Hallo, thank you or posting this Hoffmann video. From which theatre is the production? I am a Hoffmann fan and have seen nine European Hoffmann productions this year. The best was in a provincial thatre in Regensburg/Bavaria. (first night Nov 2) I agree with rakewell2: The lady in fur seems to be Stella, who in many interpretations appears in a silent role. Cheers to all Hoffmann fans.

This must be one of Dessay's best sung Olympias, but I hate the production, at least the part shown here. Turning Olympia into a living beautiful girl and have her die at the end of the act, it takes all the comical aspects off. But yes, the Antonia act does seem to be better, and I think that lady in fur looks cool (is that the Muse?)

Damn. I totally wish I was a coloratura, but I'm pretty sure I'm a spinto. Dessay is amazing. I LOVE her voice, and she's a fabulous actor as well. And I think the interpretation is really interesting.

Although everyone seems to hate this particular production of the opera, I think it's the best performance of the doll aria that Natalie Dessay's ever done. I actually like it slowed down like this. Her voice is absolutely beautiful.

Natalie Dessay is an amazing Artist with a capital "A"!!! (as regards the staging, I have to say that the idea doesn't seem really original, as "Les contes d' Hoffmann" placed in a mental hospital were presented in Folkoperan in Stockholm almost 20 years ago; I can't recall the name of the director though)

Interesante... Me recuerda el teatro de Peter Weiss "Marat-Sade" (llevada al cine por Brooks) que se desarrollaba en el manicomio de Charenton durante la revolución francesa. Incidentalmente se puede ver en youtube una versión similar de esta obra cantada por Christiane Boesinger en: v=q7mLAtBEea4&feature=related que también es muy interesante. No se enojen los puristas, en la variación está la base del futuro. Natalie como siempre estupenda!

I agree with you to some extent. This aria is known as THE DOLL ARIA and their rendition is a little confusing. She sings this flawlessly and effortlessly true enough, but the acting in this leaves the viewer with a lot of questions. But she is still phenomenal. Where the crazy house comes in is a mystery!

Im completely sure. There are a lot of Olympia made by Dessay. It depends on the production. And she gave different aspects on each one. If you want a more innocent Olympia you should look up for another production. Anyway her Olympias are unique.

Wooble? After singing this piece so well, including the final high C#, all you hear is a wobble? How petty to ignore all the things she did well....especially at age 61. No voice, even young ones are perfect. Tebaldi had effortful high C's, but sang so beautifully it didn't matter. Callas was a genius in many ways, despite an intractable and disobedient voice. Caruso never really had a high C. Try listening past small imperfections..there is real beauty you are missing.

Was this taped in 1987?!! I can't believe it! Sutherland's voice is incredibly youthful for her age. The wobble in her middle isn't even very noticeable. Besides, her high notes and her phrasing remain supreme. If that date is true, I have to admire this great interpretation even more, because Sutherland's Antonia here is really amazing, capturing all the innocence and delicacy of the role without making it sound too "bland". This is great! ;-)

Oh it's fantastic! I saw her do this at the Met in the 80's in a very lavish production, and it's still one of the very best things I ever saw on that stage. To sing at such a high level and perform such mechanical moves at the same is a real feat. Brava!

It has ALWAYS been the custom to add things, to make it unique for each singer. Especially the second time around. Ruth was one of the great true Bel canto singers. She and Kraus together were wonderful. She knew her voice type and stuck with it. No getting her to take on too heavy a role. And, yes she did study those mechanical dolls. If you notice there is not a phrase without some small movement, just as would be the case if she were a wind up singing doll!

As for her voice, no heaviness there at all. She has a lovely, bright coloratura voice and that squeak was obviously intentional considering Olympia is a mechanical doll. This piece is perfect for her voice.

Wow! Incredible performance. Not only does she sing it well, but she's obviously done her homework on the behaviour of the old mechanical dolls. Not only can this woman sing, she can act. Well, actually, the note is an Eb, not a D. But the person who called it a squeak is not far wrong. It did not resonate in her voice. But she makes up for it with her extra, slow triplet, that awesome huge Eb-F-Eb one, that begins the series of triplets, right near the end.

ben detto..il ruolo di Olympia è famoso per le sue colorature e fioriture...e poi è un ruolo dove "il recitare" è un elemento fondamentale,per rendere al meglio l'effetto di una bambola umanizzata..e qui mi sembra che ci sia tutto ciò che deve esserci.Voce rotonda(confermo,più della Dessay),acuti brillanti e recitazione perfetta..da notare come a metà dell'aria scattino subito gli applausi,e il pubblico parigino certo non è sempre incline ad applaudire prima della fine di un'aria.Desirèe THEBEST

She sang it great. Don't mistake that. Ew to her eyelashes and makeup though. Honestly, it makes her look like Kim, from Miss Saigon. And I do NOT like the pianist. He moves far too much. His only role is to play the piano and then wind her up. It's hard to explain, but there's certain things he does (like bob his head to her singing) that are poor habits.

My point was that this aria was interpolated into this opera. Toscanini was famous for striping singer's excrudescences from the composer's original intentions. That doesn't apply here. Scintille Diamante was never in Offenbach's original composition. There is a baritone version and a bass-baritone version. Faithfulness to the composer's intentions is not an isssue here. BTW I only heard Van Dam live once. He sang Angelotti in Tosca. I don't remember anything about his performance.

The issue is why do they sing it in D. Offenbach died before the premiere. This aria was added by an impresario to fill out the score. It's a performance tradition. The other four villains are all lower. If you want for drammatic purposes to have one singer do all four then you take "Scintille" down to D. Most productions do that today. Some commenters however miss the very high brilliant G# version that was the older performance tradition.

Must I continue forever to apologize for saying that it was an A not a G#? I said it was too high for Van Dam, Morris or Ramey in a live performance. I also said the G# was done by Milnes so it shouldn't surprise anyone that Warren also sang that way. Did Warren ever sing all four villians? No. Did Warren ever sing Hoffman on stage at all? Not at the Met and not at San Francisco. What Warren did in concert is hardly relevant here. Please post you version with the high B.

Not a really a fair criticism. When this opera is done today its usually done by one bass-baritone. In the old days there were always four separate villians with a high baritone taking this aria (added from "L'Etoile du Nord"). Sherill Milnes made a feast of the high A at the end of "Scintille" but he never sang the other three much lower parts.

don't know as the others, but I always felt that something is not so simple as it seems in ofenbach's barcarole. it has always seemed to me a bit more tragic and a bit more profound than it is used to be put on the stage. in this context I found this performance (even a part of it) concordant with my feelings to offenbach's perusal of the 'tales'. i would have gladly seen it in a full version, to understand the very idea of the director. may be he understood the genius of maestro offenbach.

The 1988 Hoffmann from the Met was never put on a commercial tape, although there was a general idea that it had been and then withdrawn. I had all the Opera News Magazines from that time and after, and never saw an ad for that Hoffmann. I've waited for it to be put on DVD, but so far Mr. Gelb, despite his promise to give us the DVDs of the operas he had allowed to be seen in theaters has not yet come through with them.

yes it is 1982 Italy and I don't think it is available nor is his great one with James Morris, bass from the met on PBS in 1988 both where terrific and he was fantastic in the 1982 with Malfitano but the Italian staging was not as good as the metropolitan one in 88 with Morris and Tryaonos and Gwendlyn bradley, I will post tomorrow the 82 cast but will be hard to get, I do have it in poor video but fine sound and I love it, Check Premiere opera list he may have it he was fantastic with her

You need to see and hear his early version from 82' in Italy with Malfitano, if you prefer a faster more traditional tempo, his voice was more lyric then and it was in wonderful sound. Really amazing singing, Hard to get it now, also he did a terrific Romeo in Paris the same year, yes also on VHS and had by many. Hard to get now but worth it. The Met Hoffman he did on PBS in 88 is a favorite of mine for acting and singing but hard to find.

I saw Domingo do it here in the 80's then Shicoff in 88' at the met and in this role Neil was better. That 88' performance on (PBS) TV is not available but was better then this, production /was stunning with Morris, and the late Tryanos. Tucker did a fine one in 55' from the met with peters, Singher and Amara, fantastic high notes from RT but for acting and singing Neil is great in this role. Catch the 1988 met one or the recording he did, all the cuts are out!

Dear smnole! I liked your comment. This opera has been my favourite for over 50 years, for the same reason. If Placido is the best Hoffmann ever is a matter of opinion. He is certainly one of the best. Try Neil Shicoff in the Bastille production, available on DVD.

Wonderful rendition. Although the best interpretation of this aria that I've seen is Rolando Villazon's from the recent 2006 Parisian production. His intrepretation was astounding to say the least. But Placido's is right up there and in some ways is more human and lyrical than Rolando's. Both are phenomenal and this aria demonstrates it for Placido.
