Once Was Not is my favorite Cryptopsy album. I'm sure the Death Metal purists will disagree, though. I like to compare this album to Mayhem's Grand Declaration of War, as in it's a far more challenging listen than the bands previous offerings, but it's ultimately more substantial if you look at it in a broader musical sense. The Unspoken King is garbage, though.

My only issue with Matt was that he tried too hard, not that he's lacking. Lord Worm knew when to back off and let the music play, and where to go into a shreak. My issues are more with the fact that Alex Auburn was a freeloader and proved his inability to compose on The Unspoken King.

Well, in short, Jon Levasseur was the main songwriter, and him and Flo Mounier used to arrange the albums together, but Jon Levasseur wrote this album, then left before it was recorded, so my guess is that this is the only song on the album written by the current guitarist, Alex Auburn. There's a stark difference between this song and the rest of the album, Once Was Not.

Basically,triggers are good for fast double bassing,but anyone could get triggers on their bass pedals and be double bassing...it takes away the effort that really good drummers put forth,that's why it bothers me. Not saying Flo isn't good,he's the drummer behind one of the best bands ever (until they got rid of Lord Worm that is.) but I really don't think he needs the triggers to sound as amazing as he does.

The reason they make him ''sound better'' is because he DOESN'T have to play harder with them. With triggers you don't have to stomp on the bass pedal hard at all and it will still make a full velocity kick...that is bull and shows a sign of weakness,that's why I don't like them. That didn't really matter when the singer was using a completely indeciphrable death grunt, but DiSalvo's hardcore style really clashes with Lord Worm's lyrics. I mean, I ultimately prefer Lord Worm, but DiSalvo is quality. Are you really going to try and say Cold Hate, Warm Blood is not a stone cold classic? GTFO

So using triggers is enough to say they suck now? All the triggers do is substitute the actual sound of the bass drum for an electronic sounding bass drum. There is nothing wrong with that. Hmm, I'm sure Cryptopsy have featured the use of keyboards/piano, samples, and triggered kickdrums etc on pretty much every release. As for the emocore vocals? Sure some of the singing is lame, but that new guy is a damn articulate vocalist. Certainly a lot more articulate than Lord Worm ever was.

I`dont really like the early Cryptopsy, especially becouse of Lord Worm, bad growler at all. The only reason was Flo, who was always like "you wanna hear the fastest death metal drumer, check this out...". Now i heard some new stuff from "unspoken King" and for the first time i was impressed, and not only of Flo. I wouldn't go so far as to say beat, but I do think it deserved more credit than it got. Once Was Not didn't receive nearly enough praise and was still a very good work in spite of Jon's absence (I think he did some writing on it - I know he did Luminum). Everyone needs to lay off "The Pestilence that Walketh in Darkness", etc and enjoy the album for what it was - a great piece. Oh, and I wholeheartedly agree on the latter part. I wouldn't remember anything off "..And Then You'll Beg" otherwise.

Still, Once Was Not turned out pretty decent. to be honest I think Flo just got too into himself and jumped on the hardcore bandwagon because he knew it was popular. Hell, 1/2 the crew on The Unspoken King hadn't even been with em for 3 years, and Matt was FROM a metalcore band. As for Worm... he wouldn't be caught DEAD sounding like a castrated 12-year-old on helium whining about how "you maaade a MISTAAAKE!"
