I find it strange that people argue whether global warming is real or not, the empirical evidence supporting it is overwhelming. Even if you dismiss science, doesn't it show in your life at all? I've seen climate change critics use graphs ignoring this point with the data in front of them, but since they lack the grasp of the core math (calculus) they have no idea what the data really says. Not completely sold on global warming. The Earth has gone through several long periods of climate change, both getting warmer and colder. This has been happening for millions of years. To say that rising CO2 levels are causing the change in climate can't be proved. If you look at only a small chunk of time (1970-present) of course they are both rising, but if you look at a span of 1,000,000 years.....

It IS the same as Pascal's Wager and it STILL does NOT work. It still assumes there is merely a 2x2 decision matrix when in fact the issue is far more complex. It still ignores probability of the hypothesis being true by remaining ignorant of the facts surrounding the issue. And it is still is a non-argument based not on rationality but on fear of consequences and safe-bet semantics. Man-made global warming may or may not exist, but this is NOT the way to approach the issue.

The problem is actually that it assumes one can believe something out of fear for negative consequence. In the case of The God Hypothesis, it fails because belief is the important than and an omniscient being would see through it. In the case of Global Warming, the actions taken are the important thing. Even though it works, unlike Pascal's Wager, it works on the same concept as the Wager.

It is true that the whole ecofriendly movement is just another anti-big business and anti-establishment movement. They're only out to "stick it to the man". However, if the end result is solely to move towards alternative fuel sources and reduce the amount of oil we need to import, the movement is fine. The problem is that in doing so and driving up the cost of oil on a global scale, it results in the deaths of thousands of people in countries that can't afford it for their agricultural needs.
