..anyway, as I was saying. I'm a singer myself, doing a Bachelor of Music in contemporary voice & there are some things which aren't important to the music itself, but to one's performance. Making at least a small amount of eye contact is one of them, & one of the most important aspects to a performance (I mean the performance side, not the music, which is obviously the most important) My tutor & other professional musicians I've learnt from are constantly reminding me & my fellow singers this.
