Thousands of American's with developmental and intellectual disabilities are waiting for help. In Colorado, alone, there are more than 12,000 children and adults waiting for the most basic of assistance and therapies. Disability is a natural part of life and it is not partisan in how it impacts a family. Thanks for recognizing this issue. We can only hope that regardless of who is elected these issues won't be forgotten.

John McCain doesn't seem to understand that Sarah Palin's grand-daughter has Down Syndrome, not Autism. He says twice that she knows more about "autism" than anyone else he knows, which is just ridiculous and confused. Both conditions are important to research, of course, it would just be nice if McCain knew the difference. I have a daughter with Downs and I'm Obama all the way. Cheers.

Interesting exchange between "funny1outta2" and "evegiselle." It wouldn't make a difference if my child were Deaf or hearing, since I know ASL. I do know that Deaf parents tend to hope that their children are born Deaf, and that makes perfect sense to me. True, being Deaf can be a challenge, but it depends on your attitude toward your hearing loss, as Marlee Matlin points out in this video. I GREATLY respect & admire Deaf people who take pride in their language, culture and identity.

i love sing language too, i study it,n I can't believe what you say,YOU WISH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE DEAF!, Do you know any deaf person? do you know how difficult are some things for them, because i do, and i would never wish that to anybody, (although the deaf people i know is very clever). if you love sing language sooo much, why don't you study it and work with deaf children. I did that. I think everybody should know sing language, because it's really unfair for deaf people not being understood.

She has been a hero of mine for many years, not because she was deaf but because she was who she was, & didn't stop or be defined. Now that I am deaf I appreciate her work even more, she has really given so many people a better understanding of what is possible, and that she is no more or less important because she is deaf, she is a very talented woman who has earned all the respect she is given, while opening doors for others, by example. I'm more open w/my hearing loss thanks to her. Thanks

i live in a relatively small town (23,000 people) and we happen to have a home depot. our home depot has 23 handicapped spaces. TWENTY THREE!! how many handicapped people are going to be buying home improvement supplies -- at the same time -- in our small town??? honestly, i think the amount of spaces should be left to the companies, because 23 is a rediculous amount of empty spaces. home improvemnet supplies are heavy, so those who are working on their home should have the right of way

I used to work for people with disabilities, and am disabled myself. This piece addresses the Americans with Disabilities Act which does not cover money provided by the government for people with disabilities to subsist off for one reason or another. It only covers things that the government -demands- the businesses and public places do to accomidate people with disabilities.

I'm a caregiver to a young man that is blind and intellectualy disabled. He's frustrated when he tries to pay for things. I know there are techniques and equipment made to help him when he pays for things, but he can't remember how to do the techniques he has learned and the equipment is costly for him. I have a question for the libertarians- If the government should be hands off where would all the mentally disabled live? I'm glad the government created boarding care facilities to help them.

Apparently, a federal appeals court in May 2008 ruled that the United States discriminates against blind people by printing paper money that makes it impossible for them to distinguish among the bills' varying values, and they have also unveiled a coin with readable braille. So many of these comments appear to be written by the blissfully ignorant, those who believe they will always have the fully functional body and mind they now have, people who have never spent time strapped in a wheelchair, confined to a bed, unable to access a telephone or emergency call button much less a computer. Because we don't see them, we like to think there just aren't that many people with disabilities, but the reason we don't see them is because they are confined to their homes.

I'm a firefighter and we can not improve or build new fire stations without putting in ADA approved kitchens and bathrooms. Sounds nice but not too many firefighters on duty are disabled and the public is not allowed into our facilities. We're not the park district, it's our home at work.

I always wondered why there's so much fucking brail everywhere. Do they really think a blind person will drive up to an ATM? And I've seen plenty of round doorknobs inside public buildings. Other than that, I don't know which side of the issue to side with. Maybe it just needs reform more than repeal. I gurantee you though, the crippled would get NONE of those close parking spaces that would have been reserved for them. How many people do you know who actually WANT to walk FARTHER?

To reduce the symptoms of abnormal brain functions, all one needs is intensive exercise for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week, because it is an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, anti-seizure (for temporal lobes) and a stimulant for the frontal lobes (which regulates attention). You'll see changes in your behavior and functioning from 2 weeks or to a month. Nevertheless it is a slow process, and I know that most people can;t mange time for it. Though, medication is chill too.

you're absolutely right, it is a pain to deal with. just stick by your friends, chances are they are probably going through a similar situation, or at least have been in the past. but i love that you are comfortable saying that you have a learning disability. that's a great sign of starting to get into the right frame of mind. just stay positive.
