While I don't have anything bad to say about Dave Brubeck, "He didn't play the same boring bebop that every other jazzer was playing at the time" doesn't have much truth to it. Which "boring bebop" that "every other jazzer" was playing? You should check out a few more records, I think.

Paul Desmond and Dave's work have immortalized them into musical history also really like everything else on the Time Out album its amazing that this came out in 1959 but didn't make it big untill 61.

I 100% agree - he IS a genius ... a just picked up his greatest hits and there is a short 2 minute track called "Bosa Nova" - what an AMAZING beat/tempo - he brought "COOL" to the world of jazz - heck .. I have my 12 year and 18 year sons loving it as well as my 16 year old daughter. In todays day and age of fabricated music thats say something ! truly GREAT stuff and I dont use that word great feely !

Brubeck is a Genius. He manages to play in times signatures that most jazz musicians would cry at just looking at them, and he really makes it swing. He broke away from the mainstream jazz idiom and tried something new and it was brilliant. He didn't play the same boring bebop that every other jazzer was playing at the time, he innovated a new genre and came up with a new style. Dave Brubeck is one of the most talented and original jazz artists of his time

As far as I know, Coltrane didn't play Take Five ever. You're probably thinking of the studio version, which I've seen on some music sites as being credited to Brubeck and Coltrane, but that's bogus info. :)

Truly an amazing piece. One of my favorite works of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond is AMAZING! I aspire to have such a smooth and solid sound as his sax. I remember hearing this piece when I was at Drum Major Academy (for the marching band) and I remember when the instrutors played this and made us conduct it--ultra FUN! Overall, a great piece and thank you for putting it up here.

Largemoose-You're thinking of Mozart's "Ronda Alla Turca" which is in 6/8 time. This is off Brubeck's "Time Out" album which was an experiment in musical time. It alternates between 9/8 and 4/4 time and sometimes they're playing in both. In those days it was very exotic.

the tempo makes the song really unique and cool but marching that song is annoying. becuase when you march 8 to 5 you march a regular sized step with the 9/8 time you have to wait a second. so its instead...step one s.two s.three s.four then pause for a count then again on the opposite foot

Well, you could TECHNICALLY call it 9/4 as well. However, the rhythms use quarter and dotted quarter notes as the pulse, so you would use 8 instead of 4. (instead of half and dotted halves, but you can still TECHNICALLY call it that). If you were to use 9/4, the tempo would have to be a huge number (in the 300's).

The add of bossa rythme is a really nice experience on Take Five. And Paul is definitely the greatest saxophonist, he plays only 40 seconds but it's difficult to describe the emotion that Desmond put into his instrument. Fabulous.

Blue Rondo a la Turk. Part 6 of lost Australian performance of Dave Brubeck Quartet hosted by Digby Wolfe.
The film was saved from destruction in 1984 and now is with the Australian National Film and Sound Archive.
A 1" PAL telecine transfer of the film was sent to Dave Brubeck's management in the mid 90s.

Paul Desmond was not only a legend, but one of the best alto saxophonists of his generation or any generation for that matter. I'm surprised that you don't your facts, so the only suggestion I have for you is to learn about jazz and actually listen, then you might learn something.

I live this song. In fact it's only a "disguised blues". For the tune, they use a simple pentatonic "oriental" scale. Desmond improvises on minor blues changes. Really great solo. Then Brubeck after few bars on the initial oriental scale goes to an interesting "free" improvisation.

Morello is one of the best drummers in the world in my opinion. He has brilliant technique, his hands are amazing, his playing is always musical especially his solo's, he played for the song. I can see where you're coming from with the B-section melody, but he's just weaving around it a bit. The solo and the comping though is just the style the Quartet liked to employ. They're all just masters of using space. Very rarely will you hear extended scale runs or sweeping long arpeggios. He was more about improvising a melody rather than riding the changes. That was a good point to bring up though.

Paul Desmond one the authors of cool jazz. I really like his style of playing. Miles said once it's not how many notes you play but the ones you don't play are whats important. That's what Paul did. Not a lot of flash and speed but precise notation in the jazz style. To bad his smoking habit led to his death in 1977. You can see here that he runs out of air before he can finish the first bridge/chorus at 0:30 and again at the closing bridge/chorus.

Good effort, works well in places. Here's the "but": some rhythmic/phrasing logic est. by Radio. doesn't mesh w/Bru., esp. Thom's melody vs. trumpet. They don't compliment each other according to the rhythmic logic. Some harmonic implications that need to be paid attention to. Lastly, the Radio. channel is louder than the Bru. Also, try cutting Radiohead rather than Brubeck more often

ahhh ya'll are just making it more complicated than it is, just count it 1,2,3,4,1,2,3. makes the clapping part super easy (2,4,2&). hey and I am not saying dave brubeck and his mates were tops, they were. and the ending isn't a mistake i think that's the coolest, playing shave and a haircut 2bits, but turning it on the end note back to the beginning and repeating(since it is the same note)...AND fitting it in 7/8?!! genius

I'm not too much of a jazz fan, I'm more of an ABBA person as my channel suggests! But I have to analyse this song for an assignment, and also, I learntthis song on clarinet, I must admit it is a great song, but it is hard to play because of the 5/4 time signature (if you know about music, it isn't exactly a common time signature) but I know that there is heaps of information about jazz musicians and styles of jazz and such on wikipedia if that helps you at all.

To clarify: the music i used in this video is from one of my father's old LPs. Yes, it is Paul Desmond on Sax. I digitized that LP. You can here the cracks during this video. The actual music from the performance that night was different of course. The footage used is not even from the song Take Five. Look closely at the Sax player (Robert Militello) and you'll see that his movements don't really match the music. As i write: this is a collage.
