I concur with you. For as long as I can remember people have referenced this song whenever I meet someone new. My given name is Alfio but my mother always addressed me as "Alfie" ... and for many years I got to learn of Burt Bacharach's beautiful song. And he really does do it justice. I actually like this performance best, even though Ms. Warrwick does a fine job of it too.

I love this song, I always loved Burt Bacharach and his beautiful music. I thing he is really sincere and moved when he sings Alfie, but it's a difficult song to sing and it should be sung by professional singers. Anyway, he is a great composer. Thank you for this video.

Yes indeed he was! Unfortunately he and Burt had the falling out after "Lost Horizon" (which I feel produced some of their very best work despite the movie flopping, although I was one of the few that liked the movie too). Burt later claimed that David wrote the lyrics and left, leaving Burt to not only write and choreograph the music but to teach people how to sing the words and music (e.g. Sally Kellerman). Sad and unfortunate that it ended this way because they both provided so much to us.

Hal David did write like your maintaining but the short measures and time signature changes within the same tune suggest the words came later on those particular songs. They both talk about that in the book that came with the multiple CD Box set released a number of years back. My original comment was written during a listening of Windows of the World-one of those short measured tunes. Besides, Sammy Cahn told of having melodies without lyrics yet. My real point is David's genius !

Imagine the difficulty Elton John had in trying to develop the tune when Taupin wrote the lyrics to "Crocodile Rock". Elton had the tune in mind and had to compress the lyrics just to get them into the chorus...and the rest is history. The best music is the result of a great lyric having a great composer to write a tune to fit that lyric.

Hal David was an incredible talent but I would suggest that like most great lyricists, the words are put to music rather than vice-versa. Like Elton John & Bernie Taupin, or even Rodgers & Hammerstein, the lyrics are the first to come and the musician puts tunes to the lyrics. So while David did write some incredible lyrics, credit must also be given to the composer (Bacharach) who was able to apply those catchy tunes to the words written.

Why does no one just come out and say it ... HAL DAVID is the lyricists; LYRICIST ! I love Cole Porter; Tom Jobim; and Lennon & McCartney; but Mr. David is 'Whack' ! He is the most consistant song writer over the longest period of time. Bacharach's music is difficult to write for; with his short measures and changing time-signatures within a tune. Yet, this man manages to write words that carry you thru all that and still manages to pluck at your heart strings. HAL DAVID - one bad Motha !

Barbra's seducing look at Burt is priceless. I think she was really into him, but that what made this video great. You see the difference that were having in music now in days is that our young singers now in days aren't feeling their music and using voices from heaven like Barbra, McCool from 5th Dimension, and Karen Carpenter did in their songs. Singing is an art, esp at the standard Barbra sings. That means it takes creativity. And of course not everyone can learn to sing. Are you dumb?!? My sister has been trying to learn to sing in tune for years and till now she's still the only one in our family that can't sing.

You know, too bad they didn't try to simulate this scene in the movie with LIV ULLMANN teaching the children a new song as a "music teacher" with a piano, rather than a full scale production number. Why do I just give away the ideas? The inventions I showed on Johnny, I had already shown to various companies, using disclosure agreements. I had no success with them. LH is an easy target for people who think their film connoisseurs to put down. It's unabashedly sentimental and romantic and mixed with modern songs. LH is not "lost" on the right audience. It can be enjoyed on several different levels. At this stage of the game putting it down tends to say more about a ones own tired cynicism than it does about the film. I beg to differ. LOST HORIZON is not a bad movie. In fact, it's a very strange mixture of straight drama and musical comedy. The film isn't "lost" on the right audience. Why shouldn't Shangri-La be a slightly goofy place? It's the score that makes this film unique. I disagree with the comments that your version of this song is better than the one in the film. It's a tribute, yes, but you're also mocking it.

No, I don't think it was anything like that. Search YouTube for Great Performances Burt Bacharach Part 6. Herb Alpert and Richard Carpenter talk about the song, and how it was changed at the behest of Alpert, and wasn't anything malicious, or other than that, just thought it could use a different arrangement. Side note, I knew of the Carpenter's version first, and came across this version by accident. I have to say you can definitely feel Bacharach more in this version than the other!
