On further review, I'm not exactly sure what warranted a 17.000 on Italy's five ropes routine. I think Italy getting in second in 2004 was appropriate, but I'm thinking that the judges really had an anti-Italy bias in 2008.

Unfortunately, their five ropes routine (17.000). Even with a sloppy 3 hoops 2 clubs routine from Belarus (17.275), Italy wasn't able to make up enough ground. Italy and Spain (did not qualify for finals) had a disappointing Olympics. They both did very well in the European champs.

you're right I think Italy was cheated. I mean the Russians had a very memorable opening but everything after that I don't really remember what they did at all. But for the Italians...very memorable routines. & it was clean so to me that equals first place, not second. and I loved the Greek costumes for their ribbons routine. I've never seen their hoop/ball routine anyone have it?

I'm not a judge but in my opinion italy was robbed... they had such original routines, their 3hoops 2balls exercise in qualification was the only one that could beat the russians. do you have the others countries routines please??

Am not an expert by ANY means! But yep, Italy were very unlucky. Though as the wheels turn so slowly (and often not at all) in RG, perhaps they were lucky to finish so high... Mind you, I LOVED Bulgaria's routines here, the last great Bulgarian group.

Ps : ufcCanadianhockey87 about Italy there was a mistake but I don't know where you got all those " minor deductions" that underrated Italy so much and didn't let it win a deserved gold. Out of that mistake everything was perfect executed and at the best level possible, not mentioning the routine was simply from another planet if compared to that one of Russia. Italy got robbed in Athens 2004, even worse in Beijing 2008 where the eastern countries didn't even allow Italy to get in the podium as best team . Russia stole another one gold medal and they robbed Italy of a gold medal in Beijing too. Hopefully this senseless sport made of cheats, corrupted judges, bribing cheating countries like Russia and some eastern countries will be cancelled by IOL for London 2012 . that's not sport, that's dirty cheating and shamefull arrogance & ignorance.

I personally think Italy should have gotten gold for overall greatness and awesomeness. Even with the lil mistake. But that would also be unfair to russia, who did everything perfectly. Its hard to say. But Italys routine was truly amazing...like WOW. They kinda got robbed in Athens I cant wait to see this years one, when it gets posted.

they have to catch the ball with one hand, because as they said. The difficulty won't be so high when they catch the ball with both hands. In rhythmic gymnastics they have different difficulties for each move!!!

Although RG was a huge success in Athens and the stadium was sold out every session, NBC chose only to devote 30 minutes to the individual sport and focus only on the top three gymnasts. *Sigh* Here is the coverage, however. I suggest you also check out the RAISport coverage I'll be uploading.

Yes, Peycheva and Cid have great technical ability. Kabaeva's routines were quite unstable although she had no major mistakes. Kabaeva really impressed me when she was younger but in Athens well she was very lucky that she did not drop in the all around. But if you point this out some people they will call you a Russian hater. So sadly nothing gets changed. Viner and Deriugina have their way.

I totally agree. I'll be uploading the RAI Sport coverage of this soon, which is two hours long. The artistic and technical scores really made no sense here to me, even though I'm not an expert. It just seemed like they knew who they wanted to place where and the scores went accordingly. Peycheva and Cid have much better technical use of the apparatus, I don't see how Kabaeva beat them there.

Thanks so much. Athens 2004 is the first time I saw rg. Sadly the US does not air any rg competitions. Since then they have only given the 2006 Aeon Cup on tv. NBC doesn't really care I mean they have an artistic commentator on the rhythmic broadcast. No offense to Elfi. Kabaeva should have been in third at the most after the hoop but rhythmic is unfair. What's new? Come on, a 9 for Kabaeva and an 8.9 for Bessonova in artistic. You've got to be kidding me.

It wasn't Tweddle. GBR did not make team finals. The music was from Ukrainian Alina Kozich, she also used a version of Patterson's music. Tweddle did not use the same music as Patterson. She used the Cha Cha. Only the opening tone was the same as Patterson.

yes, every country has a few girls that are naturally thinner(or bigger) than most gymnast. but in most top countries they train and live together so maybe those girls' coaches work them too hard, also they might feel more pressure to stay thin just b/c they are together. here every girl trains @ home with her own coach, and trains in their own style, we dont see the other top girls all the time so there is less pressure. right about now they are pressured w/ the traing camps @ the karolyi camp.

It's pretty damn awkward yes but i have to admit that she is good! I like Tasha's vault! The way she sticks the landing is pretty great! Another thing I like about the Americans is that they look 'healthy', when you compare them to some of the romanians and chinese girls for example, you can just see that the Americans are strong..their bodies arent as tiny and fragile like the bodies from some other gymnasts..You know what i mean?

I think you meant "Popa" instead of "Gogean". The quad turn was only valued as a D, same as a triple turn, so she would have gotten 0.2 for that combination of two skills. So, I count up 1.4 in bonus, like you said. Sometimes gymnasts who were specialists on an event would exceed a 10.00 SV just in case. This would make sense for Gomez since a lot of her bonus relies on pirouettes and turning jumps. This way, she could to under-rotate a jump or pirouette and not start from a 9.8

I liked Elena's routine. It had some really appropriate choreography compared to some other routines from this quad. The only thing that I think people could dislike about it is that it really represents this quad's focus on dance connections more than tumbling.

I do not require my gymnasts to wear grips. When they are young and their hands are little, it is harder to get a good grip on the bar and learn skills. I have coached some kids at higher levels that never wear them until they get to a certain age/size. Either way, they are not necessary for all gymnasts.

I know there are a lot of tiny gymnasts, but Patricia Moreno looks just plain ill. Maybe it's not fair to blame her fragile appearance for her poor vault performance, but I just can't help it. Your body needs calories to perform gymnastics safely. Period. If I were Jesus Carballo, I would be more worried about my team being healthy than my team being "inexperienced."

No, she didn't deserve that high of a score. In other countries, they often don't have the money to use grips. US gymnasts probably go through a pair of grips every few months, and they're expensive. Eastern European gymnasts, etc. probably just get used to it at an early age and just get huge callouses.

you know, sometimes i just want to strangle tim and elfi... but especially tim. I did gymnastics for 12 years and was pretty good, especially on beam but I hated full turns. Give me arials, back tucks, punch fronts... but turns absolutely killed me. I want to see tim get up there on a 4 in piece of wood do a full turn with his leg at horizontal and then tell me it's not hard. No it's not as physically difficult... but it's just as mentally.

Every single one of their athletes did their very own one-touch warm-up before they started beam. I guess they figured since it was no longer allowed they would do it anyway. Can I just add that as an ex gymnast and now a prof dancer I think Shawn is beautiful in her movement. Carly was as well, and yes they are not as dancy as taller gymnasts, Khorkina et gang, BUT they work with what they have. All I want to say to Shawn is lift your eyes! Batyrchina- only 16 in Atlanta and had only started competing as senior less then 2 years before Atlanta. Had gone from 9th AA at 94 Worlds to 3rd AA at 95 Worlds, so not surprising at that rate of improvement she could become threat to anyone by 96 including possibly Serbianskaya and Petrova even Zatipova was 3rd and 2nd AA at the 93 and 94 Worlds right behind Petrova, so she had been very close to Petrova before, although was the most surprising of the 4 to beat her here.

Actually Vitirchenko had also been around since 93 and was nearly Petrova's age. Still easy to see how these 3 were able to beat Petrova despite her World AA titles: Serbianskaya- at 94 Worlds lost AA gold only due to mistake then swept Petrova in EFs, winning all 4 golds. at 95 Worlds tied Petrova for World AA title. Vitirchenko- late bloomer who would dominate the 1-2 years after 96, and be a conteder as late as 2000. Many thought she should have even won the gold here in 96.

Well one factor is Batyrchina and Vitirchenko were younger gymnasts who had not been around nearly as long as Petrova. So just because they hadnt beaten her in a major AA before doesnt mean it was that surprising they did here. Serbianskaya had always been a big threat to Petrova in the years before Atlanta. So really only the 4th place Russian was that surprising to beat her. The others were all easily believable to how it could happen despite her World AA titles in previous years.

How is Deriugina a good judge? Irina Deriugina was suspended in 2000 for unfair judging and right now she is suspended again. But I think that as a coach she and her mother Albina are very good. The style of the Ukrainians is very beautiful.

Yea. I don't understand how she went from being World Champ the years right before the Olympics and then performed well only to finished out of the medals. I mean...it's not like the rules suddenly changed right before the Olympics. Too bad this awesome sport is judged so unfairly. I just feel bad for the athletes.

I can see that Serebrianskaya had the difficulty, but she was overscored IMO. Meanwhile Maria's routine was unique, dramatic, and super fast. Her score was a bit lower than she usually gets I must say.

I wasn't speaking of Ekaterina's mom I was speaking of Deriugina whom the FIG still allows to judge despite being caught in the famous judging scandal against Elena. Their is actual proof that Elena has been underscored. As for Ekaterina, it's sad that she had to retire but at least she got gold in Atlanta. What did Petrova get? She was penalized for a zipper in Barcelona. Meanwhile Timoshenko dropped her ball and had no difficulty and still won. What is your opinion of Deriugina and Viner?

If I heard correctly Ekaterina's career ended because the judging system changed and she wasn't as good under it. Also I hear she dropped out of the 1997 Worlds percisely because her mother wouldn't be judge there and she wouldn't have an advantage. I am against Elena and Ekaterina's mother's being judges. I think it's not fair. That being said you can't deny that Elena has been unfairly treated in some major competitions. Come on her own Ukrainian federation plotted against her in 2000.

Give me a freaking break on saying Serbrianskaya not deserving to win since her mom was a judge. Vitirchenko won a bunch of events later with her mommy as a judge too. Do you hold that against her. In later years the Ukranian federation basically dumped Serbrianskaya in favor of Vitirchenko causing her to retire in 98.

So there is no controversy when your coach is also a judge and you win? And there is no controversy when Elena gets higher execution scores than composition when she's usually scored the other way around? And how can you explain that Elena almost lost the bronze to Zaripova? Atlanta isn't the first time and it wasn't the last time Elena was under scored or unfairly judged.

Serbrianskaya's mistake was not big. She was clearly the best up until then. People who dont like her win are simply looking to invent controversy when there is none. I tk Vitirchenko should have moved up to silver when Batyrchina messed up her last event so bad though.

She placed behind two gymnast whom had major errors. We all know Elena has had to suffer through judging scandals. Doesn't that make you suspicious? She almost didn't get the bronze. Zaripova, whom already made an error previously, messed up her ribbon and missed out by very little. How do you explain this?

About Maria, I guess the Bulgarians don't have a Viner or Deriugina and Elena didn't have the support of the Ukrainian Federation. The zipper penalty for Maria and the low scores of Elena were ridiculous.

I wish that Petrova had done better in the rankings. Perhaps her difficulty was lower...but...her interpretation of the music and her choice of music was really engaging for me.

Each individual judge could deduct in .05 increments. No individual throws a 9.987, 9.975 or 9.962, the final score is a result of an average of the judges scores. The chances of all 4 counting scores being a 10 on a Yurchenko-fullin 1992 were slim to none.

The judges didn't seem to want to give out ten's for perfectly executed Yurchenko full's, even if the COP said they should have. It seemed like the judges maxed out Yurchenko fulls at around a 9.95 to 9.9625 or so. The only score I'm aware of that was higher was Lyssenko's stuck double-twisting Yurchenko which got a 9.975. She had poor form in the air so that why I think she didn't get a 10. I think the judges were just trying to reward the harder vaults with artificiallly low scores.

No gymnast got a ten on vault at these games. Lyssenko came the closest with a 9.975 on a stuck double twisting Yurchenko. It seemed like the judges informally knew the full twist didn't really deserve at 10.00 start value so the highest score they gave out for them was 9.5 I think.
