Seems like self-pitying woe is me autobiographical fiction that predicted the let-me-tell-you-about-my-horrible-childhood genre of the 90's and early 2000's. I think the reason I began to appreciate Bukowski in the first place was because his poetry didn't /try/ to be obscure. But the topic, of how life can be, or how he sees it; why is that a cliche? Is talking about love cliche? Or death? I don't think there's anything I can talk about, then, that's not cliche. Maybe cockroaches or Baltimore or something. But I'm sure the poet laureate of Maryland would have something to say.

I started reading Bukowski a few months ago, mostly because I was so sick of everybody speaking about him and his bizarre way of living. The first book I bought was "Erections, ejaculations..." and I found it great. Then I got "Factotum" (which I think is his best) and then it was "Ham on Rye". I was amazed there was a man bold and brave enough to live like he did, swimming against the current and yet, someone I can relate to.

You are wrong. He was what many whould consider an existentialist. It is a philosophy in whick one feels alientated in a an "meaningles and absurd world". Post WW1 was considered the lost generation, but he represented that also. He was not a bum. He was always employed, working shite jobs. Of recent I'm unsure of Bono and U2. frankly, I don't like there music of late (10 years of it more or les...), and I think bono is mixed up politically and so forth. A hypocrite perhaps, but few are'nt. If you brush away all that history and listen to him without that shite, you may appreciate it. I was surprised.
