man, ur a fucking dumbass, this really happened. The frequency of the surface waves created by the win made something called constructive intereference, in which the waves amplify each other, making the bridge sway that much. This is why bridges are now aerodynamically designed to prevent this. Next time, do some research, don't just say dumb shit like that when you don't know what you are talking about.

The flight had more than 130 passengers on board when it was pummelled by crosswinds when trying to touch down at Hamburg's Fuhlsbuettel airport. The pilot scraped the Airbus A320's wing on the runway but averted disaster by aborting the landing and taking off again.

Hello, just to clarify. My name is flight lieutenant Jack Myhill, I was present in this flight (although was in transit purely as a jump-seat guest of Lufthansa) I had the fortune of being in the cockpit during the aborted landing. To clarify, No the winds were not that strong. ATC indicated winds of around 70knots with high cross winds reported from the BA flight who were just ahead of ourselves. The crosswinds were stronger than expected. We were able to make a safe landing 2nd time around

I'm a retired controller, & you misunderstand what controllers do, at least in the US. We separate airplanes, and unless the Airport Manager closes the runway or declares the airport unsafe, we cannot deny landing clearance because of conditions. (Imagine the liability if we said no, go somewhere else, and then they crashed) The pilot has authority over the aircraft, we don't. And the control tower is normally evacuated when the wind exceeds 65 mph, so if the wind was 150, the tower was empty.

Perhaps they should have waited & been reassigned a runway with less cross-winds - I recall watching pilots training in cross-winds, and it just looked totally nuts to me to even try it! Maybe the wind gusts were high, but sustained 150 mph winds? sounds unrealistic.

This is a video footage from the fireworks disaster at Enschede, The Netherlands on 13th of may 2000.
23 people were killed and 950 people were injured.
1250 people got homeless. Their homes where totally destroyed by the final blast.
