En el XL Campeonato de Europa Senior realizado en Tenerife España en 2005,la final de kata varones equipo fué disputada por las selecciones de España e Italia,aqui el equipo italiano capitaneado por Luca Valdesi realiza el kata Gankaku y su respectivo bunkai,con este kata Italia se coronó campeón mundial en el sistema WKF en Tampere Finnlandia en 2006.

Of course you're correct. I actually misread the original comment. What I *meant* was that it's my opinion that 'sport kata'. Karate is a waste of time to learn, because when you see them fight, all you see is kicking and punching. All the fancy moves they do in the kata is not used. You might as well learn boxing for your arms, and ballet for your legs, because that's all we see when we see karate students, and their teachers fight in competition. Bottom line, if you what to fight like a karate master, then go to ballet classes and buy a punch bag, that way you will not waste your time on useless kata. AMEN.......

io conosco tutte e 3 le arti marziali in questione e: il muay thay fa veramente schifo, esteticamente orrendo, inutile e per essere un minimo forte devi trovare il maestro bravo; la boxe non ha gambe e si basa sul semplice fatto di prendere a pizze il tizio davanti senza un minimo di teoria, storia, rispetto e formalità (non è un'arte marziale, è uno sport...). They perform this far better than Mr. Valdesi does. Their stances are much more accurate, and their speed does not come at sacrifice to accuracy, far as I can tell. I still, however, find the team aspect to be rather pointless, but that's not related. Very nice video. :)

Good interpretations. They suit the agility of the demonstrators. Some good principles have been drawn on and I agree that there are many bunkai for a kata. I do not agree that there is one one.. If you compare the Enoeda to Abernathy to Morris to Kanazawa bunkai for Bassai.. who is right? The key is in the principles not the application.

Well, Bassai Dai does mean "Storming the Fortress" and has applications that focuses on powerful techniques and strikes i.e. Yamazuki so there is a reason why defensive techniques like Shuto-uke are used for attacking.

This is one of the issues I see in modern Karate today. I do not believe learning the right way will make you rigid, as to learn Kata, just a part of the over all knowledge, it is important to have the keys to do it correctly. Kata is meant to train us how to do a certain series of techniques, practice teaches us to be able to modify that into our needed application.

It sounds good, but if that is the case why not perform the Kata this way? There is a set of Bunkai that go with the Kata, if we use different techniques, that is great, but we now are using Oyo, our interpretation, to the techniques of Kata.

I have to disagree. If we allow ourselves to think that each technique is the only way something can be done, we become excessively rigid, and we'll find ourselves sorting through a menu of techniques for them to be effective when we need them. By learning that each technique within a kata represents movement and dynamics necessary for, and which naturally occur in, a combat situation, we learn that the kata is not meant to train us to be rigid, but to train us to be free.

Bunkai varies. It's narrow minded to believe that there is only one interpretation. The variations in kata amongst the traditional systems is precisely due to the variations in interpretations. It could be a down block sometimes, a strike others, or a take down, etc., etc. This, being open minded and understanding the priciple of adaptation according to the circumstances, is "key" in understanding kata.

about the "tall lean" thing going on here.. i think it depends on the style of karate really, if you look at the founders of each style they're all built differently. a tall lean person would be more suited to wadoryu which takes advantage of extra reach and uses a more evasive style whereas kyokushinkai is more suited to a stronger shorter stockier sort of person cause it focuses more on strength.. i think the founder used to knock out bulls or something haha well thats my bit of babble done

I believe at 4:36 when he was half-squating and after he did the block the bunkai should have been to simply punch the groin from that posture rather than stand up to kick. Great bunkai by the way.

like all kata there are usually more then one and sometimes many explanations for every move. This movie showed some ways i would never think of first because they are simply not the obvious ones or that good for that matter, however i do like seeing personal interpretations of katas and how bunkai should be performed in the eyes of others. so thank you for uploading this.

bassai sho is a kata used to teach sweeping and unbalancing your opponent. Why is there none of this shown? Like O uchi and Ko uchi gari, many of the techniques in this kata are the exact movements you would find in judo. I know every technique could have several different applications, but give me at least one sweep I want to see someone hit the ground.

Yes, but 25 years ago I was doing this type of training with Chinen in Goju Ryu & with my Shorin Ryu Sensei. These drills teach both sides of the kata, so in essence you are learning 2 kata. 54 becomes 108, 18 becomes 36, etc. and I am not talking the specific kata of that name. Just look at some of the stuff that Nagamine was doing in the 60's.

Hah, now if you look at the Higaonna/Chinen tape from the 70's you will see them doing a similar drill to Gekisai kata. Have you trained w/ Chinen personally? What does he teach his seniors? I know and like Patrick, too. But once again, omote bunkai has long been a tradition in Oki Karate....I have substantial proof to back up my statements. Long b 4 my friend, Patrick even visited Oki, Japan & China.

Exactly, most Shotokan dojo has lost their way when it comes to bunkai. Due to the JKA's influence after WWII and the onset of the University teams, there was a greater emphasis on competition than the bunkai. Plus the Japanese adopted a more militarist way of teaching, i.e. Stand in lines, commands barked at you. It is much different in the Okinawan dojo. Much more individual practice. This could be a partial answer.

You are correct - I took a few years of TKD (almost ashamed to admit it) but in all that time no instructor ever taught applications of the kata. Only since I began Goju Ryu 15 years ago was I taught bunkai and their hidden meanings. Each one is like an unwritten book as one discovers hundreds of uses and applications for each movement.

kata include inferred or 'hidden' [hiyaku] waza, such as headutt, takedown and so on, as in this excellent teaching demo.. how cant you use eye gouge, elbow to head,neck etc, rip to throat, testicles etc, whipping strikes to eyes, groin, arm breaks, finger breaks, dislocations, kicks to knees, groin, ribs, etc ? basic kata is for beginners, as is basic bunkai and oyo.. dont confuse beginners karate or kata with advanced karate, kata or bunkai/oyo..

The Kata doesn't have an ability of it's own, it's the person who uses it, and I stand by that fullheartedly. It's true there's a lot of crap Karate out there, but when you do things like take moves out of the Kata or form and drill them seperately and have sparring where you only use that tech., you can develop your ability in using Katas, forms, sets, etc. in fighting.

This really is quite good. I'm sure that many of these apps can be applied in sparring as some seem quite practical. I hate Karate bashers because they just haven't experienced this stuff, which is really good.

Understood. When I say we diverge on bunkai, I also am referring to my own interpretation. Nor is mine based on IOGKF. I've never been in IOGKF. I trained with Gosei Yamaguchi and Don Buck. In that organization, a player is on his own in coming up with bunkai.

Thank you very much. It's completely understandable that we dissagree on the bunkai - because this is NOT the IOGKF bunkai! This is completely self-composed, since we were asked to make a performance similar to what could be seen at WKF competitions :-)

haha - at the sayonara party a lot of people asked me if she really did slap me or if it was fake... - she really did... and I felt it quite clear - but we had talked about it and agreed that since we had been chosen to perform at the masters demonstration, we wouldn't hold back in any of the bunkai... So yeah, it did - but it was all worth it :-)

again, that was very impressive. But in all seriousness didn't that slap HURT??? Me and my housemate winced when we heard that. He tested for shodan at the Budosai and he told me that this demo was his favorite. Well, thanks again for your posts!

nice, love the take downs. Just like to say Bunkai is different for everyone because everyones interpretation of the kata is different. Bunkai is only limited by your imagination and knowledge of martial arts. Keep up the good work guys

Master Funakoshi trained with Master Kano in Judo. So it is possible that this could be a takedown. At first, I ALSO thought it was a bit of a stretch, but it does seem to fit here. (who knows?) I understand what you are saying though. I look at some of the bunkai on you tube, and I think that I am looking at ju jitsu. It is very nice to watch, and the people are skilled, but karate is very simple, as it should be. The takedown here seems to fit. I could be wrong.

Very nice. Interesting takedown. I always understood the opening second technique (shortribs punch with other hand to ear) to be a block with a simultaneous punch (a shotokan rarity) After seeing this, I now wonder whether it COULD be a takedown. It is simple, (unlike other youtube bunkai) and does fit there. Sometimes things get lost in translation, but this is very interesting. I am going to bring this up at the dojo. Thank you. All of your techniques look very nice.

Why not? Takedowns are great at discouraging attackers. A takedown can cause serious damage and give you time to escape.
