My last comment was a reply to waypoint36' comments from 4 days ago, sorry, I just sent it generally. Actually, regarding those comments and cowgirl22hannah's, a droop in the rein might(not always!)mean the horse has been over-bitted and/or rolkurred. A happy horse actively seeks contact with the bit, as it trusts the rider's hands will support a flow of energy and direction. Sometimes the weight of the reins alone suffice for contact, and no more action is required from the rider's hands.

Many years ago one of my riding instructors told me that when you hold the reins, you must hold them as if you are also holding a baby bird in each hand... that is how gently you must treat the horse's mouth.

The mistake that is being talked about happened after the canter half-pass into pirouette. The horse was suppose to begin 1 time tempis (flying change every stride). It is visible in the second and third stride out of the pirouette. I hope that helps. This is a beautiful ride and near perfect performance and demonstrates beautifully the difficulty in perfecting harmony.

Every sport has poorly ridden horses. If we consider only well-ridden dressage horses, there is not pain. There is a comfortable contact, again, like holding hands with someone you love. The reins may be straight, but that does not mean they are tight. And I don't think horses naturally do any sport we ask of them! :-)

oh. im not one of those oddballs that refuses bits but i can tell, some dressage horses are totally in pain. explain to me why the reins are tight then,without it hurting. maybe there isnt so much pressure but they are definitely tight. Horses do not naturally carry themselves thisway

proper rein pressure has been described as holding hands with a lover - it is neither wimpily uncommitted, nor is it an abusive stranglehold. Many years of training create the self-carriage you see - the rein pressure is not ANYTHING close to what non-dressage riders think it is. You'll see gaping mouths and unhappy horses when poorly ridden with too much contact.

I will not be drawn one way or another on training in dressage as: 1. I only compete once a year and only ride at weekends so don't have much experience, and 2. I don't think that one method of training is neccessarily better than the other. Surely you can be classical and use parts of modern training and vice versa, or do people get so hung up on this argument that they are blind to the opinions and biews of others?

I don't think its over flexed as the horse's head is still on the vertical, only if the horses head is behind the vertical then its over flexed. This friesian also has a very thick crested neck so i think that is why it seems to be over flexed.

I'm very impressed! She controls the horse merely with her weight/seat. That's certainly good body tuning! But there's something I don't like... the curb bit's shanks are totally horisontal - not vertical. It puts a great amount of pressure on the horse's tongue. I think she has attached the reins too tight :o(

Hmmm, apparently computer monitor quality varies for the below "commenters" to your entry. She does INDEED have the reins attached to two silver buckles on the front of her pants. see 2:19-2:21 and 2:32-2:47. Clear as DAYLIGHT. It's still amazing...no tail-swishing and the horse does marvelously. Really artistic.

You are correct at the fact that she is a true horsewoman,and beutiful rider.The comment about the reins is also correct.The pommel is much lower than the line if the rein which is in fact,attached to her.She is using her seat and her lower body to direct the horse.Her arm motion also help her steer(her arm and hand movements change her body position)but she does a beautiful job with theatrics to disguise it.The horse is well schooled and the woman is beautiful on a horse.Excellent demonstration

And she is driving the horse with the delicate balance and shifting of her SEAT. It is so subtle that you can not see it. That is how skilled of a horseman she truly is.

Can anyone else varify this below? This fantastic performance is by Belinda Narin-Wertman a couple of years ago in Holland at the 125th(?) anniversary celebration of the Friesian Stud Book. The horse is Goffert. Belinda is a former Olympic rider and trained and rode Goffert to Grand Prix... the first Friesian to reach this level. Quite an accomplishment! Sadly, Goffert suffered a sever colic in Feb of 2007 and had to be euthanized.

Minimun 300.000euros for a friesian - that's just stupid!! I know a couple of people who have imported friesians from the Netherlands, and the did not pay that kind of money.. Yet the horses are amazingly beautiful, with a good pedigree and really nice dressagehorses..

It's the skill that makes complex things easy. I've never ridden dressage, but I can understand it demands cool head and lots of training. It's true it doesn't take 10 years to teach a dog do 'few tricks', but the dogs usually live 10-15 years. So it's stunning to see a 2 year-old dog to run a complex agility course or freestyle routine. And you can get dog training as complex as you want. Watch some Crufts HTM videos and then try to teach the tricks to a dog and then perform them.

@ Asiasaysthnkyvrymc: I'm from Austria (neighbour country of germany) And I can say that here in Europe almost everyone who owns a friesian (and a lot of people own one) does dressage with these horses. lots of them do higher levels. Friesians are very famous in europe and they are very, very, very expensive - minimum 300.000 ?. There are also competitions only for friesians. These horses are so talented especially for dressage.

I ride an 8year old Friesian gelding and do dressage at the lower levels. I live in South Africa and in our country Friesians are not considered promising dressage prospects. As a matter of fact most dressage pros think the only thing a Friesian is good for is a carriage horse.There are a few exceptional riders trying to change opinions but its really hard. Does anybody here ride at higher levels on a Friesian?

Look at some other videos of Friesian horses. What Ifind so remarkable there is that they are so beuatiful in their movements even when they are riderless and just frolicing around on the meadow. Noble beasts indeed. It was the Friesians which carried the Teutonic Knights into the Holy Land, easy to imagine. After all, those knights were heavy and the path was long... Now don't blame the horses or give me some negative comment. I am only referring to the Friesian beauties.

Im tellin you right now, it takes hard work for a person to build up muscles, trust me. Now i have done barrel racing, and trust me, its alot more work to do dressage then barrels. 1 week to learn barrels, Years to learn dressage. Ive seen horses become gate shy because all you do is run them, not much training is involved in barrels, but dressage is alot of training. Dont knock the discipline unless you try it!!!

Dressage = long stirrups, Jumper = Short stirrups. Secondly, they're never "too long" unless the feet can't reach them. The piaffe and passage were BEAUTIFIL, with the best part being how low the haunches were and how far under the back legs are. Very rarely do you see these moves done CORRECTLY, like in the video. Modern dressage = disgrace. This = art.

WOW! I am a young rider and I have been riding for about 9 years. I have always wanted to ride like that and be able to do everything that I do with a saddle but bareback. I think it was amazing seeing what you can do with your horse and it demonstrates a real partnership. Also I think that your horse was very relaxed and happy without a saddle.

i didnt mean to offend anyone by saying the horse looked unhappy, believe me i love my horse so much and i am all for doing things naturally, but it is my opinion and i am staying by that. sorry if i have offended you, im not against the video, what the rider is getting the horse to do is amazing, but its my opinion.

mental/emotional health of my horses is a priority certain clues: ears, tail, displaced behaviors but cannot be taken in isolation: what is the expression on the face of the human runner as he is doing the race? Perhaps not a general 'happy smile' although the athlete would rather be in that moment than anywhere else! ears forward could mean desperation, ears back could mean focus at liberty and bridleless he has a big opportunity to leave if he does not like it. i am happy he chooses to stay!

Great vid! Personally I think the comments about the horse being unhappy are a little unfounded due to the fact that it would have been way too easy to dislodge his rider to rid himself of the "unhappiness" lol! Sometimes the ears back position can mean he is finding the work challenging (and also listening to the rider as said before) but he had every opportunity to say "no" and chose not to- what fantastic two-way communication!

I agree with others. This horse is not unhappy, he's concentrating. To offer those sort of movements without a bridle means this horse is in tune with his rider. This is dressage in it's purest form! No need for keeping the horse "on the bit" with hard hands and unnatural training aids. He offers it!

I had the chance to visit Casa Lusitana on August 31, 2008 and was delighted to see Jorge Gabriel ride! He his a true gifted rider and he reminded me of Nuno Olivera. Very nice stable and nice people too!!! I took like 1000 pictures in the 4 hours I was there!!!

This is what harmony between rider and horse is all about! better than this only the great Master Nuno Oliveira! I am Portuguese and am nothing but proud to see all the comments made about Lusitano Horses and the rider. What saddens me is that many times such horses and riders are not enough appreciated in our country and need to go other countries to be appreciated and get their work recognised. People get so bent out of shape if a horse comes slightly behind the vertical. Of course the ideal is to have a horse perfectly balanced and soft on or SLIGHTLY in front of the vertical, but if you had to err one way or the other, I would rather see a horse slightly behind and soft over his topline (as long as he is still working into the contact, like this horse) than too much in front and bracing the underside of his neck and consequently his back, becoming hollow. Just my opinion.

U don't need rollkur on the average lusitano stallion, they curl up their necks out of their own accord. Actually, the problem is convincing them NOT to curl up so much! I've been working the same stallion for a year and he still goes behind the vertical on a loose rein with a Dr. Cook bitless! only way to make him go above is doing counted walk O_o...

he is a little behind..however still engaged and through his back so he is not beind the bit or evading the contact..he is a very nice example of the breed and this is a common issue with them and Andalusians...they are built like that....he is also ..7 most GP horses are 12!!!

I have had my first horse about 5 years; ridden off and on about 3; had a dozen or so riding lessons and good advice from clinicians. It may be obvious to some that the rider is abit out of balance-looking; however the horse is in training; good horses always probly are. If this was a dressage show his form probly wouldnt be so exaggerated. It takes alot of skill and ohysique for such demanding riding, and the one-step lead changes are very kool!

Nice horse, but you can see in some parts that the horse is trying to go deeper, but the rider is preventing it. You don't always have to have a horse in a frame for it to work correctly and to look beautiful. This horse would sell needlessly.

none of us should be judging this video unless you aree at the riding level these riders are at. I personally like casa lusitana because my lusitano gelding Tequiero was from there and his sire is Ultra do Castanheiro. So unless you ride at their level and have good standing credentials, think before you speak, yes opinions or views, but dont judge. Any wayz who am i to talk 2 u, im only training at intermediaire 1.

he actually has nice gaits, he is just a little lazy in the trot..look at the cross over in his hindlegs in the half pass it couldnt get much better however his bend through the rib cage would give him a more exaerated angle..the changes would be straighter if the rider didnt through his body from side to side..the new lead comes from the new outside leg sliding back..oh yeah and its an extended canter not a gallop
