I think you capture it perfectly. There was no cable back in the day. I remember seeing his ABA highlights on Wide World of Sports. That is why I am a 76ers fan(not sixers, damnit). He was like an alien. We didn't see his every move. Now days if Kobe sneezes we hear about it. My final comment is on Julius as a man. He has given to charity his entire life and prepared for his life after basketball. He is THE role model.

he did it even if there was just 1,000 fans or 40,000 fans, he would do his magic act for you no matter what, back then not all games were documented so today you cant see half the moves he used to do, he would put in layups while in midair and defy gravity while in one motion flick the ball under your arm pits and into the hoop(against sidney moncreif/brian winters of milwakee bucks). and dunk on all centers of the nba.he was like shaq wen he dunked,unstoppable.he was a hero back in phily/world

i really wish i was around to watch this guy stand out like he does. There's several of him these days, with everyone dunking and doing wicked shit. Sure there's superstarts but i agree, you wouldnt even watch the game, you'd literally just watch him the entire time.... i'd imagine

Not the best ever player? OK. But no doubt the best ever to watch. The anticipation of the magic to come was too much. You couldn't even watch the games cuz your eyes are glued to him. You'd rather watch the Doc hunched over, hands on knees observing the play, ready to explode, than watch the game. I wonder how many fans walked away wondering what the score was, or if the home team won?. No-one had that kind charisma or presence, ever. The otherworldly grace? Unmatched. Simply the best.

rolly,,tru dat, i saw doc do that at philly spectrum all time..he would do it on 3 guys sometimes..he had long arms and big hands so it was easy for him. the ball was like size of tennis ball for doc. dr.j made crazy moves that werent captured on film due to limimted nba exposure back then.

He added schoolground finese and great leaping ablilty and took the NBA to new levels that the game had never seen until he come through... This list is kinda weak..I used to see Doc posterize fools with dunks at least twice a game..Some of them cats, man they just didn't have a clue. What were they thinking? Oh, here comes Dr J. with the ball in the open court--I can stop him. riiigghhhtttt Doc got his name from back in the day at Rucker when the people who saw him dominating other playground legends, said he was "Operatin' on people like a doctor." That means the cat had the skill of a surgeon when he had the rock in his hands.

I don't know if any more than 5,000 people saw it but my dad took me to see Doc when Philly came to Chicago in the late 70's. My dad used to love to tell this story so I'll do my best..... the Bulls sucked in those days so the crowd was small even for the Doctor. Anyway in the 2nd 1/2 Doc got his shot blocked by Artis Gilmore and the Bulls scored on a fast break. Doc demanded the ball and proceeded to drive through the length of the floor and ended the play with a ferocious dunk over Gilmore!!!!

Thank you. It cannot be the 1971 All-Star game, since Erving's first season was in 1971-1972, with the Virginia Squires of the ABA. Maybe it is from 1972 or 1973? His 1st year with the NBA was during the merger of the 2 leagues in 1976-1977 and I was 11 years old and became a fan of the NBA. I was cheering for 76ers. About the dunk, all that is shown in replays is the end dunk over Walton. But not the entire sequence where he dribbled past everybody. So I thank you for showing this!

This game in particular was showed during the look-out of the 1999 NBA season, when the competition was blocked, but in this case they didn't put "in the voices of Spanish commentators announcing as if it is a live game". Doc was a great finisher because he once said that he knew that for him to get paid well for a living playing ball he knew had had to squeeze himself between that rim and himself, he had to finish strong and that meant slamming it when ever posible to make sure it went in.. or making up moves so the ball would go in. thats why he was so exiting to watch because he was driven by his moto, either do it or go home hungry,not get paid well. he lived with that moto all his b-ball career.

yes best ever, he also had the grace of a ballet dancer, i watched him play for 908 games( 11 years) in philly and i never saw him fall to the ground not more than 5 or 7 times. unlike todays players when they fall down just shooting jumpers or layups. doc would get hammered in mid air and would still land on his feet and not fall, barely did he fall to the ground, he had the grace of a ballerina.i miss his game.

Looking at Jordan's style, its clear that many of his dunks had an Erving quality to it. Even his leaner which Doctor J had done at least 6 years earlier, leaning into the Big E chest to chest and cramming it. Jordan expanded that dunk. Nothing wrong with that, it captivated a nation but perhaps fooled a generation into thinking Jordan was an originator. He repackaged a lot of Erving's moves to be honest. Actually I have seen both play and clearly Julius Erving is the best above the rim player of all time. It's that simple. Doctor J dunked from the foul line in games and has many dunks players today still can't do. Very nice video. The 1 handed stab, curl behind his back and float in from the foul line for a finger-roll is my favorite. That was against the Bucks in the Playoffs. And there was the Windmill Slam Dunk on Bird, Robey & Cowens where his head was over the rim. That was in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Nobody was like the Doctor!

Hey Alex2363, I was lucky enough to grow up in a farm town in Indiana. The Pacers were it and we got to see them on TV and highlights of the ABA on the News. Basketball was king in Indiana! When the Doctor showed up I became a fanatic and collected scrap books of Dr. J stories and photos. Still got em. Dr. J in the ABA was like an Eagle Soaring over a Canyon. People don't realize how spectacular and awe inspiring the Doctor was. We rooted for the Pacers and the Doctor to score 50.

ndmike you one lucky man to experience all that, i wish you would have recorded it for us hardcore doc fans,lol...i think i saw that brian winters play too. plus the other one he made between the arms of sindney moncrief and winters. he went up stayed in the air forever (and nowhere to go)when both bucks put their arms up to defend doc went between their armpits and flicked it in, the ball looked like it vanished but it went in the hoop like magic...it was awsome.

#3 I got tickets for Christmas for Moses Malone's first game back at the Houston Summit after the trade to Philly. The Doctor scored 29 in the first half but the play of the game was the Doctor did an around the world flying one hander over a Rocket player that hit the floor right in front of me so hard that the ball ripped over my head at what seemed like 300 MPH. I had Floor seats under the basket.

In the ABA the Doctor had a blocked shot where he went to block a fastbreak on the left side of the rim when the player passed to a player on his right and the Doctor did a 180 while in the air and blocked the layup on the right side with his left hand. The play was against the St. Louis Spirits. Never saw anything like it!

The Doctor is the only player I have ever seen to block a shot, get the rebound and pass off for an assist without touching the ground. He did it on Brian Winters of Milwaukee in the playoffs. Winters was on the left side going up for a jump shot when the doctor jumped from just to the right of Winters and blocked the shot, grab the ball while in still in the air and hit Maurice Cheeks with a behind the back pass for a layup down court and he never touched the ground during the entire play.

he was a great shot blocker too. i think he made the best blocks i seen in a player. he would block a shot and make it look like he was swatting a fly. and he would make those blocks mostly when the game was on the line. i don't know why he never made more all defense teams. his steals and blocks always

In the old ABA, he had to rally his team against San Antonio and 7 foot Artis Gilmore, a very good center back then. It was the 4th quarter...Doc took it to the rim...and dunked OVER a leaping Artis Gilmore for the deciding basket. Yeah, MJ was great. But Doc was poetry in motion...He just looked better doing it. AND HE WAS (IS) SO DAMN CLASSY!

The thing about the Doctor is that he was so graceful, using just enough force to make for great posters in bedrooms all over America. MJ was spectacular, of course, but he always seemed to be working so hard, making such an all-out effort. The Doctor was just too cool to break a sweat.
