That's actually a myth. Darwin never recanted his beliefs in the theory of Evolution, mostly because he felt they were (and they are) in line with the Christian faith. It was actually a more modern movement (Think the Scopes Trial in the 1930s) that decided the Theory should prove the non-existence of God.
