Too true, AmethystMC; right in the same vein as Eddie Cochran and Link Wray. Had no idea who Duane Eddy was until I read a brochure from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Got on YouTube, and, of course, have heard all these tunes, but didn't know it was Duane Eddy! Shame on me. Am somewhat more "up" on Eddie Cochran. Eddie, Duane, Link, Pete Townshend....Damn Straight!

I saw them at Cobo also, in 1973. Bought all the tickets I could and told my friends, "You're goin'!" Best concert ever... Berry had just been replaced, but they didn't try to bring another guitar in for Duane. Brought a keyboard player instead. Amazing drumming

No slide there, impossible to play those licks. bthoma1 stands correct and not corrected. IMHO some of Duanes most incredible playing is not on the slide. He just happened to be amazing on slide too. The thing about Duane, is that he could bend a note to make it sound like a slide, not an easy task as a guitar player. But he did it.

IMHO, Pete is consistently underated as a guitar player. Go back and listen to Quadrophenia and Live At Leeds and tell me he can't top Chuck Berry. Or, if you don't like Pete, let's go with the guy who failed to make the Rolling Stone top 100--the Motor City Madman. Or for a real dark horse, how about Terry Kath? To judge him fairly, try the original CTA album and (especially) live at Carnegie Hall (Called Chicago IV - the original boxed set!)

The Tube only ever allowed genuinely live bands. Dead or Alive were famously kicked off because they couldn't do it. It shows the skill of Art of Noise (Duane Eddy needs no proof) to play under very crowded, difficult conditions and play flawlessly.

But Les Paul did build one of the first solid body guitars, trying to get around...feedback. Les Paul had all his fingers. He was in a car accident and injured his right (picking) elbow, and it was basically bolted at the proper angle to play his guitar. That might what you're referring to. "After the crash, doctors told Paul that they'd have to set his arm such that he would not be able to bend it again. He had them position his arm at a ninety degree angle so he could still play guitar". (From Wikipedia)

I had no idea he could finger pick this well! I always just thought of him as playing simple single note runs with plenty of bends, a touch to the Bigsby now and then , and lots of reverb and 'vibrato' out of his Fender Twin amp. Wow!

Actually, they were very much a team and were in all the same bands together since high school. The bulk of Duane's session work, and his aborted solo album, were recorded in late '68 during a brief break between their last band, The Hour Glass, and their next Band, The Allman Brothers Band. Though Duane did manage to find time to continue his session work with ohers after the formation of he ABB--even with the Brothers' busy touring schedule.

John Fogerty was born and raised in California. "Born on the Bayou" is just a song. You may spend hours playing the guitar in your bedroom, but you still have to go out of the house and live in that environment. Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were both from Seattle. Their playing had a lot in common. John Fogerty may have southern roots in his music, but his sound was Southern Cal.

The California sound was the new Americana. A combination of country with the "twang" removed and rock with the hard edges taken away. Fogerty was from Berkeley CA. I agree that black blues guitarists did capture that northern metallic sound, but that is the exception. Singers like John Cougar and Bob Seger represented the Midwest perfectly, but in general, the white rock guitarists have missed the mark. If you listen to Canadian guitarists, you will hear that sound.

Janko, John Fogerty is a Cajun, and I think youre the ONLY one that hears Southern California of a CCR album. Also, Chicago has its own style of blues. All the old blues guitar players were from Chicago...the ones EVERYBODY wanted to be like...

Yeah, Leslie West played with a lot of emotion, but he was from Long Island which was a pretty laid back place during that time. He didn't really reflect his environment in his playing. He sounded like he came from Detroit. If you listen to someone like Beck or John Fogerty, you can hear almost hear Southern California. I just don't think that places like New York, Chicago or Detroit produced guitarists that painted a good picture of their surroundings.

Some people approach the guitar and music in general in the way bbsuzi23 does and it's analytical and usually cold and lacking in feeling. People like that just don't get it. "he relied on repetition, elongation, rhythmic displacement and retrograde to add variety to his playing." What a bunch of bullshit. I think suzi likes to hear himself (or herself) sound important. I am from a steel town in Ohio and knew some great local guitar players. They all had great technical skills but lacked capturing the local vibe. Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page all grew up within about 15 miles Heathrow Airport. It is like their playing was trying to drowned out the planes. Southern boys seem to incorporate the heat and laid back surroundings in playing. California pickers are also good at this (Rhodes, Fogerty and Van Halen). Nice Post, Thanks.

jack white, mayer, hendrix(seattle), there's a few of them around(white & mayer aren't the greatest). You're prolly right but it doesn't matter where you learn it, whether in Detroit or Macon. If you practice rigorously enough and listen to the right stuff you'll get there. Duane, clapton, SRV, they're all human. It's not like their level of skill isn't attainable. you gotta work at it

I don't understand the comparisons between so many different styles. Anyone strumming an instrument can appreciate what it takes to transpose what's in one's head into a sound box and come out feeling right. Duane had it. He was uncanny for hitting those 1/4 notes in slide, E or standard tuning. Listen to any version of "Statesboro Blues" w/Duane to know what I'm saying.He never played that song or any, for that matter, the same way. Not easy to do!

I'm a Yank but lived some time in the South and I tell ya that the average Reb is a better guitar player than his northern neighbor. That is why Duane was good to listen to. The Brits learned from the southern blacks, that is why Clapton and Allman mixed so well. Yankee pickers are too cold and calulated. Name one northern guitarist with feeling and passion.

I just purchased this cd set & was a little disappointed with the 2 jams they played together. Knowing what they are capable of, and how much their styles compliment each other, it seems like they are both holding back. Jam 1 though, is a different story. It's just Clapton, Whitlock, Radle and Gordon and I can't imagine Clapton (or anybody) getting any better than this. I can't stop listening to it. Stuck on a deserted island and given only one choice for instumental cd this would be it.
