someone likes a movie he/she will usually include the movie theme.

Hmm...that's a good question. It could apply to Bond, though the songs aren't usually that critical of him--"he'll break any heart without regret"? It might be true of Bond (though I doubt the Bond girls actually fall in love with him), but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be saying that in the song. In summary, I don't think it was *meant* to apply to Bond, but I think it *could* be applied to Bond with interesting results.

I agree with you. Tom Jones is absolutely amazing with this song. No one else has ever attempted to sing this song for one reason: they simply can't. All other Bond theme songs have been reproduced by various artists except for this one.

George Lazenby would have made a creditable Bond had he had a bit more acting under his belt at the time. I believe he was a sergent in the Australian Special Forces which helped him to get the part. The script and the casting of Telly Salvalas as Bloefeld were all wrong and some sequences seem a bit artifical although there are some good scenes. He was the top male model in Europe at the time before being cast and he has said himself that he should have done more but he walked away from it.

I personally don't like him much as Bond. Bond needs to look like a sleek British gentlemanly sort, not a rough sailor type. He's a pretty good actor though and manages to make up for that. Don't like this intro though. Chris Cornell's voice just annoys me. All I like about him is Audioslave, and that only because of Morello. And, lastly, this wasn't one of my favorite Bond movies. This week's is definitely way better.

I don't know if I would rank "Shawshank" as my favorite of all time, but it certainly was fabulous. Both M. Freeman and Robbins were fabulous, and the actors who played the warden and the top guard also added a lot to the film. Morgan's narration was out of this world .... really added a lot to the movie. He is definitely one of the great American actors.
