I remember that astounding performance stopping me in my tracks, as if composed for her alone; an early recording by her if I remember correctly, letting me know why many considered Sutherland's greatness unparalleled.

At least Sutherland can't be criticized for her diction here! I recall first hearing this piece on WQXR, where it was reviewed, on a show called "The Listening Room" with Martin Bookspan, Irving Kolodin, and Edward Downes. At the time, not many sopranos sang it, certainly not the way Sutherland does.

Really, this is a very beautiful piece. And it is so unknown even among musicians and - believe it or not - among sopranos!!! Netrebko is so beautiful and a good singer, but listen to Dame Joan Sutherland, and you will hear, how the music should be. Glière is a high romantic composer, and nothing else!

Pienso que Netrebko allí está a la voz muy blanca, sin mucho color o imaginación. Por supuesto, este concerto es muy difícil, y pienso que sobrevive cualquiera al cantante que persigan él debe ser felicitado. De mi opinión, la versión de Joan Sutherland es la más impresionante.

Don't just repeat what you've heard; there are plenty of coloratura roles. She has none of the hallmarks of a coloratura, though: no facility, no clarity, and no resonance above the staff. Push, push, push does not make a coloratura any more than driving a rusty tank through Monaco makes Formula-1.

She has a great coloratura voice. I would understand her desire to sing soprano repertoire, because if she can sing higher notes, she can still sing a little lower. I've heard that coloraturas don't have a lot of roles, at least heard them complaning about it.

Dònde està la coloratura? No me gusta Netrebko. Es muy guapa y tiene unos buenos agudos. La he visto en directo dos veces. Un concierto hace 5años y me sorprendiò, y una òpera este año donde me confirmò que es una voz "monocorde" y un gran producto marketing.

The singing is absolutely breathtaking, especially when you consider this is live. Yes it is in Italian, but that was the tradition in Italy at that time. But what defiance in the voice. For once the aria is not just a coloratura display, but begins to make dramatic sense.

Why would Maria Callas just hit a F once. Most sopranos who have an extension to the F would use it frequently. And opera critics always talked about her high E's and her E flats. Then why did any critics compliment or describe her high F. And remember that live recording was released years later.

Can you tell me how in a time were there was no digital tecnollogy available, why is the F the only off pitch note? How come the notes prior to the f and the notes after the f are not of pitch? Why just the F?

you are right! every one says that that f is an e ofpitch but to me that is so crazy because out of all that recording the only note out of pitch is the F. Funny considering that back then they didn't hve the digital tec to do some thing like that. If tha f had really been of pitch like many people say then the notes before and after the f would have to been recorded also out of pitch but no one has ever said that only with the F.

My thing is this 'DrGarri'.. its amazing how perfect either 'fools' or 'cultured' people dare to comment on the Artistry of Callas. Posing & sometimes presenting their credentials to try & tell her even in death how to sing. It doesnt matter who you are or how studious you are in the voice or singing or screaming etc. There was no one competent in history, no one competent today, & no one in the future who will ever have the luck of dictating on the immortal singing of this woman. Guys, I just listened to Gruberova do this song. There was no noticeable difference in keys. Certainly a half step would have caused some dissonance when listening to both at the same time in perfect time. Great performance by both, none the less.

Im sorry...but one doesnt simply pick and choose a key to sing a given aria. One sings it it in the key the composer intended. Art song...YES. Opera..NO. There are exceptions based on tradition. Lucia's mad scene...written in F, is traditionally done in Eb. The same is true for Una voce poco fa. This is not the case with Zerbinetta's aria. Dame Joan never performed Queen of the night on stage. Why? She couldn't sing the 2 arias in the key written by Mozart.

You know i would love to hear to sing this extremely hard aria in the original key! The key has nothing to do with anything. She still executed this song beautifully and the fact that you are criticising her over a whole step is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. No matter how you try to critique her, she still has one of the most beautiful voices in opera and you should respect her for her dedication to the music!

Strauss originally wrote this piece a whole step HIGHER than in his final version...Which is the key used to this day. Unfortunately Miss Battle had to transpose it down ANOTHER whole step so she could sing it....Well sort of. I have tried SO HARD to like her...but this is another example of her shortcomings....If you cant sing such a famously difficult aria in the correct key...YOU SHOULD NOT SING THE ROLE!!!

I recently ordered a CD of the live performance from London that gave Battle the Lawrence Olivier Award in 1985. She did much better than here, particularly on the staccati part. In 1985, the high E was in stacatto like it it written, amazing!

Have you heard Reri Grist's version...for me that is the definitive. Nonetheless all of these women are fantastic singers who have made immeasureable contributions to the art form and brought joy and excitement to opera lovers for decades.

hehe! I love debating about these things cause its not like these A list singers give a crap what we think anyway they are too busy out there performing to care! but yeah I do appreciate SCREAMernova's high note's at times however I think Battle's lyricism and obvious character development shine through any lapses in technique. Just my lil opinion

I enjoyed this, because I love this aria and because I am not yet so much of a snob that a less than "perfect" (in one's own mind) performance "horrifies" me and causes me to insult the talents of world-class singers. However, I hardly think that Battle is in the same league as Dessay or Gruberova with regards to this aria.

that's an opinion and i'm glad you have it, BUT: gruberova needs to try and be smart about when to give this role up (cause she kinda did it in 2002 and it was just squeaks and yells), and anyone can see that at times her acting is fake a mugged, so her embodiment isn't THAT great. and gruberova's breathing problems in this character seemed to have doubled or tripled as she got older... but her technical perfection note and execution wise are truly astonishing. and yes, no no for battle.

Sorry, but nobody beats Edita Gruberova on this, the most difficult coloratura aria (or in this role, for that matter) for technical perfection, total embodiment of the character and utter ease of production. I really love Battle's voice on a lot of her Baroque repertoire, but she was very poorly advised in taking on this role. Edita Gruberova remains THE Zerbinetta to beat.
