I prefer Martha's later, maturer recordings of Rach 3. This one, while stellar, is a little choppy in the "touch" starting at 1:22 in the faster technical sections. The phrasing seems a bit too much "in the box" and metronomic in a way without that real "whisk" from the start to the end of the phrase. The singing unisono in the beginning and cantabile between 4 and 6 minutes is to die for though. Like Dave Matthews, she just has "so much to say" in those glorious moments.

I got it from a friend at camp this summer. I hadn't even heard of Sokolov before, let alone this particular recording. It's a bootleg, and I don't know where he got it. Maybe a friend of a friend. At least the first movement is available somewhere online though... And a Proms audience would explain why the crowd goes nuts at the end, but after a performance like that, who wouldn't?

ha ha! amazing that you mention that performance, from what, 1995 or something? I recorded it on cassette tape. Yes, he does actually top the Argerich (which I think is still the best commercial recording out there), especially the attack in the coda of the finale. Of course the Proms audience is one of the world's rowdiest. Where did you get your copy?

I don't think so, she has great fingers and a new Guinness records - "the fastest pianist in world" section, to beat every time again! No breathing, no poetry, no feeling. But, SHE IS HOLY and never try to say something bad on her technically perfect and emotionally vulgar, supersonic, arid playing. If this is your idea of what (great) classical music is about, then you may as well go play Guitar Hero and see how much enlightenment you find. As with most of her recordings, speed and technicality do not equate to the intellect and passion required to produce a truly marvelous work of art. I had no idea that Chopin wrote a Scherzo in D minor, but that's not Argerich's fault. As a musical description of a fire hydrant this interpretation is magnificent. As anything else, it is, quite frankly, just so much steaming dogshit. This is muddle, not music. I play this with fire, expertise, and mastery. She plays it like she's just had sex with half the judges on the panel. Oh yeah, she really did.

You actually think that it's distorted??? haven't you noticed how Argerich does not only play music with perfection and magnificent technique but when you listen to her, you feel like if she's talking through the music she's playing, her emotions are in her performance. No I dont think anyone will forget the pianist's of the past their music will alway's live on (Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven etc) who could forget. It is so distorted - the rhythms pulled so lopsided and what I consider to be a like soap opera version of Shakespeare. Exaggeration is to my mind never a component of the greatest art. Chopin's art is one I hold to be simple, magical, and always expressed in natural emotions - and to use the phrase of my great teacher -- always singing.

Agerich is perhaps my all time favorites pianist as well. But your analysis lacks depth. Surely even a cursory attempt to compare and contrast Argerich and Kissin must take into consideration that Argerich has cosmetically acceptable hair, and when young was stunningly beautiful; whereas Kissin, conversely, has incontrovertibly funny hair.

I have loved Martha's playing since I first heard her Chopin preludes when I was learning them. I was luck enough to hear her play Prokofiev 3 live in Toronto a few years ago - I had tears in my eyes during the 2nd movement - not something I usually expect from Prokofiev. She is uniquely special and most people talk about her phenomenal technique, but listen to her cantabile with a melody - that is what makes her truly special - not the splash or dash.

If you truly love to make music then NEVER give up. There are NO good teachers. Tchaikovsky received an F in composition for this concerto. Research it! Liszt said that the artist must FIND HIS OWN way. If your teacher does not treat you like gold then find another or teach yourself. A secret of the pros is no CAFFIENE. Believe it or not. She is another marvelous pianist. What talent. If you think that 3rd movement is easy, try those two-hand double octives around 5:10, fast, and see how many notes you hit incorrectly. If you can do it, you are not playing it correctly, fast like she does. Performances don't get better than hers. Simply marvelous.

This cadenza is actually much trickier than the ossia (heavy, chordal) cadenza. Musicaly I prfer the ossia, but this one is really fiendish whereas in the ossia you can really just dig your hands into the piano.

This is the original cadenza, and it is generally believed to be harder than the Ossia. The main differences between the original and the ossia are in the beginning, where the original has a fast run and quick, light staccato chords, the ossia utilizes heavy, long chords in the same progression. Both cadenza's climax and end the same. Andre Watts composed a hybrid cadenza that combines elements and themes from both cadenzas that I personally prefer.

well there are two kinds of human doing their passion. the one are men of honour and the other are tricky. i think she´s straight and fits her selfconvidence, if my english is able to express what i mean. the straigt humans have worse possibilities than the tricky. you are changing you charakter if you become a famous pianist, you have to fit in the role you get in. you have to fit in everything. but martha shows she is doing what she is believing in, it´s her religion!!! how authentic!!

As a general comment on Martha's Chopin playing, I would add that the man who, I think, set up the Warsaw Chopin Competition, when asked who his own favourite of all the winners was, named her. She certainly is not everybody's favourtite Chopin player, but I think with Martha you shouldn't even compare her to other pianists. She is, very simply, a one-off, and we should all be grateful to have experienced her whole artistic being. Is there any other pianist with such charisma and musicianship?
