I was going on to instrumentation as a progression from the vocals. I certainly agree that the spirit of improvisation is extremely important in jazz, but what I actually said was that, for example many swing jazz are in essence very structured and not very "improvised" at all if you don't count the soloists. But voice? Voice really isn't essential. I could name a billion extremely important jazz musicians who don't implement voice in their music.

It's rare to read such an idiotic comment. Improvisation is the essence of jazz, and second to the importance of the spirit of improvisation in jazz are the harmonic voicings. You even admit this isn't jazz (irrespective of instrumentation), so I'm not sure why you are bringing up instrumentation. I certainly made no argument regarding instrumentation. You are like Sarah Palin in a debate, talking about Afghanistan after being asked about the economy.

Though this is in no way jazz. Jazz doesn't have to be improvised and can eb extremely structured. Jazz doesn't really have anything to do with vocals either, you can create jazz with anything, including voice, but it's not restricted to any instrument nor is any instrument a prerequisite.

"Jazz" metal would imply that there is some degree of improvisation and jazz voicing in the music. There are no jazz voicings in this whatsoever, and the composition is highly structured with little to no improvisation. "Jazz" is hardly the appropriate term to describe this. You say, "Like jazz, you either get it or you don't." You clearly didn't get jazz.

I'm not at all surprised that so many people dislike this group but the lack of respect for their musical ability and composition is discouraging. People seem to have no interest in the next generation of music that's developing, and this is it. It's a whole new level of complexity. I wouldn't expect this to appeal to mainstream listeners, but I hope they can recognize the talent behind it.

Man, I'm shocked to see how many people don't get this band. These guys rule. This IS structured music. This IS melodic music. It's just incredibly dynamic and inventive. If they're inventive geniuses, then so is the man who wrote the music for Super Mario Bros., cuz' this just sounds like glorified Nintendo music. Even Mozart and Beethoven knew how to keep a 'groove' going. The only thing these guys do have is technical proficiency. As for anti-melodic phrases....they do have their place, but these guys never come back to anyting. It's like they just try as hard as possible to not do anything conventional. to the untrained ear the intervalic choices may sound random, however they are very deliberate. one member of the band composes the songs and transcribes the parts for the other members. i'm impressed by the polyrhythmic abilities. such prompt dismissal of this music is indicative of a very limited musical experience and vocabulary. maybe if you actually took the time to study theory, sam, then you would understand that there are musical options available beyond verse/chorus I-IV-V structures.

ok; do a transcription, and THEN tell me just how "random" the intervals are. I guess "pleasing" is a pretty relative term, but having studied this I just can't agree that there wasn't some serious thought put into the harmony. For example, they always resolve to an F note against a B, creating a tritone. Maybe not pleasing to some, but I consider it part of the standard repertoire for heavy music.

Behold the Arctopus from New York. This is the opening song, "Canada", of their set in Baltimore MD at Orion Studios. These guys were absolutely amazing in their technique.

If you want to argue about what is over anybody's head, most guitarists in the world watch videos of Segovia's master classes and claim that he was a prick. In actuality, he was more sensitive to articulation than any other guitar player. That is an example of something that is over your head. Not this junk. Ha, what an arrogant, and frankly, idiotic argument. "Over your head," indeed. Fact of the matter is this music is very easy to understand. I get it. It's complex and it's dissonant. But it's not good. It's certainly music; that, I never disputed. The problem is it's not good. It's quite bad, and while it is technically music, it's a stretch to tell anybody that this sounds "good." You should listen to what your ears say is good instead of what your brain says should be "good."

These guys are one of those bands that seems to have forgotten that the sound a musical instrument produces is supposed to be musical, and the composition should serve that. I can comment on the music, too, if you'd like. It's complex for the sake of being complex. Sure, as a band, their playing is tight (though no individual musician's technique is particularly outstanding -- that's just an illusion created by how complex the composition), but the composition is thoroughly uninteresting and frankly, is obnoxious. But they've done a good job of convincing themselves of their own musicianship, and you just took the bait, so mission accomplished, I guess.

In a technical sense this is brilliant. It's unbeliveable that they are counting out that kind of time signature and consistantly playing in key on the guitar (not exactly the most appealing sounding key) through all that mayhem, chaosm and dissonance. As far as listening pleasure is concerned though, this is absolute balls. If they want to make enjoyable AND difficult music, they need to learn how to use those time signatures and scales and make clear and melodic music.
