I think it is fair to say that minorities are still woefully underrepresented in U.S. politics. But to say the U.S. is terribly behind Europe in this regard ensures that no one will take you seriously. C'mon, dude, we all have work to do.

Last time I checked, law passing for most of the Clinton administration (from '94 to 2000) was the purview of a Republican majority in the Senate and the House. In any case, it was certainly not the government "forcing" financial institutions to lend to high-risk people that got us in this mess. It has been brewing in the mortgage lending industry ever since the late 70s, early 80s.

considering how fucked up our economy is, no. but obama is revolutionary nevertheless. he is respected not simply for his political ambitions, but the way he mobilized his campaign. he forever changed the way people (esp. minorities and youths) think about politics. regardless of what you think of him, you have to give him credit for being a historical leader on so many levels.

And this is how it all started... Way to go, Mr. President! 4 more years!
By: TRBlom. on 21 Nov 08, 15:55:06
Of course I understand that you need to be patriotic, and my comment was purposefully a bit provoking. But it was actually intended to bring up a slightly different discussion. This man is to represent a country, currently highly impopular over here, because it seems to represent itself so superior (which is of course a fallacy). It is a shame though that politicians cannot 'show the impopular mirror'.
By: XdaymanX. on 21 Nov 08, 15:38:23
TRBlom-Maybe he should have said that the U.S. is a dump and its people are the scum of the earth!?! What exactly do you expect him to say? Also, I'm sure that the Netherlands and other countries in Europe have had plenty of Heads of State that are black with Muslim names!!
By: JwebGuru. on 21 Nov 08, 15:11:32
You don't get elected to high office in the US by talking about how far behind the US is, no matter what you believe. Criticism of the country, if you dare deliver any, must always be "constructive" and must be aimed at individuals (Bush) and their policies rather than the nation as a whole. Most countries work this way to some extent, but few take jingoism to the extremes the US does--Obama was accused of being "unpatriotic" for not wearing a flag pin and agreeing to meet with enemy leaders.
By: TRBlom. on 21 Nov 08, 14:30:56
A man who, in this speech, said that in no other nation [than America], his story was even possible... A man who, apparently, regards the USA and its people superior to other nations and peoples. Or am I missing something here?
By: rasavirke. on 21 Nov 08, 08:07:00
Appology accepted :)

I apologize, I meant to write "England" and failed. Forgive me, please!
By: FunBoy15. on 20 Nov 08, 19:50:24
dude. the usa has had many black governers, senators, reps, congressmen etc for around 30-40 years - before any country in europe probably had any at all and mroe than any country in europe has had up to this point. i hate this european bigotism. and i'm british let me tell you, we are elitest to the extreme, thinking we're all enlighted
By: Javascap. on 20 Nov 08, 19:25:10
Dear world, We the people of the United States have chosen this man as our next president, and have taken it upon ourselves to hope this man leads us to change the mistakes of our ways over the last eight years. In short, we are glad to rejoin you in the REAL world. Warm regards, The United States of America.

Countries like EUROPEANS... go back to geography class... there is no country like europe, its a continent! And by the way, rasism in Europe is even worse, it is just a tabu here to talk about it. At least in USA the issues are addressed publicly.
By: JwebGuru. on 20 Nov 08, 09:12:08
That's simply not true. Europe is so homogenized that racism is rarely even a potential issue, but there is a heavy class-based stratification, especially in countries like European and France which have relatively high minority populations, which effectively cuts black people (for example) from being elected to major positions of power. Europe is ahead of America in a lot of ways, but when it comes to electing minorities you are just as backwards as we are (or were, anyway).
By: JwebGuru. on 20 Nov 08, 09:07:50
Democrats accused more than half of the country of being unable to think for itself for years. Interesting to see how the tables have turned now that the Republicans have lost the election. Here's a fact for you: most people can think for themselves. It's only a tiny minority that spews talking points mindlessly. That said, I am tempted to put you into the "spewing mindless talking points" camp given that that's exactly what you're doing.
By: tocklu. on 20 Nov 08, 08:53:05
This country is now divided into two camps. Those who can still think for themselves, and those who are mesmerized by the false messiah and his empty platitudes.
By: jpiccion. on 20 Nov 08, 08:20:23
He could have ran back then with a great speech like this!

By: oranjuh. on 20 Nov 08, 00:27:02
LOL? Ayaan Hirsi Ali? Formal member of parlement and very influential Dutch politician. As I said "friend", America is terrible behind on Europe. Obama came 8 years too late.
By: FunBoy15. on 19 Nov 08, 20:08:43
please friend, show me a prominant black politician in europe. take france, massive african population, but veyr small respresentation. now this I think is probably as much because of the attitude of many africans in europe but I think other things get in the way.

lol, he only said that because that's what you WANT to hear. As if a black person couldn't make a career in Europe. Did you know Amsterdam (Holland) as a jewish mayer? Did you know persons of Turkish background are minister here in the cabinet? Did you know we almost had a HOMOSEXUAL as prime-minister 5 years ago? What happend in America now, already happend here years ago, lol. But not surprisingly though, American arrogance knows no limit, as well as bragging.
