What's really incredible about some of these is who the Doctor is dunking over--Kareem at 0:18, James Edwards at 1:02, and Bill Walton in his prime with the Blazers at 1:18. Plus, all of these are from when he was in the NBA, not in his younger ABA years when he could REALLY fly. Anybody who doesn't understand Doc's greatness needs to read "Loose Balls" by Terry Pluto, the best book ever on the ABA. You'll come away with a new favorite all-time player, even if you never saw him play.

Anyone who claims that Dr. J wasn't all that is just a dumb a(*ed kid who doesn't know sh*)!~!! Yeah, give me The Doctor!!!! Btw, this vid. isn't necessarily the very best shows Dr. J ever put on. His sky walks were his signature moves. He could take off before the top of the key and walk through the air to the basket while stunned opponents watched with their mouths hanging open.

I sometimes hear peoople say that these days so and so can do everything that The Doctor did, copy all of his moves, etc.. Then why doesn't he? Dr. J was not only the greatest 76'er ever, or even the greatest basketball player ever, he was the greatest, most beautiful, powerful, awe inspiring athlete that humanity will ever produce. Some of his aerial antics defy the laws of physics making one wonder if he was completely mere mortal human.

Look at the Doctor's smoothness and graceful motion. Some of it is like ballet. I don't think any other player had or has that quite like he did. No one has ever made it look so easy, so beautiful. It may not show on the scoreboard, but it's there and it's something that sets him apart from all the rest.

he was a great shot blocker too. i think he made the best blocks i seen in a player. he would block a shot and make it look like he was swatting a fly. and he would make those blocks mostly when the game was on the line. i don't know why he never made more all defense teams. his steals and blocks always led to points.

Julius was a great all-around player not simply an aerial artist. And an even better person. He continues to be an important chapter in the evolution of basketball. His teams never missed the playoffs, he has 3 championship rings (2 -ABA, 1 NBA), 4 MVPS, 3 consecutively, one of only 5 players with 30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 5,000 assists and MJ is not one of them. But the numbers don't tell the story. He was Captain Kirk, always boldly going to create and to win.

doc couldve been alltime basketball leading scorer if he wanted, drj had that nonstopable force when he drove the lane. he had finesse to squeeze layups on opponents and the power to slam on all power forwards and big centers, but drj never sacrifised stats for wins. drj was all around player with steals,assist,blocks,clutch shots ect. and made incredible shots to entertain us fans and keep his team in contention for championships for his entire playing career. he did all that with class/props

I think you capture it perfectly. There was no cable back in the day. I remember seeing his ABA highlights on Wide World of Sports. That is why I am a 76ers fan(not sixers, damnit). He was like an alien. We didn't see his every move. Now days if Kobe sneezes we hear about it. My final comment is on Julius as a man. He has given to charity his entire life and prepared for his life after basketball. He is THE role model.

i really wish i was around to watch this guy stand out like he does. There's several of him these days, with everyone dunking and doing wicked shit. Sure there's superstarts but i agree, you wouldnt even watch the game, you'd literally just watch him the entire time.... i'd imagine

Not the best ever player? OK. But no doubt the best ever to watch. The anticipation of the magic to come was too much. You couldn't even watch the games cuz your eyes are glued to him. You'd rather watch the Doc hunched over, hands on knees observing the play, ready to explode, than watch the game. I wonder how many fans walked away wondering what the score was, or if the home team won?. No-one had that kind charisma or presence, ever. The otherworldly grace? Unmatched. Simply the best.

The announcer is the legendary Chick Hearn who passed away several years ago. He didn't terribly excited about the dunk because his team was losing. I remember seeing this dunk on "live" TV. It was the most awesome dunk I had ever seen. And still is.

Hey Alex2363, I was lucky enough to grow up in a farm town in Indiana. The Pacers were it and we got to see them on TV and highlights of the ABA on the News. Basketball was king in Indiana! When the Doctor showed up I became a fanatic and collected scrap books of Dr. J stories and photos. Still got em. Dr. J in the ABA was like an Eagle Soaring over a Canyon. People don't realize how spectacular and awe inspiring the Doctor was. We rooted for the Pacers and the Doctor to score 50.

The Doctor is the only player I have ever seen to block a shot, get the rebound and pass off for an assist without touching the ground. He did it on Brian Winters of Milwaukee in the playoffs. Winters was on the left side going up for a jump shot when the doctor jumped from just to the right of Winters and blocked the shot, grab the ball while in still in the air and hit Maurice Cheeks with a behind the back pass for a layup down court and he never touched the ground during the entire play.

It was the 4th quarter...Doc took it to the rim...and dunked OVER a leaping Artis Gilmore for the deciding basket. Yeah, MJ was great. But Doc was poetry in motion...He just looked better doing it. notice how Dr. J when he does the first dunk, he takes 3 steps but his poetic movement makes up for it, thats not what i'm trying to say tho, what i'm try to say is, Dr. J when he dunks, he never shouts, his mouth is closed when he's dunking, and after he's done dunking, no shouting no kicking no punching (the air) no nothing, just a BEAUTIFUL dunk and a get back on defense play... that's what i luv about the Dr. also MJ said Dr.J inspired him!

The Doctor from behind the backboard was incredible. I saw him get a blocked shot, rebound and assist all in one move without touching the ground. Greatest play of all time! The Eastern Conference Finals windmill slam dunk over Robey, Bird and Cowens where the doctor swung the ball from his ankles was never duplicated. The Doctor has at least 30 other plays that belong on this list.

Tough question...that's like asking what are my 3 favorite notes by Stevie Wonder. But if I gotta choose...1) there's the coast to coast dunk on Walton in the 77 Finals, Gm 6. 2) "The Shot" vs the Lakers in the 80 Finals, Gm 4. And 3) a baseline drive, behind the backboard, windmill, off glass, "and 1", finger roll, on Kareem in 77 at The Forum. I'm sure someone who saw him in the ABA would say those moves were routine but those are my 3 (for now)

"the fish that saved pittsburgh" was docs only movie,it basically showed doc taking a team to the championship and win it all without the help of this zodiac fortune teller and lucky charm kid that were both kidnapped to prevent docs team from winning it all. still docs killer moves and defense helped his team win it all. its a comedy that showcases docs b-ball moves (and mostly in slow motion in the playground scene)

I hear you Byron, Doctor J is no slouch either when it comes to mvps . Again its pretty much even. Bird 3 titles, J 3 titles, Bird 3-time consecutive MVP, Erving 3-time consecutive MVP (ABA)+ 1 NBA MVP. I've always wondered by Doc didn't get on the NBA defensive team like Bird did. Philly had those great defensive teams in the early 80s and everyone else got on it seemed except Doc, who had at least 10 seasons with 100 steals and blocks in the same season. Birdman has several all defensive nods.

I think its a tie between Doc and Bird, with Baylor a hair behind. They balance each other out, and its only because Bird had the better team that the perception is he's better. But the Celtics and Sixers split their playoffs 2-2, their regular season is a virual split (celts ahead by a few games). Talent wise, they canceled each other out. Erving was 6 years older then Birdman as well, as Bird was peaking in 84 Erving was in his twilight. When J was peaking, Bird was a rookie.

I understand the respect given 2 Bird & MJ, but declaring someone the greatest anything always starts a debate. What do you base it on, game/ability?, rings?, stats? or is it a combo of the 3? Some might argue w/ u & say Hondo was the greatest swingman ever. Besides Doc didn't really play the 2 until his last 2 years after players got a little bigger & 2 make room for Barkley at the 3. Now before Jordan fanboys get in a snit, understand that I am a Jordan fan as well, but facts are facts. Part of Jordan's legacy is taking the all-around game of Doctor J, and taking that to the next level. Desire, heart, will to win as well. Now Doctor J in warmups in his ABA days in a layup line off a one foot takeoff, and with 2 hands tap the top of the square with the ball and dunk it. Yes, off a one foot takeoff. Looking at Jordan's style, its clear that many of his dunks had an Erving quality to it. Even his leaner which Doctor J had done at least 6 years earlier, leaning into the Big E chest to chest and cramming it. Jordan expanded that dunk. Nothing wrong with that, it captivated a nation but perhaps fooled a generation into thinking Jordan was an originator. He repackaged a lot of Erving's moves to be honest. Yes, he added a few nice moves of his own but he was hardly the creator Doc was.

Actually I have seen both play and clearly Julius Erving is the best above the rim player of all time. It's that simple. Doctor J dunked from the foul line in games and has many dunks players today still can't do. He had one such dunk that Doug Collins mentioned during the 92 or 93 dunk contest that he asked Jordan if he could do. The Doctor from out of bounds somewhere behind the basket took off and dunked the ball. Jordan could not do the dunk. Only Vince Carter's theatrics can be compared now
