It looked liked he was swooning over his own performance. LOL. Otherwise, great playing. I've played this on classical guitar but piano renditions always sounds very romanticized to me of this classic baroque violin piece. Maybe it's because the piano is capable of much greater dynamics than the guitar.

I've always wondered how come composer and arranger got equal credits in such pieces but now I know the answer: this is piece was 100 pct written by Bach and 100 pct destroyed by Busoni (well, maybe only 99 pct, the greatest single movement of music ever written did manage to show some resistance).

Very enjoyable, I felt that it kept the character of the Violin Partita without turning into a piano showpiece, based on a violin masterpiece. However, I think that he missed out on some fantastic moments that Busoni wrote that can happen only on piano, for example the moving inner voice that happens during the arpeggiated section near the beginning.

Not that fond of how he begins this piece but lots of moments of sheer brilliance, both musically and technically. Love those controlled octaves near the beginning. This is such a huge piece of music that embodies so much of the human experience that when you perform it, it can totally take you over.

Sound like I am a great fun of Faz?l Say. No I am not.. But I have great recsept to him. He can move howmuch he wants :D.. But for my case I do not move as much as him while I am on stage. :P also, I make problem with some pianist who tries to act Faz?l say or move real lots to be considered as Good Musician.. Real tragic and comic.. anyway, I understand u. For Bach Musician should stand behind of music. but this is Busoni arrangment which let performers to feel free on 'romantic' stuffs.

Sorry if I seem to be without respect. Was not my intention. I agree he is a very good pianist and have a lot respect for musician who are on the stage. Because I am also a musician who lives from this profession being on the stage. it is not important how much a musician moves because it is something personal. I was just curious because listening him and watching him is so different.

I am VERY, VERY, VERY interested in hearing more of Busoni. Apart from basics on UTube, all I've heard was from an old (3?) LP set of player piano rolls entitled "Busoni Plays Liszt". Any of that woudl be a joy to hear again as well, particularly the Don Juan Fantasy was simply brilliant, and I think there was a La Campanella too.

Hi cziffra1980 I believe that most player pianos are plagued by all sorts of mechanical problems by now. Especially correct speed is an issue.The way forward would be to use computers to read the rolls and play the code back on an electronic piano. Yikes ! Yes I know but we would get around the mechanical lag.The recording may actually be much better than we realize. Has this been tried ?

I agree with you. The piano must vibrate like can a violin or human voice, specially in this thema of the beginning, veru intense. at least, give the illusion of that. Well in this performance, the chords are played like a percission as a piano. He's very intelligent but the intelligence without heart is a little boring.

This is an excelent performance!! Like everything Hamelin plays. When Busoni wrote this transcription he wasn't thinking about the original piece for the violin! He was probably trying to make the piano sound like a church organ or an orquestra!! This piece is more a Busoni piece then a Bach piece. A person saying that it should sound "like a violin piece" obviously doesn't know this transcrition well!!

Sure, you might be able to turn some phrasing tricks, or roll chords in a certain way, but a piano is going to sound like a piano, whether you like it or not. That's because this transcription WAS written for piano. Busoni was a master pianist; Hamelin is playing his *transcription* of Bach's chaconne. Hamelin is a very intelligent man; he is likely very aware that this piece was originally for violin, and has probably heard it a thousand times. Again, though: this is not a transcription in the style of solo violin, so what binds Hamelin to playing it as such?

I have seen him perform live in New Orleans years ago. He is an amazing artist (notice I did not say musician, though he is that too) - his control of dynamics is just unbelievable - you must experience this live to believe it. Gave me goose bumps to hear him perform. He can make the piano sigh, cry, laugh, mourn and any other emotion you can imagine. Elizabeth

Wonderful! I've been working on this piece on and off for the past few years and appreciate the difficulty of this piece. To a certain extent, I've always thought the Busoni arrangement could be called "Stride Piano vs. Bach", in light of the stretch chords/octaves and melody lines being passed from hand to hand. Yes, wonderful performance, but why i get the feeling bach and chopin is not for him? (yet) Maybe just my personal feeling only, but he sounds originl and eccentric with Prokofiev and Rachmaninov and Liszt. I can't get enough of him playing Prokofiev. but bach and chopin....maybe when he gets older??

The Masterworks archives also has the complete 65 Return Concert's rehearsals and soundchecks which contain much of what was in the recital - but with more assured technical playing. Sony COULD have released some of that as bonus material to the reissue of that concert rather than the familiar '63 studio recording of Kindersczenen. I wrote to Thomas Frost asking him to release more from the CBS vaults but I still haven't heard back from him. Sony/BMG is still sitting on a gold mine...

You're right. To me, this recording is all about infinite pianistic and creative power. It totally transcends the instrument. It sounds like he's eating the piano alive. Of course, if he weren't as analytically and creatively brilliant as he is pianistically, we wouldn't care so much. But he is, and here it all comes together. A titanic recording! And a very different thrill from 1965.

i'm delighted you like it - and that we have multiple horowitz recordings to compare. personally i prefer the '65 for its spaciousness and tone-coloring (beneftiting i'm sure from hugely improved sonic technology and stereo), but this is a totally different take - all a function of that huge horowitz creativity.

I agree with some who hold that the transition from organ to piano is a difficult one & it becomes apparent, especially with this wonderful Bach piece. Those who "speed-up," do so, to help bridge the awkward differences. I think this piece was definitely intended by Bach to be "slow" & contemplative & is best played in this way. I do not think your version is "boring" & the person who suggested it must not be musically well informed. Thank you for sharing this video.

I guess everything's possilbe in Bach as you say but this was written to be performed on an organ originally, and there the sound of the long sustained note doesn't die away but here it does and would on a great steinway too!!! It's a small weakness of our intstrument. Listen to Lipatti, very fluid and an a Steinway. Makes it work very well.

Great Work. Amazing singing tone. If a little tip would help, I'm preparing this same work and one comment I got was that they middle line could be shaped a little bit more easily if the tempo was a bit faster and I found that worked in getting the overall picture good. It felt like it sat and didn't move some of the time.

I agree completely. Part of the beauty of this composition is the stark, bleak quality created by leaving the whole piece to a single violin. Bach manages to use the violin so effectively that the polyphony feels complete, but that bleakness remains. By adding so much ornamentation to the piece and that major chord at the end, Busoni has lost some of what gives this piece such tremendous impact in its original form.

The violin original ends on a unison d, leaving the choice of major or minor up to Busoni. Bach usually ends on a major chord, even in a minor key piece. Performers do it differently. I don't remember how Busoni does it on his piano roll, but someone could check it.

Yes, Busoni wrote another set of variations. This opus is called 10 Variations on a Prelude of Chopin, Opus 28 #20 written in 1884. I was fortunate to get a copy before it became out of print.

I am not sure what version he is playing?, Busoni's Op.22 is the Variations and fuge on a C minor prelude by Chopin. This is not what Fabio is playing. Could it be possible that Busoni wrote another set of variations on the same prelude???. None of the publishers that I have contacted seem to know about it either.

I entirely agree about this performance.I guess it doesn't get done often because of its difficulty (like the Fantasia Contrappuntistica), because there are two separate versions of it, and because people would rather see Grimaud play the Chaconne!

The only reason that I could think of that most pianists don't have this in their repertoire could be because it has been out of print. It took me one year after I ordered it for it to be sent to me. I searched every music store and every website that I could find to get a copy and received responses that it was out of print. In 2005 I finally received a copy from Germany (I'm in America).
