Wow I didnt know we had this one for the C64. I tried it on my friend's Amiga later (when my C64 was already considered to be an ancient artifact :D). Its very well made actually. I had Test Drive for the c64 and they had not figured out how to make you see ahead (i.e. the road would suddenly start turning etc.).. so this is really well done considering the tech level.

It still amazes me how programmers on the C=64 manages to get so much out of the machine, as seen with this port, or "G.I.Joe" or "Street Fighter". The C=64 truly was a masterpiece of engineering, just like it's Amiga relatives.

LOL C64 for the win, I had one of these in 1985, remember how excited I was. How they did this is completely amazing, and shows what the C64 was capable of...remember this thing was out when Atari, Intellivision, and Colecovision were out! Both the C64 and Amiga were way ahead of their time. This is awesome!

This one is a great piece of code. 1st time I hear voice samples in a mega demo. (actually uninterrupted mega demo, not demo parts, like for ex. Cycleburners/Contex ones). Also I don't know the original demo (on Amiga ??), but I am impressed by this one.

That was a great conversion. It couldn't keep on par with x86 but it was solid and I could spot some "cheats" like the pseudo transparency int he "balls" at the beginning.

tjo..früher hat man die software nach der vorhandenen hardware programmiert.. heute wird einfach irgendwas programmiert, und der user darf sich die hardware passend zur software kaufen damits irgendwie läuft. hat man kein geld für teure hardware.. tja.. arschkarte.. wennde dir früher was fürn c64 gekauft hast (software) hat die darauf auch funktioniert. heute kaufste n spiel und danach erstma ne neue graka, weilse zu lahm/alt is.. oder direkt n neues sys weil aufrüsten sich nich lohnt..

So ein moderner Laptop ist einfach nicht zum Entwickeln geeignet. Die Spiele werden auch immer langweiliger. Außerdem ist die Auswahl an modernen Spielen heute einfach nur noch auf Quantität und billigstes Entertainment begrenzt. There are actually emulators you can get for your consoles and loads of games to play. Like Commodore 64 games, Nintendo, all models, even Atari, Intellivision, and Colecovision. It's great being able to play those on your PC or console of choice.

It's when looking at these you realize how much important it is to have a good tune ingame instead of beeps and bops. Myth had a kickass splash screen tune, but only sound effects ingame (C64). The Last Ninja series was a lot more fun than most games cause they had music all the time.

It's name: "Defender of the Crown." Basically a strategy game: conquer all of Britain by defeating the other lords. The jousting was a sub-game in which you could joust for territories or for honor. More honor to your name meant your battles would go better. You could also raid enemy castles in the middle of the night (sword fight). You could even save a damstrel in distress and if you succeeded you married her and got her protector's territories. Another part was castle siege.

They are very reliable. They are intended to be used on tape drives with excellent, precise speed, this ensures 100% data is written then the tapes need to be stored in rooms with no magnets etc. A big process to store data, but, it's got to be done.

its basically a project that tests what innovative concepts can be applied to a console/computer that is well passed its prime. For what its worth- I very much enjoy classic gaming, and pushing the limits of consoles of yesteryear. Homebrew projects like this are one of the main reasons as to why classic hobby gaming/collecting is still enjoyable today! If you think the project is worth insulting, or isn't "cool" then you just don't "get it". And probably never will. :)

There's one big difference: Today, CPUs are too complex and operating system DLLs are the only way to build. When Apple, Commodore and Atari were building around the 6502, measuring clock speed and eking out every millisecond of performance was possible. Go check out applications made today in DOS using C or Borland's now free compilers (Turbo Pascal, etc.). The thing Steve Wozniak did that Jack Tramiel failed to do was make the C64 easy for the unadventurous. The C64 was no worse to use than others on the market (TI99/4A, among others), and all Commodore machine were years ahead in multimedia, but the disk drive and loading of files just wasn't as simple, reliable or fast as Apple's and was the sole reason Apple won. IBM also won because they were a financial giant and had good marketing, not because they were better.

School only taught me a little bit of C, some SQL and some of that ABOMINATION that is Pascal. At work, I got a full immersion on C, Visual Basic and the language used for their PLCs. I developed a large part of the kernel and the compiler for those PLCs, I made programs for them (compiled with the compiler I made) and I fought against the same limits C64 programmers used to have in the 80s, because those are embedded systems comparable to an 80s computer. AND SCHOOL TAUGHT ME NOTHING OF THAT!

Why can't todays coders do impressive stuff with equipment several orders of magnitude better? The simple answer is, laziness! This is proof that highly disciplined programmers can work miracles with basically NOTHING. A lot of hacky programmers working on 7th gen console titles could learn a lot about streamlining and efficient, bug-free programming from this little masterpiece. Congrats on remaking a classic so well on a technically inferior machine to the one the original demo was made for!

Wow. For sure the most technically impressive demo I've seen in years. One 1MHz Processor handling a demo like this in 64KiB of RAM. If this masterpiece of art is possible on _this_ hardware then it's hard to understand why we need several GiB of Memory, extra graphics memory, multiple CPU cores _and_ tons of graphics processors (112 shader units ect.), each running (much) more than a thousand times faster than the 6510 did, to achieve decent effects nowadays. ;-)

That made me smile inside, having seen the original many times I love the way some people still do this stuff for the fun and challenge of it. Also the way the c64s limitations are shown was well thought out "1, 2, 3, 4.... 1200.0 dots" for example made me chuckle. Easy 5 star rating, loved it.

This is probably our most famous tune, and probably the one most far away from our usual style---which is rock music. This tune is an "off the mill" boy band song about love to our beloved C64. At one point we figured "What c64 tune would be great if interpreted as a boy band song?" The answer was Comic Bakery written by Martin Galway.

If I remember correctly, Martin Galway (Comic Bakery composer) and Johnathan Dunn (Jurassic Park NES composer) were coworkers at Ocean after Ocean acquired Imagine, the studio that ported Comic Bakery over to the C64. Dunn liked the Comic Bakery theme and arranged a version of it for Jurassic Park NES. I thought the same thing when I first heard it.

Back in 1982, running on an 8-bit 6510 processor at 1MHz, on an American made motherboard, this exquisite piece probably took a whole 10K of RAM. Fast forward 26 years, it streams at 64KBps onto my Windows machine and probably sucks a good 2MBs of bandwidth at least. Progress.
