The chorus is very often too loud and at the moment I feel like there is no musical coherence and balance in the opera. maybe the word chaos is probably too strong. I'm saying this only because the day before I have listened to La Boheme and what a work that is, every musical point is just adorable, from the orchestra, the singers and I especially like the choir. La Boheme just makes sense for my ear, and Carmen does not.

I did not see this movie but last night I listened to Abbado's Carmen with Berganza, Domingo, Milnes and Cotrubas. It was my first complete Carmen and I have to say I don't like this opera, at least this performance. The only character I like is Michaela and Cotrubas singing it. Domingo's sound is generally too stringent for me and sometimes he sounds like swallowing the words. I like Milnes more as Rigoletto then Escamillo, and Berganza is OK, elegant and stylish but I felt almost nothing.

Interestingly the fact that the heroine (anti-heroine?) is killed at the end was completely out of character for an opera for the Opera Comique in Paris! The marginal Micaela fits far more neatly into the heroine-type for grande opera (being a virtuous sop and all that) but we hardly see her :) And Don Jose, although tenor is seriously flawed compared to the eversoheroic (but boring?) escamillo. Part of the reason Carmen is so wonderful is that it subverts the genre so :) nietzsche's favourite!

I wish I knew how to transcribe these videos into MPEG or even MPG. I have to software programs VideoPiggy and Free Music Downloader which I think might do the job. Have had time to explore the possibilities with Downloader, But what I have done is record all of my favourites onto cassette tapes and then taken them to be put onto CD. But thats here in Australia where I had it done so now I have over four hours of non stop classical and ragtime on a 4GB CD !!!

Nice to see; nice to hear, but i can't see the actress we see on screen with the voice we hear off stage. i would expect to see placido acting on screen and actually singing his part off screen. i'm just not convinced and for me it spoils the suspension of belief of actually thinking it's drama. overall nice to see; very sexy staging.
