Pilot error. Lt. Col. Arthur "Bud" Holland had been reprimanded several times for aggressive flying and not flying within USAF guidelines. He had quite a few flight crews ask not to be assigned as his crew. He should of been grounded on several occassions, but for some reason his Commanders did nothing but verbal reprimands, if that! Google him, you will find that he was not only aggressive in the plane but on the ground also, The word "Jerk" comes to mind when describing him.

The crash was caused by what is known as an accelerated stall. In that turn he's already turning tight.. I would say he's pulling 2 to 3g in that turn. He relies that he's about to over fly "fuel or bomb storage" which is agained the rules. So to prevent the over fly he turns tighter his air speed drops, the plane enters a skid and the lower wing stalls. There is no recovery possible he would need 2000 ft min to recover.

The problem was not the plane it was the pilot. If you check out the 9 min video you can see why. He should have been banned from flying and sent back to basic flight training as punishment. His only punishment was having a officer accompany him on flights. This big of a plane is not intended for the maneuvers he was doing. When it reached the tower the plane stalled in the turn and he lost control at that point. They ejected but they were to low to the ground.

How about a little respect for the dead... FYI, everyone on board was killed. Just prior to hitting the ground, the ejection hatch on the top of the plane can be seeing leaving the plane, but there wasn't time for the seat to clear the aircraft. The pilot had been repremanded many times over many years for flying outside of the B52 design envelope and showing off. The sad part is that although a lot of folks recognised that he was a danger, he wasn't grounded, and it resulted in this.

Actually its exceeding the critical angle of attack that causes the stall. In the B-52 crash they didn't stall. The lift was mostly lost in the turn, the horizontal component of lift that helps you turn was all they had left. Not enough rudder surface to compensate and keep it level in the turn. They over banked and the loss of the vertical component allowed gravity to pull them into the surface.

maybe you're right about the newb mistake though i doubt it, i was thinking rather that the airplane entered in a deadly spin(stalled) and was miss handled (pulling the stick instead of pushing it- counter intuitive- isn't it) It look 2 me it has very poor stall characteristics - and that might make it very hard to fly. The golden rule of all R/C planes of that size is..they fly just like the real deal. Too much bank and the plane stalls, just like the real ones. It's a form of reverse or "Negative Lift", the Huey does it too if it's nosed over too hard. I'm sure you've all seen the famous US Airforce B-52 crash ? If not, look it up and you'll see the exact same manouvre and end result.

Did you even watch the video? He made the typical newb mistake of confusing the airplanes relationship to him.(He thought it was banked the other way than it really was) Then he over corrected it. Well, not yet 50, but early 40s and saw 52s all around ATL in early 1980s - but were playing Fox and Agora Ballroom by then. Atlanta music scene was hot back in the day -- very creative and mix of all people. Lots moved to NYC in 1986/1987 though.

Thats just the coolest thing. You are right and I think thats what I love about them. They are so unique that if you had never heard of them and listened to a song for the first time, you would never know it was 20 years old. You are lucky to have enjoyed them in their debut.

I'm still here. In the late 70's when i first heard the 52's i just loved them, they were just so exciting and differen't. I've recently rediscovered them thanks to you tube and they still have the same effect, their music is timeless and will go on for generations.You know some of the older bands now sound dated and boring-but not the b52's, long may they continue.

Ok so the audience is in their 50s. Funny I don't know too many people that age that are that cool. Where are they??? Isn't that strange? This band was so ahead of their time that it took 10 years for most people to recognize them. Even more ironic is its this age range that tends to be hung up on dam Lynard Skynard and Janice. Thank God for the progressive early group, the truly innovative post war hippies of the world. They are the ones that gave this awesome band their start. WHere are they?

No, There was a group of about 8 of us and we are just barely visable here on the very left side of the stage, but as I recall I was kind of all over the place mingling(sniiiiiffffff) with people that night. God that is so weird I was only 18 then. Now I'm fixing to turn 49. I haven't really had time to go through and check 52 girls or devil in my car to scope out myself or anyone else I was with but I will.

It was very windy. Because of the wing span the wind can really push it and also it doesn't look like it has that many control surfaces so when something like this happens it will very difficult or almost impossible to recover from a manuver that an aircraft like this that wasn't made 2 do. And u always have 2 be ready for the unexpected. Expect crashes they will happen, don't think that you aare invinsible to any harm or accidents. And good work on the plane and I wish you luck in the future!!!

why do they always fly them on windy days seem like it basically most of theses crashes are happen due to wind and in turn stall when they turned it around into the wind or turned to hard and went nose first when it hit the win i some on here are due to bit falling off the plane or RC fail

but not all maneuvers are dangerous at an airshow. most are safe because the pilots practice and know where to "draw the line" before going too far and taking on too much risk. when you are flying a plane without ejection seats, and dont have a parachute, you cant bank more than 60 degrees legally or pitch more than i think 30?? (correct me if wrong) This guy was doing waaaayyy more than that, maybe legal since its military flying but not safe and definately not fair to the rest of the crew
