Great clip! I remember watching this game on TV too. It was really the first time I had seen a complete NHL game with Gretzky playing. Yes, there are a couple of questionable assists, but I remember Guy Lafleur getting credit with a few phantom assists during the 1970s when he was gunning for scoring titles.

Goal 1 not on the ice. Goal 3 toronto players touching the puck. Goal 5 own goal
By: SeloTheHalo. on 10 Nov 08, 00:52:03
i counted 2 phantom assists
By: gurra1982. on 09 Nov 08, 04:21:53
unbelievable 3 pointz Gretzky shoudent have i one game! I wonder how many times that happened in his career.
By: cathbad2468. on 03 Nov 08, 05:14:08
The NHL was a glorified beer league back then. The goalies routinely let in what we would today consider soft goals. Forwards don't even understand how to play defense, they pass to each others skates and they turn the puck over. They just sucked back then.
By: sladesteel. on 28 Oct 08, 00:31:06
there was definitely a phantom assist in there- but if his linemates score on his sublime setups this could have easily been a 10 point night for gretz. he was absolutely SICK- dont care what any haters have to say. just listen to the crowd everytime he got the puck. behind the back passes, between the legs trickery...not many players pulled this stuff off in the 80s let alone today. (crosby comes to mind)

I remember this game. My Dad was in the basement working, and I was watching upstairs. I kept coming downstairs saying, "Dad, they scored again". Some things never change in Leaf world. Thanks for posting this.
By: phille22. on 18 Oct 08, 21:01:05
who cares if you score alot of 2nd assists? Macdonald is on fire
By: pmccall1. on 08 Oct 08, 00:36:47
At 820 retzky is amazing..stick to skate and set up...at 18 years old he was the best..at 40 he was still the best.
By: ManVsReality08. on 26 Sep 08, 14:02:15
lol why is the goalie so skinny? easy to score with him like that.
By: jpoux27. on 22 Sep 08, 00:36:18
gretzky did'nt even touch the puck on the goal at 3:52. it was a giveaway pas from behind the net. Looks like he was given assits to catch up with Marcel Dionne like Gordie Howe To Maurice Richard. This is bullshit

By: tacular3. on 25 Jul 08, 02:57:11
Bingo! Totally agree.
By: tacular3. on 25 Jul 08, 02:56:51
Agreed! Gretzky was so far and beyond from ANY other player. If there was a player that dominant today he would get 200 Pts easy
By: EDEEB7. on 30 Jun 08, 03:58:36
Great footage!! Thank you!
By: 11DNA11. on 30 May 08, 17:29:02
Gretzky saw the ice like no other. Gem of a playmaker. Lemieux was pure talent combined in a huge frame.
By: vesivialvy. on 06 May 08, 04:03:34
FREULING is right about the NHL in the 90's but we should never forget that Brett Hull scored i think +-500 goals goals in the 90's with a season of 87 goals in early 90's...and Mario lemieux is 2 pts per games avrg in the 90's....only to say that great players can score in any games situations and in any NHL style of play and rules...
By: freudling. on 04 May 08, 19:06:04
Gretzky got 130 points in 93/94. He also got 97 points in 96/97. The 90s was the dirtiest, roughest, most congested, clutch and grab hockey. The 2 line pass rule was in effect... If Alex was playing back then, he would have had to contend with all the roughness of Scott Stevens, Domi, Probert, two line passing, holding, grabbing, etc. True, hockey today is faster, but if you watch games from the late 90s the pace is close, just a lot tougher to move around back then.
By: rcapello99. on 25 Apr 08, 20:54:43
man your dumb gretzky the greatest 25 g wtf you moron keep this in mind gretzky's first hockey stick in the nhl 14 lbs titan whits give him a one pice synergy crap he would dominate as usal man u must be just a fan agian put him in his prime now with no clutch and grabbing lol 300pts seasons!!!!!!!!!
By: Vice81. on 22 Apr 08, 15:29:46
It's different eras people, you do no how to contextualize these things don't you?
By: bige2207. on 21 Apr 08, 05:37:01
am i one of the only people that think alexander the great's 60+ goal season this year beats gretzky's? dont get me wrong im a huge gretzky fan and have always looked up to him as a hockey player, but shit if you see some of the goals he scored the players dont even look like they are trying. the new nhl is so much harder to play in then this pond hockey gretzky was playing
By: elhoff. on 14 Apr 08, 00:46:57
negative... gretzky would still be sick today. if some of his shots would have been stopped by today's goalies, he just would have found a different way to score. he could see the game like no one else, that doesn't change with time.
By: ocrammas4. on 06 Apr 08, 01:22:13
What a treat to watch! And did you hear the bell they used to mark the end of the game? Sounded like a fire alarm LOL
