no, you have to had made a director's account about 2 years ago. Back then if you had a director's account you were able upload videos longer than 10 minutes. Youtube changed it to try and stop people from uploading full copyrighted movies after google bought youtube but those who made their director's accounts when they could make videos longer than 10 minutes were able to keep that ability. there's no way to get one now I'm afraid.

I'm not negating the wonderful effect this symphony has, I'm just saying that treating this symphony like background music to your life is a disservice both to the music and to yourself. There is SO MUCH in these symphonies that you really must listen intently. You are only passively listening and in the process missing a lot of the genius of Beethoven which is the most thrilling part about listening to music.

I don't think classical music is racist on purpose (not anymore anyway) but given the comments refuting the person who first stated that it was racist I can see why he would think that. Herbert Von Karajan, who led the Berlin Philharmonic, is considered to have been one of the greatest conducters, and watching him perform it's easy to understand why. The Eroica, along with the fifth and nineth, are my favorite Beethoven symphonies. Incredible power and emotion in these masterpieces.

George Grove, Beethoven and his Nine Symphonies, p.140: "it is impossible not to believe that the work ... is based on his relations to the Countess [Teresa von Brunswick] and is more or less a picture of their personality and connection". No, whatever you read in wikipedia was wrong. It is the fifth symphony and the moonlight sonata that Beethoven used as vehicles of his pain of going deaf in. Read Groves dictionary.

Google Heiligenstadt Testament and get the whole story. It was written in 1802 "in despair over his growing deafness". I don't think it ever did. Think of all the great orchestras in the US, all the great soloists, including African-Americans like Kathleen Battle, Andre Watts, Wynton Marsalis. Thanks to modern recordings, Youtube, classical internet radio, etc. etc. - even movies like Amadeus - there are probably more people listening and playing than ever before. And then there are the Asians, Zubin Mehta (Indian), Kiri te Kanawa (Maori) ... it's truly the music of the world.

Mohaa279: chances are, yes. i saw a performance in Putney, VT a few years back of a female conductor, elderly lady...like 70+, conduct St. Matthew's Passion by Bach in it's entirety w/out the score (she sat in her personal chair used at all of her events). Her "story" was that she loved Bach so much that she felt she would be united with him upon her death. And this version was performed w/ baroque soloist accompanied by a modern orchestra. it was wonderful.

The conductor does need to cue people, especially after like twenty measures of rest. It's not a matter of not knowing when to come in, but of making it easier to come in. But the conductor is not merely there as a leader in tempo or entrance. Piano pieces have several interpretations, each determined by the pianist. The conductor is "playing" the symphony, and the orchestra is his instrument. It is a beautiful thing, one person expressing his feelings of a piece through an entire orchestra.

While I'm not exactly a fan of rap per se, I wouldn't say that just because contemporary music isn't as good as Beethoven that music has degenerated. No one is as good as Beethoven and no one ever will be, so it's kind of an unfair comparison. There is still great music out there; composers like John Williams, Tan Dun, Clint Mansell, and Hans Zimmer are still making some pretty great orchestral stuff.

I would venture to say that all music is emotional to one degree or another. Some music is more institutionalized and built upon established structures (which Beethoven used and even added his own signature to), and music that is more free-flowing and meant to present a musicians' interpretation, rather than the composer's strict intent. Not correctly right I say. Beethoven and many others paved the way for many other Western musicians/composers. I personally think it is a question of culture. The African people for instance, are more rythmic orientated then emotionally. I know he had the idea of setting Schiller's Ode early, and even wrote one and scrapped it, but I don't think he actually started writing musical ideas down until much later, and certainly not for the first 3 movements. His "dry run" for the 9th was the Choral Fantasy, which was written just after the 5th (and is frankly a bit of a mess). It has one theme similar to the Ode, but he hadn't put the tune and the words together yet. The tune was still undeveloped and lacked the grandeur.

I would say that Beethoven's first definitely romantic/middle period piece was the Pathetique (1797), and that the first revolutionary symphony was #1 (1800), with his first Scherzo (albeit still labelled Menuetto) and starting on a secondary dominant discord, unheard of. I don't think there was any epiphany, rather an inevitable evolution. Anyway, Mozart's last 3 symphonies (plus a few others, like the Haffner) are better than Beethoven's first 2

This is a fine symphony, but IMHO it falls in the category of being as good as any by Mozart or Haydn. When Beethoven composed this 3rd, he entered a realm of greatness that had not before been ventured. It was as though he had suddenly received an epiphany (not long after he had composed this symphony) that changed his outlook on music and genius forever.
