Both maestros agree that Rubab was a precursor to Sarod and that Rubab was an Afghan musical instrument. Absolutely Rubab has never been an Arbic Instrument. the tabla is not going faster and then stopping...he's just doing some variations on the basic rhythmic cicle...the pulse and cicle structure always remains the same and since it is a cicle, it always goes back to the first beat! the leading instrument is the sarod, the tabla has some moments of improvisation and then gives back the space to the sarod...

Another facotor, In those days 1960's and 70's there was not much in terms of entertainment except movies. People did not mind long movies laden with songs and dances as long as heroins were beautiful. That was another reason Mughl-e-Azam was such a classic. To get even this much attention as for JA despite controversies this movie must be totally awesome. I honestly cant get enough of it.

Hi! For the 1st minute, here are the seconds where the Sam of this Jhaptaal falls on: 0:09 0:18 0:26 0:36 0:45 0:54 (9 seconds for each avartan). Notice that on 0:26, the tabla player is slightely too early, but quickly corrects the speed for the next rounds. At slow speed(vilambit), it's quite hard to keep the counting, because there is an alternation of unfilled and filled gaps with softer bols that interfere with the counting. With regular pratice keeping track of slow thekas becomes easy.

The 10 beat cycle is known as jhaptal. The bhols are dhi na dhi dhi na ti na dhi dhi na. And pandit Swapanji is playing the teka during many parts of this video so once you hear him playing the teka start counting by using the bhols I gave you and you should be able to keep up with the rest of this awesome musical piece.
