The thing is, the MiG is the perfect architecture for dogfights, nearly as agile as the Eurofighter. With this 3d-Vectoring it is a hard enemy in WVR-fights, but MiG has always had uöltracrapradartechnique, so I dont know if the Russians did something on this... I'ld say the Eurofighter is the best multiroleinterceptor at the time. If the EU really is going to give it 3d-Vec within Tranche 3 its going to be the super-killer, there is no way to make a plane more agile...

ahh no sir! you have no idea what your talking about. your russian air craft are OLD US designes. we let them have have it because we new they sucked. The raptor is untouchable. It has way way WAY more power and its stealth, let alone it has vectored thrust. Right now the raptor kill ratio agaisnt russian built aircraft (from red flag) is 24 to 1. thats sad, and your going to tell people that mig 29s can out do a raptor? ohh and the german aircraft are UK and US airplanes. think before u speak.

Men, what a stupid discussion. The first flight of the 29 was in 1977. The F22 is from the 90's. That are two absolut different planes. BTW the Air Force bought in 1997 21 Migs for tests ! And that OVT version is a prototype. They did this with the Su 27 years ago...

If you were to implement the F-22's electronic capabilites onto the Mig-29 the Mig would become exponentially superior to F-22, it's simply a better design. Americans should stick to engineering hot dogs, not Aircraft. At least have the sense to buy a German or Russian designer for christ sake.

You obviously have not seen the F-22 airshow where it performed aerial acrobatics on par with the SU-35. But maneuverability is of an aircraft only plays a very small role. The F-22 can launch medium range missiles before anyone can detect it. And the AIM-9X is unrivaled in close in dog fighting. It will out-maneuver any aircraft and is completely unparalleled.

why is everyone arguing over the F-22 vs. EF? They are designed completely differently. EF is multi-role, Raptor is air superiority. The reality is that the F-22 would likely dominate the EF (in most cases). The flip side is the Raptor has nowhere near the strike capability of the EF. F-22 vs Su-37/47 is lame too because they are concept planes. For Russia to build a fleet of them realistically, the end result would not have the same capability. radars, weapons, etc add to weight and drag, etc.

Actually this wasn't in a airshow, the pilot was hot dogging for the camera crew. He was known for his wreckless flying and the Air Force did nothing about it. One of the crewmembers father was/is suing the Air Force for not taking action and revoking the flight status of the pilot before this crash.

According to some sources, he made that turn because there was another aircraft on the runway. After asking for permission to make a left turn which was granted from the tower, he made it, but there was a restricted airspace (nuclear storage facility, they say) which he did not want to fly into and thus tied to make the turn quicker. "McGeehan attempted to eject...." it was too late and happened too quick. Hope nothing like that happens again. Too bad for the guys who have died, fuck the plane.

for whoever is wondering about the crash, it was caused by a drastic and sudden loss of lift. when you bank a plane until it is nearly sideways, particularly a large plane with a thin fuselage incapable of generating its own lift, the plane will stall out because there is simply not enough lifting force to keep it in the air.

No there are not ejection seats in B-52. Or at least their were none in those days. Maybe something has changed in the last 14 years. The air force actually equips B-52 with an axe so the air crew can axe their way out if need be. It's a joke. The air crews joke about their escape procedures. Thanks for that, I usually go for NTSB reports, but sometimes it is hard to forgien Crash data. I had a tough time finally getting the report on the p-38 crash ( not really pilot error, but yet Probable cause "obstruction by, or reaching for, object(s) in cockpit, caused PIC to lose awarness of his closeness to the ground, causing the crash") another real tragic crash.

Hi, The No1 engine carb was adjusted incorrectly following an off-site overhaul at a specialist and on-site refit (no-body set up the float chamber needle valve stops). As the r/h roll was arrested, the local negative G on No1 caused the needle valve to fully close cutting the fuel flow. With the a/c so close to Vmc, climbing steeply, steeply banked and assymetric, Kevin Moorhouse was unable to maintain control of it. The results are, as they say, history. The guy didn't stand a chance...

Well, there are two (2) being re-built right now, one in Canada, one in NZ. The restoration team stated for a "all wooden" aircraft, there is an awful lot of metal!! And you need a HECK of a lot of items to build a from scratch Mossie, Jigs,Blue prints, engines, large hanger etc.etc. It is a large and complex task!!! should see both re-builds active in 2009/10

I feel bad this plane crashed. But its so easy to make All you need is craftsmanship(wood0 and need to know how to do engines and the wiring for the control of the plane. It would look brand new again. But I wonder if they ever built this Mosquito back up again?

No need my dear armchair hero. Kevin Moorhouse, the 10,000hr test pilot in command of RR299 when she crashed died on impact along with the Flight Engineer. I hope that satisfies your thirst for blood. I assume that before posting your offensive remarks you read the full AAIB report before deciding it was wrong and Kevin Moorhouse just crashed it because he was a bad pilot? If not, perhaps you should read the report before voicing your uninformed opinions about dead pilots.

The Mosquito did not fall apart in WWII. It was one of the strongest,lightest and fastest combat aircraft of the War!. It regularly took more damage than aluminium aircraft and was not subject to fatigue cracking. It could carry a B-17 sized bomb load at higher speeds over similar distances with a crew of 2 and in bomber versions, unarmed! PR versions could outrun every German (or allied aircraft) except the ME 262.

Yes, it was at bovingdon. they also filmed some of the battle of britain stuff there. A school friend was an air cadet at the time, and they were allowed to go to the airfield and he came back with photos of a couple of Me109's and bombers. I can remember being very small and my dad taking me there, when they had b17's there for an open day and him lifting me up into the bomb hatch. Can't put a date on it though.. (dads gone)

You're comparing apples and oranges folks. The two planes are designed for two completely different roles. The EF-200o is designed as a multi-role fighter for the plans up. The Raptor is an air superiority fighter. Our current multi-role platforms will serve this purpose well for the foreseeable future. That being, F-15, F-16, F-18. Both are fine aircraft in their design parameters. Our pilots don't lack combat experience, by the way. So, who have the Europeans flown against in combat, lately?

747SP ...Special Performance. yes a smaller version of the 747-100. Originally made to try compete with the DC-10 and L-1011 midsize jets of the mid-70s. My son and I attended this airshow. THAT was a treat in itself. God bless the videographer real good cuz the best view is without a video camera! I was depending on the likes of you to post it...LOL!

This is an amazing video, although it does look like something that shouldnt have been done. All airshows i've been too all maneuvers are done at least 300 feet or so IN FRONT of the audience. Although that is a pretty big goof, I cant compare it too the SU27 incedent, this is a fast, flat pass with tons of lift, no chance to crash within the confines of the crowd area, The SU27 incedent was low "stall" speeds over the crowd.

Agreed. However, I wouldn'y be totally thrilled to have a jet fly over me while turning at low altitude, knowing that crashes can and do happen at air shows. The last air show I attended at Miramar in early October 2008 had a few jets fly over the audience. It's kind of cool, but it's not the kind of cool that's worth dying for. And as I previously mentioned, the jets can be 99% as cool flying in front of the audience while posing almost no risk to the audience if a crash were to occur.

While that is kind of cool, the "coolness" of the maneuver doesn't seem like it's worth the risk to the audience. I would much rather have the plane perform in front of me than over me. Some people may remember the Russian Sukhou SU27 air show crash, which entailed the pilot performing maneuvers over/towards the audience, not entirely different from this F-15 video. The SU27 crash resulted in the death of 85 people and the injury of many more.

Actually you're not allowed to do this in Europe or America I think. When you do a display it has to be a certain horizontal distance away from the crown cordon, I think its usually something like 200ft. It's a safety regulation that was brought in after a jet crashed into the crowd at a big airshow one year, can't remember which one. The point is, no flying is allowed directly over the audience.

jajaja its cause if you crash into a fighter plane you just go through it but with a transprt you actually crash, and it takes more than a missile to shoot it down. actually 4 with a couple rounds of MG. and it takes 2 missiles to shoot down fighters wxcept the MiG-31, tornado, and A-10. But Transports cheat, they appear to go real slow then when you hit them or get close they like accelerate airspeed, same with the helicopters

The C-5 should be in the Air Force for a while... I can't imagine how much it would cost to REPLACE one, esp when a new C-17 these days is over $200M! Keep in mind that one of the A380's downfall is that it is not able to load cargo through its nose. Look where the cockpit is placed and compare it to the C-5 and the 747 - both of which can have their noses opened for cargo loading.

im not too sure when but giving that the weight of the c-5 payload for max takeoff is 180,000lbs the a380 fully fueled is around 300,000 lbs alone mtow is around 1,300,790lbs now i dont see the c-5 going anywhere soon they fill a special slot in the airforce but for super heavy things the c-5 cant lift the a380 will the c-5 can land where a380 cant cause of the fragile landing gear

Maybe the MiG29 has higher instantaneous pitch&roll rate than the Phantom but as a whole the MiG29 is not very maneuverable. As a weapon system, the F4 is more superior. Modernized Phantoms have better electronics systems.powerplants than MiG29. The systems which MiG29s are starting to be equipped with are roughly comparable with standard equipment of Western fighters 2 decades ago.Su30 MIGHT be able to barely match the F4 in a prolonged dogfight.

Wow! Some fantastic and well thought out comments. My dad was an IP for 6 years in the 104-he maintained what made it a great weapon was flying it the way it was designed to be flown. It was a very demanding A/C and demanded nothing less than total respect from those who flew it. The F-104 was designed to work in coordinated teams, using supersonic gun passes on slower targets such as period Migs. Basically like the Thatch weave, but doing supersonic loops. The Mig-21 is not notably better than the F-104 in combat maneuvering. The F-104 has superior acceleration and sustained climb, and supersonic maneuvering. It was designed for supersonic slashing attacks, ie boom and zoom. One on one with equally experienced pilots it would be a draw.

No, against the Mig-21 it would be par, for every chronological variant. Everyone generalizes 'This is better this is worse' way too much. The F-104 could out accelerate and out maneuver at supersonic velocities any Mig-21. Whereas the Mig is better subsonic. AA-2 Atolls were just reverse engineered AIM-9Bs and about as reliable. AA-8 / AIM-9M (generous) It's all how you play the strengths of the aircraft.

I love the A-4 Skyhawk but it's not going to last long in a multible MiG engagement. A few Aussie & Kiwi birds were upgraded with air-2-air radars but none of those airframes can match the maneuverability of the MiG-29 OVT!! Many countries? Germany, Israel, Greece and they still fly em because they have better CAP support which hmmm...includes the MiG-29!

Pick any model F-4 Phantom and I will be happy to point out it's weakness in ACM against a MiG-29! The Gsh cannon only needs 2-3 rounds on the target to break up the airframe. Point is..F-4's are old and need protection F-16/F-15 CAP's when used as SEAD. That's why the F-16 replaced it!

Their off-boresight aiming gives them the clear advantage in a close-in fight. Better ECM pods and jammer packages (A-50) take care of any BVR shortcomings. No actually the F4s in service have better engines and radars. Only very few experimental MiG29s have digital radars but many Phantoms have advanced radars and are capable of BVR. The overall maneuverability of the F4 will be also slightly better than that of the MiG29. The M61 cannon is also much better than the GSh-301.

Did you know they still use J-79s...wait for it.....as pumps on the big natural gas pipelines up here in Northern BC and Alberta. Theres a place in Fort St John BC where they rebuild them. I've always loved F-104's. There is a group in Edmonton, Alberta who are restoring one and I think they might have finished it by now.

This is Kelly Johnson's mach 2 class hot rod. Sure, it had some flaws and various unpopular characteriestics. But overall she's a real beauty in an aerodynamic sense & you gotta love the deafening roar of the old J-79 AB. Glad somebody's still flying this cold war icon. Hopefully some other wealthy person will make an F-8 Crusader flyable for some knock out airshow performances.

exactly... it was much more an interceptor than a fighter. The F-104G version used in Greece was a multi-role fighter (which means it was the original F-104 with the ability to carry air-to-ground weapons). The -G version had the NASARR F15A-41B radar which could also track ground targets, and also included inertial navigation and infrared sight. It was also able to carry nuclear weapons. Anyway, this plane was never successful as a dogfighter because of its limited maneuverability.

Just saw them sunday at the New England Air Show at the Westover ARB in Chicopee, Mass. Excellent show, minus the scary parachute mishap with the Jet truck. The truck went off into the grass field and flipped over. The pilot walked away though. Lucky.

Do you have a radio? I Keep hearing the Team leader talking over the announcer. Awsome vid and great camera work! I can tell you have seen the 'Birds quite a few times. I love the Thunderbirds, by far my favorite!

The Tbirds were cool in Anchorage, but the F-22 raptor sort of stole their thunder. The F22 is a wicked plane compared to the old F16s.
