No harsh feelings, but I have to disagree. First off, Zimmerman's Moderato section seems ordinary compared to Horowitz's. He also demonstrates better control over the Presto. As I am learning this song, I find control is omnipotent in this song; either the pianist controls the song to produce something like Horowitz's, or the song controls the pianist which then results in a duller tone. Zimmerman playing is better than many famous pianists, but Horowitz's version is still the most flawless one.

MY POOR Maestro!! He was disgusted with this. He was up for days, and was with prostitutes. He wanted to destroy himself. MY POOR POOR MAESTRO!!! He is much better now.!!!

This is a good version, but as such, it is clouded with a fault in acoustics that traces its origins to the age of the video, and...if one notices the wood squeaking at 4:37, at which he himself could not hide his annoyance (glanced at the public...)Moreover, at 8:47, Horowitz seems to embark on a mixture of Charleston and Blues! Zimmerman's is still much better than this.

Maestro was borrowed from Italian and is originally derived from latin 'magister'which means 'master.' We use it as a title of respect for people who have mastered a certain art whether it be music, poetry, etc.

Always cracks me up how people get in arguments over these things. It was in B, no E....geesh. I can't find a Youtube video where people don't get all worked up. Look at it this way....at least we have Chopin available to listen to in our lives. It's that anonymity?of the Internet that people hide behind so they can argue to make them selves feel better.

oh i see.but does'nt maestro mean conductor in italian?
By: musicformillions. on 20 Nov 08, 05:26:59
v1ryus - Let me give you some hope. The minimalists were reacting to the randomness of "chance" music. To being some order back they played their minimalist snippets over and over and over etc. Some composers are taking the repetition of minimalism and expanding it where it's not mind numbing. I would point you to Gorecki; esp. his 3rd Symphony to demonstrate this point Music in moving away from the limitations of minimalism to almost a neo-neo-classicism. Adams is another composer of note

My point exactly. I don't think I worded it exactly as you had put it or correctly to facilitate my idea. What I meant was, music tends to be rather bland as of late. Take for example movie composers - they all seem to have very much the same formula. One can argue because for the movies the proper melody must be obtained. As far as live concierto composers go - today seems to be full of minimalists. That is my main concern.

v1ryus-When we're given a single defined version of a piece, that destroys the uniqueness of music. Yes and No There is a TRADITION that informs one on how to properly interpret Chopin. This establishes proper BOUNDARIES; but once this is internalized by an artist - his personal instincts can allow him a great range of freedom within those established boundaries Zimerman-Horowitz-Perahia-Rubinstein are all very different but give great readings of the Ballades in the Chopin tradition

No you are absolutely correct, he did not conduct. Maestro however is a honorable title given to those who are greatly distinguished in their respective fields of music. (i.e. Maestro Andres Segovia for classical guitar)He *Horowitz* taught Chicago symphony pianist Ivan Davis. Some point in Horowitz' retirement, also taught many others. Those dates I forget but you could probably find them somewhere online.
By: MillyProductions. on 20 Nov 08, 03:01:24
maestro horowitz? did he conduct also? (i'm not making a mockery i just never heard that)
By: v1ryus. on 19 Nov 08, 22:01:20
I appreciate your interpretation of Maestro Horowitz' version of this ballade. Yes you're right - he doesn't play it as softly as other pianists, however the ability to invoke different interpretations, such as yours, is something that needs to be addressed more often in modern classical music. When we're given a single defined version of a piece, that destroys the uniqueness of music.

LA migliore esecuzione per me rimane quella di Fou TS'og. The best of executions is the Fou TS'ong execution.

It would be nice if someone could do some proper noise reduction on this. Not just some rookie spectral subtraction, but the full works. Might have to look into it this Christmas. This performance sends shivers down my spine.
