Good question Bus! What happens with great European conductors is that they tend to conduct on the UP-BEAT. That is, the actual beat is placed when his hands go UP. If you look carefully, look at the string players' bows. They are right on the beat. Evildictatovarn is partly right. However, major orchestras know the repertoire well enough to were they don't have to rehearse much, it is just adding minor details to make it different. The main reason for the "lag" is due to the conducting style.

It depends on the conductor and the orchestra. Sometimes its too expensive to pay the players to rehearse a lot so the conductor stays ahead of them and shows them thru his movements what he wants them to do. The symphony mainly depends on the concert master (the first violin) to lead them. They also have some that rehearse a lot and they go on the the conductors down beat because they know what he wants next already.

Thank you dpxstsmfp. To make sure I understand how they play relative to the conductor's ... Do you move your violin's bow or hit the piano key in synch with the conductor's hand movement? Or do you purposedly move half a beat behind him because you need to know his instruction? I have never been to a concert this close-up. I like imagining myself as a conductor, and perfect synch between sight and sound on my monitor will make it more enjoyable. Again, thanks for the advice.

Its true that some videos lag, but not this one (you can tell because all the instruments are on cue). What your seeing is the fact that orchestra conductors conduct half a beat early.

This is amazing. The sound is so smooth and warm that I can't believe that it's coming from a flute. I play flute recreationally and I cannot even comprehend how such a perfect sound can come out of a flute. That flute is a part of his body... he controls it like one. Truly amazing.

He's from french school, nothing to do with Nicolet/Graaf/Zoeller. They think in getting a good/deep sound. French school likes to play as a bird, bad focusing of sound to get wind sound, less brilliant, less deep. For me it's as if they were wanting to sound artificial. And they don't get in tune all the time.

I give it a 7.4 And I'm givin her 8.2 for shear spite because I think she did a real good job. I'm not sure I like his playing of this concerto. I mean, I'm learning it for my diploma at the moment, and if I had played it like that to my teacher, he would've ripped it apart! And he does some weird stuff with the cadenza, although I suppose that is up to personal choice. Not saying he's not a good violinist, before you all jump on me, I'm just saying for me this performance didn't work.

Isn't it difficult to conduct when you're holding a violin? I would think so. Anyway, Isaac Stern does an exceptionally good job at multitasking as the conductor and leading the orchestra even when he's not conducting.

the book is great i devoured it as soon as it hit the shelves- i love the masterclass Barenboim gives to Lang Lang on Beethovens Appassionata Sonata- if u havent seen it its a must see- also Moriz Rozenthal has audio recordings and he studied uner Liszt and u can find audio of them on youtube- perhaps the closest we will ever get to what Chopin may have sounded like- so lively and just no regret just 100 mph -

There is no "Definitive Book On Playing Chopin" because of Chopin's emotionally driven, rubato laden, improvisational style. I absolutely adore Lang Lang, but in my opinion, his trademark bombastic, in your face style that's become loved (and criticized) by many just dosen't seem to fit Chopin as well as countrymen Yundi Li does.

he's good bt helene grimaud is the best lang lang acts too much, he ain't real. i escorted him 2 weeks when i was very lucky to do a work experience in a very famous opera in germany. he is hyperactive as well lol :) as i sed, he is good, definitely one of the best in the world, but there are better ones. personaly, i think helene grimaud is the best. x

Easliy the best interpretation of the Arutunian I have ever heard. Sergei is definetly one the greatest modern classical players of our day. His embrochure is rock solid, his tone is outstanding, and he pretty much executed this piece flawlessly. And the orchestra is incredible as well.

Actually, if you go to his website and look under biography, it tells you that he sustained a spinal injury, and from various interviews and the like he has said it's from a car accident. Please know your facts before telling people off. Sure some of his playing down is his preference, but he was injured in an accident.

that's just his dental structure. Every player is different, some play up, some down, some horizontal. Down is what works for his chops, and regardless he's better than anyone that will post on here. Here's some info I have in my sheet music for the oboe version of KV 314 (Oboe Concerto in C major): This was originally written for oboe (listed as the "lost" Ferlendis Concerto). That concerto was found in 1920 and shown to be nearly identical to the Flute Concerto in D Major. That would be a "lute" not a mandolin... Mandolins have four courses with two equally tuned strings in each course and they are tuned as a violin, a lute has 6-15 courses and isn't quiet as bright, also I do believe that the individual strings in a course usually tuned an octave appart.

i agree! i've studied for 5 years and everytime someone asks what i play and i answer "recorder" they say "but that's really easy, i used to play it at school" i get really angry haha. i try to explain them, but there are a lot of people that just can't see it as a difficult instrument that can play a beautiful sound.. It is hard to believe he would perform on a plastic recorder when everyone else is playing on reproductions of original instruments. But it does look that way to me. And I have to say from my experience the plastic sopraninos really tend to play very well. I have a wooden Von Huene Renaissance sopranino which has a beautiful sound - but for this piece with the need for the complete range of the instrument and for a sound which projects Aulos and Yamaha sopraninos are really outstanding.

Thank you (; I disagree about the conducting. a) I saw him conduct, and he does not use excessive bodylanguage at all. b) these guys are playing together for decades and I am sure they are well enough in tune that they do not need 'conducting' c) simple headnods are usually what we use in a group to communicate, not swaying and dancing (;
