Best, most exciting, most compelling rendition ever. I really mean it. I never liked Joan's or anyone else's rendition. Just always seemed to affected and mechanic and lifeless. Beverly is obviously thrilled as she is waiting for Carlo to show up. Just thinking about him drives her into song, and she sings this aria..."Oh light of this soul of mine". Beverly forever blessed us with this rendition. Matchless. May she rest in peace.

Can you believe that Bing called her "Vulgar"?! I think that was because he just did not like New York accents in the world of opera (and of couse I mean in her speech - not singing). But we must remember that he acted like he should be treated like American royality. And remember his lifestyle was considered "Vulgar" by most others.

Nobody sings it this well. Sills is the master of this aria. She is better than Sutherland, forget Battle or Sumi Jo, more fluid, more ease, more precise, a much more beautiful voice and a far better musician. Her dynamics are perfect.

During spring of this year, starting in March, my voice stunk almost EVERY DAY for no good reason. It's now August, and it's still having a few off days. It's gotten better over the course of the Summer, but it sounded REALLY, REALLY BAD in the Spring. Is it just changing, or did something go terriby, horriby wrong??? And why 35???????????

You're opinion sounds a little bit bitter to me...are you by any chance a soprano or musicologist??!!!! If you are a soprano and have g/a then bloody well sing them! It's a very bitchy and competitive business as you may well be aware. Yes, I agree she doesn't sing what is on the page but it's fucking DONIZETTI...please do your homework about this composer i.e. he wrote his music for singers to show off...

if you think this is the BEST rendition of this aria, then you need to learn a few things: 1, a pretty voice (if you wanna call her immature sounding voice pretty, yeah she was popular then, but this is by all means not a pretty voice, and donizetti would shoot her) doesn't mean good artistry, 2, the song is beautiful the original way, maybe with a cadenza here and there, but you don't hear hardly anything of the original here, and 3, in the beginning she barely excecutes the basic line. -999/10

this performance is actually not good at all, because all she's doing is singing (squeaking in my opinion) g's and a's and cutting out the parts that are too hard for her. i mean, she takes out the double arpeggio jump already written in the music for something else, there's a cadenza at each pause that has no tonality or sense, and just to backhandedly prove her lack of tonality she skips the chromatic section. fireworks are fun, btu opera is art. this isn't art, this is a squeaking mouse.

ok, what you all need to realize is something maria callas once said during her juilliard master classes to a student singing una voce poco fa, that (since there are so many cadenzs possible in that song) rossini himself heard a singer do a bunch of them one time and said "that was beautiful, um, what was it you were singing?" too many cadenzas and extra notes wreck the original intents of a song. take this for example: the original vocal line is almost completely gone.

I suppose it all goes back to Helen of Troy, or some other babe...but it always surprises me how these little wars break out over the "opera babes" I hope Foly reads this through before crucifying me again as was done on one of La Netrebko's pages...but...comparing this babe (with a gorgeous voice) to the other babe (with a gorgeous voice) in anything other than looks is not very sound an argument. A very beautiful voice! One of the better coloratura voices of today. She doesn't sound very comfortable or strong at the top and bottom of her voice though, but her coloratura and middle voice sounds really great. Her technique seems much healthier than Netrebko's as well, with correct placement of the tongue and better jaw positions.

I fail to see the benefit of these comparisons. This singer surely can`t hold a candle to big voiced Joan Sutherland, BUT her fioriture are much, much better than those of opera`s hysterical pop diva Netrebko. And she is at least as beautiful to look at. Brava!

Sutherland wasn't so lyric and Freni wasn't so dramatic. Moreover, Devia is a lyrycal soprano, as is Netrebko. Just because they have some consistency in their voice, that doesn't make them dramatic. Dimitrova or Guleghina for example are dramatic. At least that's how I see it.

Sutherland's voice was far bigger than Freni's, Callas' and Devia's. She was a dramatic. I would believe Gruberova's voice is bigger than Netrebko's as well - Anna is basically a pure lyric.

Hmmmm, reminds me of Mady Mesple and a little Anna Moffo if anything! Not as lyrical as Sumi Jo or Beverly Sills. Certainly not a Netrebko by voice (maybe looks!), not as full a voice as Dessay, and certainly not a dramatic coloratura as Sutherland or Gruberova. I concur with Verdiano BR: a lyric leggero. I look forward to her Desdemona in Pesaro :)

Peretyatko cannot be compared to Netrebko because she's a lyric soprano (Gruberorava, Dessay, Sutherland etc.). La Netrebko is dramatic soprano with a large voice (Callas, Freni, Devia etc.). Very beautiful tone.

Peretyatko cannot be compared to Netrebko, they're completely different. While Netrebko is more of a full lyric soprano, Peretyatko sounds definitely like a lyric leggero. They can't sing the same repertoire. With that bright and pure coloratura voice, I see Peretyatko as a wonderful Gilda, Lakmé or Norina, but not Mimì or Manon, like Netrebko. ;-)

I don't know if it was her fault or the conductor's, but it was too straightforward and unsensitive, esp. in the recitative. I'm afraid she still has to develop her musicality and dramatic. In Sutherland's version, it's clear that she used the dynamics and colours to the best dramatic effect and would shape each vocal line, giving them dramatic meaning. She must learn this very important Bel Canto issue, but her voice is really very beautiful and well trained. ;-)

Her career began when she was a child, and she was a pro until the end. I saw her onstage in all her major roles, many concerts, and recitals. She always gave 100% and more. She was and remains unique in the annals of opera. This performance is Sills at the end of her career. And I say, brava!

Oh I don't think her voice is a mess at all. Like you said, she is still light and fast and maintaines her coloratura sound. She, of course, does not sound the way she did in her earlier years, but I think her voice aged gracefully. My only complaint is her jaw wobble. Other than that she always had great technique.

What's really quite amazing is her demeanor. She has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone. They wanted her to sing, so she's going to sing for them. It doesn't matter how she does. She knows they'll love her. There's this confidence that transcends that really delicious and satisfying wobble she does in her high notes. Whenever she works her way up to that underpitchness, I just smile and love it. She doesn't have to try anymore. She nailed those notes years ago.

I don't know what some of you people are talking about. She sounds terrific, and I am a professional soprano and know bad singing when I hear it. Sills sounds great in this clip. Might not be as good as on the Ed Sullivan Show but this is still wonderful singing. Sheesh you people are critical!!

Thanks for your reply! Frankly speaking, her singing is not beautiful in this performance. However, if I love a opera singer simply because of his or her beautiful voice, there is no old or mature one that I admire in my mind. I think that we need to learn from great singers their efforts and experiences as well as their gorgeous voices. I can't find her beautiful voice in this performance, but I can find her past glory and her operatic experiences. I love her!

I remember her at a rehearsal in Hollywood calif. in 1972 bouncing happily like this on her feet and smiling just like this and heard her baby doe in 1969 terrific and later I Puritani, never forget it with big voiced tenor E. Mauro, she hit every high note with him and could not be drowned out even with his big voice, her acting and diction was wonderful and she had tons of emotion. Thanks for posting this. I adore Beverly and miss her tremendously. I was one of the fortunate ones to have heard her sing this piece in concert live. Happy, sad, serious -- she never failed to take me on whatever musical journey she was on. The best of the best.

I am very aware of the tessitura of the different voices. That is why I totally disagree on comparing what note would be the equivalent of some note in another voice... or what is the equivalent in difficulty... It is absurd. Good for you if you can trill. Every voice should, anyway. So I don't think it is a big deal if a bass trills better than a light soprano... Even Wagner parts like Sachs or Brühnhilde have to trill. And I do think that this soprano, whom I don't know personally, can trill.

She has a lovely voice, although I think it's occasionally a bit too dramatic for this aria. But her high notes and agility are wonderful. The only thing that I would say is that her trill was horrible...I'm a baritone and can sing a better trill than this.

I like this. It seems to be excessively ornamented, and I still like it. Again, a 1:44 the note seems to be slightly sharp (not flat? she's weird), but it doesen't sound bad. There are a few more notes that I think are not perfectly in tune, but she does have an amazing way of reaching them that sounds lovely, not like screaming at all.

Joan is perfect. I love Margreta Elkins a lot. She is a very fine singer. Her performance with Joan in Norma in 1979 in Sydney was impressive. And one interesting point, Joan is a tall girl and Elkins is almost as tall as Joan. They make a perfect duo on the stage.

A bit of heaven! I knew that Joan sang this duet in recitals with Tourangeau, but never knew this clip existed. The best singing I've heard from Elkins, so refined and subtle, and Joan sounds glorious, of course.Thank you so much for this beautiful clip. Thanks you for posting this. Both voices are so fresh, so lovely. I love the fact that Sutherland's technique is clear to see: the forming of the lips, the elongated neck, the way her torso makes her bounce up when she needs the breath support. Fantastic. Again, thank you.
