The stick bombs are easy to figure out. I'd recommend using tongue-depressor sticks as they're big and easy to work with. Also, you should wear safety goggles, especially if you're using craft/popsicle sticks as they can jump really high. Basically, the sticks are woven together in an over/under basket-weave pattern and once you get the hang of it, they're really easy to make.

I took soundtracks from previous gadget videos and a lot of electronic distortion to give it a spacey feel. I'm surprised it turned out as nice as it did. A lot of amateur video makers just use a popular song (without permission) for their soundtracks, but that raises serious copyright issues which I care to avoid.

Definitely. The New York Mills video was shot under low light and I had to seriously compress the video which made the quality worse. Now that I have my own studio and better equipment, the quality of the video should improve.

I think that what attracts people to this is the same thing that causes them to watch building implosions--I also think of my kinetic gadgets as 'mechanical fireworks' or something along those lines...

I'm surprised at how sensitive the CCDs are in the Casio--I had 5 track lights plus two 1000 watt halogen lights and that was enough to get these images. However, if one gets into very high speed cameras, especially back in the days of film cameras (when Harold Edgerton made his films of bullets shattering light bulbs, etc.), those took a huge amount of light, either powerful strobe lights or arc lamps...

1000fps in full resolution would be a great thing to have. The Casio EX-F1 will go up to 1200fps, but only in a small window (about 90 x 300 pixels). One drawback with high-speed cameras, especially the ones that go up to 5000fps, is that they need a lot of light. Even the Casio at 1200fps needs more light than I have...

o.0 that much just to rent! ouch! For a video I made I got to use my school's HD cameras and it looked like (didn't try) that it could go to a few hundred frames per second (I think it went to a thousand but I don't know if that would work...) and those were about 3000 I believe. Too bad I can't buy one :P

I'm still learning my way around an audio-editing program, so it's good to get feedback like this. I'll try to keep the sound levels more balanced in the future. The camera was actually around $1000--a Casio EX-F1, the only semi-professional camera currently on the market that shoots high-speed. BTW, I priced high-speed cameras a couple of years ago, and just renting a high-speed camera cost about $300 per day...

Oh, wait, what I meant is to not preserve the pitch. But if that was the effect you wanted maybe change the audio levels next time since (for me anyways) it really blared when it reached this part and I had to lower the volume. ;) Must be a pretty sweet camera to record at those speeds! How much was it, probably about $2500-$3000 right?

Glad ya liked the structure, clay! My high-speed camera doesn't record audio at 300fps, so I took the audio from the real-time video and stretched it, pitch-preserving, to match the length of the slo-mo part. Extreme changes in tempo (x10 in this case) always seem to add audio artifacts like the flanger effect which is what I wanted for this segment. I enhanced this with a little reverb to give it a spacey, surreal mood to the audio...

In the video editing program, when changing the video length (for slow motion) make it so that it preserves the pitch. This way instead of the flanger effect you will simply get a deeper tone :) VERY impressive structure and I can't wait for the next one ^_^

This film leader is pretty good, but it just does not have the style and character of those old film leaders of the '70s and earlier. For example, the words "sound track start" and "picture start" were printed on the film either lengthwise or on one frame, and it zoomed by quickly, and looked really cool. In this leader, those same words are just printed on frames. The whole leader just has a " cold and sterile" appearance rather than the appearance of an old leader.

Yo! I'm 25, and I think I was among the last groups of kids to be shown films in class. I remember seeing them all the time in 3rd through 5th grade. But my sister, who's seven years younger, says she's never seen a projector in a classroom. It could be different at other schools in other parts of the country of course, but I still have a feeling that there aren't too many people younger than, say, 22 who would have seen these old countdowns in class.

Ahh, yes, the good ol' days of film projectors--I had a bunch of 8mm equipment when I was a kid. Projector bulbs would have a lifespan of 16 hours before they burned out. On occasion, the film would jam in the projector, and the frame would melt. What was really treacherous were the films I got from the public library--really bad splices (i.e. masking tape), burned frames, torn sprocket holes. Kids nowadays don't know what they're missing...

I feel sorry for kids today, scince they probaly don't get to enjoy the look of an old film leader (and clattering projectors, damaged/spliced film, warbaly sound tracks), and instead have to look at a crummy DVD menu and boring pristine video and audio with no flaws thrown in to make an otherise boring film fun.

Not yet. I wear glasses, so when the occasional stick bomb detonates unexpectedly, I have eye protection. It's not so bad with tongue depressors, but craft sticks can pack a surprising wallop.

Glad you liked it, HappyKamper! If you know how to make a basic 6-stick square bomb, you're halfway to making big stick bombs. They're just a series of square bombs with the redundant sticks removed so the whole chain explodes. I can't really show how to make them w/o being in person, but you should be able to figure it out. BTW, if you make bombs with popsicle/craft sticks, you should wear safety goggles in case a bomb blows up in your face...
