That's funny, I always thought the same thing. Especially since they were bassists playing in predominantly white 1980's rock bands, something which was not common in the 1980's. Of course, they were from different continents; Jeff Jones being Canadian and Tony Butler (of Big Country) being British. Cool observation, though!

Agree with your analysis, but disagree with your time frame. This song came out in 1982. "Life Is A Highway" came out in 1991, barely even a decade later. That was also a great song, albeit very different; much more in the folk/rolk singer-songrwriter tradition while this was very much in the progressive rock-band tradition of Pink Floyd. I was very happy for Tom Cochrane's comeback, as brief as it was. I think "Life" hit #1, if I remember correctly...was definitely Top 10, anyway. Peace!

the demonstration with the 2 white blocks was a poor one, because mass is directly proportional to friction the more mass the more friction,the less distance traveled, besides according to newtons second law of motion, the acceleration of the object is inversly proportional to its mass and directly proportional to the force exerted,and it can eaffect the distance traveled on the table, that was a totally poor demonstration, and it can make students think about it in the wrong way.

Good lord, you don't know what you are talking about at all! Wings are designed to have a longer path over the top, so the air has to move faster, thus the pressure above is less than below, and there is lift. That is EXACTLY the kind of thing Bernoulli's principle of pressure explains. You may know of the coanda effect, but you certainly don't understand it, or the related concepts.

In the horizontal case, the second 1000 gram mass does the job of the hook in the vertical case. A spring scale only measures the tension in the spring. The spring applies a force equal to the weight of the 1000 gram mass to hold it steady. This is the only mass that is measured. The second 1000 gram mass holds the spring steady. Since the second 1000 gram mass is not attached to the spring, it is not measured.

Why the spring scale reads 1000 grams: Imagine the scale hanging from a hook like normal with a 1000 gram mass hanging from it. You would expect this scale to read 1000 grams. But, that 1000 gram mass' weight is exerting a force on the scale in the downward direction. Why doesn't the scale acclerate downward according to F=ma? Because the hook must be exerting a force equal to the weight of the mass in the upward direction. - continued -

JSM is an absolutely brilliant teacher - I love his videos. Not sure why he included the two weights attached to each end of the scale in this video though - that's usually a demonstration of Newtons 3rd Law: Action and Reaction are equal and opposite.

I am mesmerized by Dr. Sumner and his eccentricities. I can only hope that my love for the sciences will flourish as long as his did. I always hated filling in worksheets. Ever since grade school, I thought that science was much more exciting when we did physical experiments. That's why I'm majoring in physics. And it's also why I'm currently involved in several undergraduate research projects right now. Don't feel sorry for me. My life is enriched by science!

But I've watched every one of Dr. Sumner's videos, and I love the guy. My comment came from his seeming decline in his faculties over the years he did this show.
