Easynet's (parent company of UKO) rollout of ADSL2+ only really went "national" after Sky purchased them. Be* are still the ADSL2* pioneers in the UK, Easynet/Sky can't ever take that title away retrospectively. The only truely national rollout of ADSL2+ will occur once 21cn upgrades are completed by BT.

I absolutely love my BE connection! Downloads are ridiculously fast and speeds always constant. DNS issues solved using treewalk, although needs to get fixed permanently for casual non-tech members as it's unfair to them. Now, if only i could move my house closer to the exchange lol. This seems like a pretty cool new service at a nice price - looks simple to use as well. Nice to see BE keep coming up with new ideas rather than stunting themselves like other ISPs.

Parents and paranoid people (and certainly paranoid parents) will love this facility. And if it bags a few thieving scum in the process it gets a thumbs up from me. I don't have the home monitor service, but I have the value broadband package, I pay for 8Mbps, and they give me 10.1Mbps! So if you dont want to get bullcrap speeds that are less than advertised, get Be! Disclaimer: I don't work for Be Broadband. :D

that made me cringe seein that. What a loada rubbish n waste of resources. Hey guys this is what happens when big corps take over like o2be2gether they want a fingers in all the pies and the service slowly goes down the pan. Time to find another provider i think. Im paying for a upto 20meg service since oct and only getting 4meg average with regular drop outs despite spending hours a week starting at number 27 in the support queue, the burglar woulda been n gone by then. Nuff said

But Be's claim to fame is that they were the first UK provider to offer ADSL2+; this is a half-truth as (like when Homechoice first started) it was only available inside a small geographical area! UKO's rollout was nationwide, therefore - to me at least - they win the crown for that one. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Be* customer for a long time now, and I love em :D but I wince when I hear those kinds of sweeping statements.

A little factual inaccuracy... UKOnline was the first UK ISP to offer ADSL2+ nationally, though only at 22mbps max. Be* offered 24Mbps, but only initially inside the M25 area. So, not *quite* right... Marks for effort though. :)

The wide infrastructure that we use today wasn't made by Al Gore and the ISPs have come to take it from him. They made the resources we are using on the Internet as we know it today. Even if everyone who pioneered the creation of a medium on every level of innovation did agree on it being regulated - which of course isn't the case - they wouldn't have the right to justify its regulation when they have allowed others to invest in creating a network of that medium.

As for your friend Tim, there are many Internet pioneers and they are split. We could also look at pre-Internet and post-Internet pioneers who contributed to what we experience today, and I'm sure a few wouldn't like the idea of a socialist cartel, either. Further, the Internet isn't this "place" that someone made that we all added stuff to. It's a medium, being carried by plenty of different individuals and companies - like ISPs - that we paid to create it.

Any ISP that decided to completely block anything that a reasonable segment of the consumer segment wants to see (as opposed to say, racist sites or something that the government shouldn't censor but they should) would be completely undercut by the profit motive of companies that want to appeal to that audience. Which is why, say, companies don't just arbitrarily not sell what they don't like and sell what they do like for insane prices.

Capping bandwith use for all because people are legally disallowed from paying for more if they're willing to - which would provide infrastructure-expanding capital - is, well, insane. This consumer price staggering is already done. It's letting sites pay to get more priority that's not being done. But the principle is the same. Let people who want to pay for extra resources pay for them and use them. This is what allows advances to happen.

Staggering prices on the consumer's side is already widely done. It certainly is in Canada. That's how everyone upgraded from dial-up to broadband during that period where both were available and broadband cost more. The higher costs were only for previous non-existent services, like DSL and Cable, and they always went down. If the Internet is going to continue to improve, people are going to have to pay.

There's no reason to say that staggering prices for anything will cause high prices anymore than it does in any industry without price caps. We live in a market economy where the potential for competition stops this. Pop companies aren't going to be stopped from charging different amount for different size bottles any time soon. Fedex and UPS aren't being regulated out of offering overnight delivery for a free - and when they did, their regular delivery didn't suddenly plummet in quality.

This is why net neutrality is not an issue here in Australia. Our ISPs are firmly against the removal of net neutrality. If the US goes ahead and removes net neutrality the US will become the iron curtain of the global internet. When Tim Berners-Lee created the world wide web he did so for the free exchange of ideas, not so some corporate interests could come in and coop it for their own uses.

Loss of net neutrality will kill the internet as we know it. It's naive to think that this is not what US. ISPs want to put into place. There is an alternative solution to the problem of growing load on networks vs growth of those network. Capped monthly bandwidth plans. Most of the bandwidth of any particular ISP is used by about 3% of it's customers. Capping bandwidth wont effect most customers, but will stop the small minority from using more than they've paid for.

Talk about over the top. Have you contacted Virgin Media about your speed problems? You may just be on the wrong service. Virgin Media tend to be good at supplying advertised speeds. Those on 2mbs, 4mbs, 10mbs get almost exactly those speeds. Virgin Media say on their website people on 20mbs will get at least 16mbs, which is fantastic when you compare it to DSL in this country.

I fully agree iwth the freedom fo the waves for making broadband access freely available to users. Particularly in the developing countries. Thanks for your comments. One aspect that really concerns me about BPL is its ability to blanket whole suburbs with broadband noise. I purposely left the alternator noise in the video. Originally I thought about trying to get rid of the alternator noise but realised it was a good reference. Fortunately, we no longer have the BPL problem as the power company made a decision in November 2007 to stop the trial and the BPL kit was removed from poles around Hobart in January 2008.

Another thing that obliterates shortwave, but to a lesser extent is cable modems, they load the whole house from 1800 kHz to 20 Mhz with what sounds like AC mains hum, I have to go outside with a Digital Voice Recorder to receive SSTV pictures. But your situation is MUCH worse. You can't even hear the alternator of the automobile, and you're right on top of it (car electronic QRM is REALLY LOUD, and BPL PLC in a far off house knocks it off the air). Here's my 2 cents. I understand that we all have different hobbies. But think of it this way. A hobbie (Ham Radio Users) doesn't make money. My computer buisness struggles to make it due to the lack of broadband access. My satellite connection doesn't give me the pingtimes I need to perform remote repairs and doesn't allow me to download over 200megs in a 2 hour peroid. BPL would increase my buisness's productivity.

Why is it when you give BT your mobile number because you're at work all day they still try to call you at home. When I called after 3 weeks to find out where my BT hub was they replied we attempted to call 3 times and there was no reply so we cancelled your order!! No message on the answerphone either! Sooooo... true about BT. Has anyone suggested that they get more operators if they have unusually high volumes? One day it took me 2 whole hours to speak to someone who then said you have come through to the wrong department despite my pressing the correct key. I think if there busy they will pass u onto someone no matter who it is. Then I spent another hour being passed from one place to another.
