I am not sure if the statement by one Pope on contraception ( forget which one) is judged to be infallable, but there have been many different intepretations of his statement. @adstanra One thing which I look to is the documents which the See has published. The decrees which are considered infallible are remarkably consistent. One Pope is not claiming another's infallible statements as wrong. Over 200 Popes and yet, there is a clear cut message on faith and morals which is sold (not contradictory). Compare this to the U.S. Supreme Court which has a similar system of tradition. Especially today, there is no fear in overturning decisions of previous generations.

If such is true, then there would have to be a secure method for that deity to get teachings out to the believers. The source of that infallibility is not the people, but the Deity. Just as you or I can grant a gift to whomever we please, so to can God. Infallibility is simply a gift which stops the Church from teaching which would offend God.

Having gone through an atheistic phase in my twenties, I do remember being quite paranoid and always ranting about population control (having read Malthus) and the environment. I'm not defending socialism per se, but it does seem like a pretty specious argument to go from the observation that the implementation of socialism, or variants of socialism, failed in spectacular fashion in a handful of countries necessarily implies that socialism itself is completely unworkable. I don't think that the United States has more of a problem with greed and corruption than other nations, but that you're just interpreting the differing scale of things. There is plenty of both, of course, but it I think it just gets a lot of attention because the US is the wealthiest country on earth by far and the one where excesses and abuse of excesses are most visible.

I guess the more interesting question is this: why does America, which so many claim to be a "Christian nation", seem to have so much trouble with greed, corruption, and other excesses born of capitalism? I won't blame religion specifically, although many of the most prominent business leaders and conservative politicians claim to be very Christian. It seems that contemporary American Christianity could do a much better job of instilling its safeguards against greed and economic injustice.

This kind of reasoned response makes your videos worthwhile. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I find Moore provocative, and I'll catch it on video. We'd be better off if all capitalists shared the Catholic take on it. Sadly, capitalism leads too easily to the excesses you decry. My biggest quibble would be that "socialism" should be defined. the whole POINT of the movie is how corruption came out of capitalism, and this guy doesn't mention it at ALL. Moore is not against the free market all together, just some of the gross injustices it makes possible, such as the lack of oversight that caused the economy to be where it is. This guy is out to make Moore's arguments look somewhat reasonable, but really inconsequential in the whole scheme of capitalism's efficacy by ignoring his FAR most important points, HUGE corporate scandals.

Why should a group be protected from insult on the basis of what they believe however offensive to common sense or bonkers their beliefs may be? They have a choice to believe or not. People with a disability or black people dont chose their circumstances and hence deserve our protection as a society. Religion is a choice. Blasphemy to a religion is akin to treason to a nation or tribe. It is understandable why religions would regard blasphemy as the biggest sin seeing as the underlying purpose is to destroy the reverence shown to the founding belief. Science, on the other hand, "demands" that foundational beliefs/theories be challenged...it demands blasphemy or treason if such irreverence is justified by the proof of the falsehood of the foundational belief. False belief systems abhor such irreverent scrutiny.

I played at CAL when Bonds was at ASU, I once moved his bat away from the action after he hit a double, I noticed he was swinging a 32" bat, I did a double take, and pictured Dave Parker swinging a 32" bat. Oh it's called "The Philosophy of Tolkien." There's a free excerpt from the book that's already online that is fantastic. This is problematic in a larger sense of Jesus not accomplishing the job of taking away all of our violence, which you say he absorbs in the video. The condemning of people to Hell for challenging the nature of Jesus is also a problem - I can't see a greater apogee for violence than that.

There is something the movie does not deal well at the end: the ethical dilemmas. The 'boat problem' does not have a solution in theory, but with Batman intervention, the decision that were taken turned out to be the best - because of the consequences: no one died. Joker didn't fulfill his will because Batman prevent him to explode the boats. Do you think Batman personifies a non-omnipotent deity that protects humanity? (Thought I think this question fits better with Superman)

He offers depth in his music which isn't approached by some of the others. For instance, I believe Stephen Schackinger is very talented on the guitar, but I haven't heard one soulful word from that guy. Barron is different, and good in his own way. Even if he is the "worst" of CandyRat, that's like saying you're the worst Nobel Peace Prize winner. You're still amazing... Would you agree, or no?

Agreed, Candyrats offers amazing musicians. However, I beg to differ that N. Barron is the "worst". Personally, I find him to be the most genuine, soulful and artistically honest artists offered on the site. Clearly, his professional appeal, as evidenced by his recordings and dedicated following discount your opinion. Certainly, you are entitled to your opinion. I respect it. I'm cuerrently studying Mandarin using the FSI course as my primary method. I have to say I'm really impressed by the depth covered in the course. So far I've completed 2 modules in less than a week and the progress I've made (compared to Pimsleur's method) is astonishing. I'd like to know if the mandarin for that specific FSI course is outdated, and if so... would that be grave ? Thanks in advance !

I suggest you skip the first course, actually. If you use other materials until you reach a certain level of Korean, the second course will actually be useful. It's still outdated, but at that point you'll be able to recognize what you don't need.

From a current FSI employee: 1. FSI abandoned the old courses and their accompanying methodology years ago. Many language sections use modern commercial texts in their place. 2. The courses were written principally for training Foreign Service Officers, although they were surely used for other purposes. 3. The language used in all of the courses is outdated and in many cases inappropriate or even offensive. Be careful which lines you practice! 4. Don't pay for them if you don't have to!

Most of my favorite music is not mainstream. Learn to read because I never implied that music has to be popular to be good. As for hitting the notes, to me it DOES make or break a song. So hearing about them decides weather they're good or not? Plenty of shitty bands are well-known, it's stuff like this -- stuff that isn't as mainstream -- is the stuff that's great. Maybe you should learn something about the music business: hitting the right notes 100% of the time doesn't make or break a song.
