Beyonce is a "good" singer, and maybe, someday she will be a "great" singer. I know you won't want to hear it said that way but terms like "great", "best" and "icon" are thrown out like crack cocaine at Bobby Brown's house. The producers set out to make cadillac records a hit and I think they are doing just that by casting Beyonce as Etta James. No other singer could cause such hysteria over a damn song but Beyonce. Make no mistake about it the originals are usually best song by the originators but Bey made this song her own and did a very soulful rendition of it. she didn't try to mimic the Great Etta. But if it wasnt for Bey many youngsters would not know about Ms. Etta. & that's the double truth ruth!!!

I just think people need to give her(Bey) a chance. If they won't, then don't watch the movie. And as for singing, Beyonce lower register is very strong and her voice period has matured even from 2006. Will it be as good as Etta, probably not. But I don't think a professional actress could fully do it either. Unless, they dub Etta's voice. I just think people need to give her a chance, rather than saying what Bey can't do.

I get what you are saying. I am a fan of both(Bey and Etta) and even Etta at first said that she had some tepidations. But I think part of the problem is how people percieve Beyoncé. I like what Stokley from Mint Condition said about her. That underneath the commericalism and image, is a real artist. I agree. I had the honor of meeting Etta at her home. A friend and I had always been fans and so as we were driving through Morganton, we called Etta to see if we could drop by and say hello. Beyonce will sing the songs in her own way and I don't think will be able to reach down for the one and only Etta James sound. How sad is the state of Hip Hop when the 20 year joints are light years ahead of the current sh*t.(With the exception of Em, Kanye, Wu, Outkast, and a few others that actually built on the contribution of True MC's like Jeff.
