I'm no buddhist but looking into buddhism has let me be more tolerant towards others, and it aided me in retraint when my friend chose his religion for without buddhism research I would of burst into his face in a rage and told him off... Although now that we rarely talk I feel good knowing that he found his place in life, and I also feel that if I keep looking into different religions I'll find my place in life. (but I'm leaning more into buddhism really) Thanks for posting this :D.

Basically Buddhism explains the universal truth and no one can escape from it. Lord Buddha has clearly explained why we r here and how much we r suffering. Most important thing is he has explained a clear way to end this suffering forever. This is what we should explore by ourselves. The more you dig into the Buddhism the more u can find the truth. There is no fakeness or secrets in Buddhism. Because it clearly says come and see by urself. And then take a decision.

actually buddha was very real because there are books & books of teachings. most of these teachings (not all) are about tangible things that can be experienced by a human being today. when they are put into practice, spiritual happiness & peace can be found and suffering can end. thus the efficacy holds true. there is no fakeness because we can realise for ourselves, within, what is purported to be the teachings of the buddha

Lord Buddha's struggle for realization of the truth took him six long years. One of the first lessons he learnt was to seek the Middle Path, that is not to go to extreme ends.He realized in order to calm the mind to gain purification we must be moderate in all aspects which is an eternal truth. He didn't meditate under the Bodhi tree without drinking water or eating any food. He took enough food and water that gave him the strength to meditate and ultimately achieved the great Enlightenment

Infact scientists and doctors in indian now both agree that if Buddha did what they said he did, which is meditate under a tree in Bod-gaya which is in Bihar for many years without shelter, food and water...he would be dead. The amount of views this trailer has is a bit suprising. It is refreshing to hear those familiar with Buddhism speak, but not much light is being shed here. The DVD for this trailer is 5 & 1/2 hours long and considering the length of the DVD this trailer is way too short. Now I'm not really sure if it is worth 55 dollars. You could buy at least 4-7 books on Buddhism with that money.

on the contrary, if u urslf want to find the truth, and "awaken", u need to follow this eight fold path, and u should develop ur mind up to such an extent that u wouldn't hurt anyone, period. I guess it is hard to imagine something of the sort these days.. It would seem quite foolish, but i for one do try to build up that state of mind... I am not quite there yet (actually i may be like a hundred thousand year away from that mind set) but i am known to be a peaceful one so im happy! :P

His name was not "Shakyamuni". This title was given to him later. It means "the sage of the Shakya clan". His name as a child was Siddhattha (Pali) or Siddhartha (Sanskrit). That is my understanding of it, anyway.

Yes it is for the monks to maintain their pureness. However, one could make the notion that since you are looking for purity and guidance, those rules should apply. It's no different than being a Christian and asking God for forgiveness for acting out the homosexual sin and then commit the same offense twice. The more you surrender yourself to the impure acts and motions, the less relevant any religion, Buddhism included, will be, as you are now God.

In the vinaya pitaka the Buddha has mentioned 4 genders who should not be allowed to become monks.The reason for imposing this rule was that due to the sexual orientation of these 4 genders their inclusion could cause caos within the sangha society. Could it be that you have misunderstood this? The Buddha has never mentioned in any of his sutras with whom a layman should or should not enagage in sex. If you still insist otherwise please let us know the name of the original pali sutra.

dragonlord10, Vinaya pitaka describes the conduct of monks(bhikkhus and bhikkhunis).It does not have any guidance or rules for the laymen. Monks are prohibitted from any sort of sexual activities regardless of the gender. Vinay pitaka has 3 parts. 1. Suttavibhanga 2. Khandhaka (A.Mahavagga B.Cullavagga) 3. Really? Sorry, but the Pali Canon clearly states that your kind are Pandaka. Some of the more major parts of Buddhism has that requirement of "refraining" from impure acts of sexual gratification which pretty much sums up homosexuality. Escaping from one religion to another in order to find a justification for your behavior abnormalities does nothing. even Buddhists have standards. Better to be Unitarian. They cherry pick everything and will always uplift the sins of man over God's wishes.

For Pali, the oldest canon is Vinaya. It speaks of 4 genders that males are not permitted, forbidden, to engage in sexual practice with. Supposedly the modern definition of a homosexual is Pandaka. Vasubandhu considered these people to incapable of spiritual discipline because they defiled themselves unto men and women and were unable to control themselves. Which is funny, if a queer can't handle buddihism, how could they handle any other religion except for: none?

This is an odd style of Buddhism. To say that animals are persons is not only a distortion of the English language but it is not Buddhism as such. There are six realms of this world-system: hell, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, titans, and heaven. Being born a human is not the same as being born a human (except metaphorically or spiritually). What he means is to say that animals are sentient beings, and therefore deserve the same respect as persons.

And that's according to 1 scholar. They were written about 100 years after he died, but there were councils held between Theravadins and the other early Buddhist schools (all of which included Buddha's disciples, a bunch of monks, and a bunch of nuns) where they shared the Buddha's teaching before they actually wrote them down. Saying Buddhism is unorganized and not having a "pope" avoids the corruption of power is a bit delusional. There is a corruption of heirarchy in many branches of Buddhism. I believe that there is a lot of great things about Buddhism, but at times I think it is TOO peaceful and too nice. True, there has rarely if ever been a drop of blood shed in the name of Buddhism. But look how many times it allowed Muslim conquest to take over, without defending itself. Buddhism was lucky to survive in countries that let it survive: it is so peaceful, that it allows conquests to eliminate itself. It's great to be peaceful, but no to where you lose who you are to other forces.

The notion of sects as we know it in the West is non-existent in Indian religions, including Buddhism. The difference in teachings is the level of awakening claimed. Gautama, before he became the Buddha, studied with several teachers. But he was never satisfied with the level of enlightenment he realized under them. After his enlightenment he wanted to share it with his former teacher, Alara Kalama. Mahayana, it could be argued aims at Buddhata whereas Theravada is content with Arahanta.

My understanding is that basically there's three perspectives of reality; one is an understanding that reality is occurring and real, the second understands that the seeming realness is fleeting and groundless and the third acknowledges both perspectives and understands that these two perspectives are indispensable in realizing the ultimate truth which dismisses a conception of reality being possible. i've read some of your points and you make very compelling points. i've been thinking about Buddhism quite a bit, but more as a quintessential philosophy as opposed to a religion. isn't plausible that Buddhism was a movement that arose to address the unequal Hindu societal structure and doctrine that served as a reconciliation between Hinduism and Jainism (the two extremes)? Also, isn't it plausible the discrepancy between the three major schools are a result cultural-religious symbiosis?

I'll say this for the very last time. If we do not even have the right view, we haven't started to walk the noble eightfold path. You can argue all you want, but this is the advice I am giving to people who wish to take a deep breath and start seeing things with an unbiased mind. A person will never reach Nibbana if that first step has not been taken. He can pray , cry, chant , do rituals, send out metta and vow but this will only bring him to heaven. I second that. I myself am of orthodox origin, but im atheist. I got into the eastern religions just because of that, theyre not theistic, theyre more like philosophies, Tao and Confuchi especially, although Buddhism has some metaphysical stuff like reincarnation,astral, it still has some solid philosophy and rationality that i like.
