State's rights is what got the poor white man to take up arms to defend a rich plantation owner's right to own labor, which in effect drove down the wages of free labor. The average white person in the South got little from slavery but lower wages and poor standard of living. I don't think it was so much about slavery as states rights. So i guess i disagree with him. Not that slavery didn't play apart in it..but border states like West Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland still had slavery through out and for a brief while after the civil war. Good song though..i like it.

Flag flew over slavery a full 70 years before the Confederate States of America came into existence. The Confederate Flag never flew over the Ships that brought the slaves over here. Its not what is a Dixie but rather where is Dixie. Which is an area of the southeast United Stats south of the Mason-Dixon Line that divided the British colonies from the newly formed American colonies. The area south of the Mason-Dixon line became known as Dixie Land which among other things is also known for its own distinct style of music. The Mason-Dixon line dived Pennsylvania from Maryland and Washington Dc is just south of the Mason-Dixon line. Good question.

It´s not my intention to offend the black pioneers of Jazz but I´l like to honour Nick LaRocca and his great performance. He´s not yet accepted as the actual inventor of Jazz but one day this will happen.

There's quite a lot of evidence. Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Pops Foster and several other dixieland musicians have said that jazz that sounded just like this was around long before the ODJB was even started. These guys are very important to the history of jazz, but they did not create it.

You´re right if you say that Buddy Bolden played every kind of music, such as marching music, ragtime, waltzes and polkas. But there´s no evidence and no proof that he played jazz in deed. That´s the problem and that´s why you can´t mention him as a jazz pioneer. There´s really no evidence for any kind of jazz or jazz related music before february 1917 when the first jazz record was released by the ODJB.

Charles "Buddy" Bolden was born September 6, 1877 in New Orleans. His band was active from 1900 to around 1907. No recordings exist, but his playing inspired Joe "King" Oliver, Freddie Keppard and Bunk Johnson and he was said to be an incredible cornetist. He and his band played at dance halls and funerals and played everything from ragtime and blues to polkas and waltzes. His band was one of, if not the, first groups to play what is now known as jazz.

Jazz has no single inventor. It is, as Ken Burns called it, a "gumbo." So many people contributed to the style that there is no way to know what one person started it. The ODJB were just as important as Buddy Bolden and Louis Armstrong IMO.

The ODJB according to LOUIS ARMSTRONG in his autobiography...was formed in 1909 and they were called the Old Dixieland Jass Band and were the first to call themselves jass... and they started the style known as Dixieland, that everyone copied, so they later changed their name to ORIGINAL Dixieland Jass Band to let people know they were the originators of the Dixieland style... Papa Jack Laine's bands did not play Jazz anyways, or did they?It wasn't recorded so we'll never know.

It seems to me to be that the mainstream today likes to downplay and not acknowledge the enormouse impact White musicians and White/European styles had on American music like Jazz and Blues. For instance there would be no Jazz if it were not for Classical and Marching Band and there have been many very influential White Jazz players from day one. But yet they still call it "Black music" and ignore the White influence...

The origins of jazz are: Blues (the way the trumpets were played in jazz is very reminiscent of the blues) Ragtime European Classical Marching bands/Military music & to a lesser extent, black spirituals. Jazz is the "True American Music", because although it was almost exclusively created by blacks (despite being played early on by white musicians), it has influence in both Old Europe and Old Africa, but it is something that could ONLY come into being in America.

You guys forgot about Earl Fuller's Famous Jazz Band, they started recording in 1917, and there sound is closer to the style of The Original Dixieland Jazz Band than the others you mentioned! Still I'd have to agree that of all of the bands that recorded in 1917, ODJB was the best!

You might be right, but what about the comparability I mentioned? None of those orchestras reached the quality of LaRoccas boys, they even didn´t play jazz at all but tango(Borbee) or appeared first after the ODJB had established their fame. Unfortunately this seems to be a never ending discussion, which is worth to be cleared by professional historians. I hope this will happen in 2017.

This cartoon represents of one of Tex Avery's strongest pieces. Amazing heavily stylized animation along with simplistic but extremely well designed backgrounds. One of the things I liked about this cartoon was that they took the risk of making Droopy out of character. He wasn't slow or fat or even looked old. In fact, he looked like a young pup.
