I agree of course. I realize I didn't express myself well: mine was a positive comment. "Terrible" in the positive sense.. terribly well written and inspiring a sort of horror atmosphere in perfect theme with hell. "Funny" in sense that this endless progression has some grotesque characteristic and must be fun to perform (once the pianist dedicated time to study it, of course).

I've never heard any Ligeti before, but this piece has piqued my interest. "Imagine: You're in hell, and you want to get out." That simple line paired with the piece conjured up a frightening image of running as fast as you can up "the devil's staircase", the devil right at your heels, and never being able to reach the top.... O.o

When people hear astonishing Richter's performance, they expect for great dynamics too, but i don't think that it is the main detail of it, etudes were designed to show the best techinue you can come up with, it is like an exercise to fingers, and you should first pay attention on the performance, not dynamics&emotions.

This video shows the whole Richter. His strengths as well as his weaknesses. His strengths are... well his strength, his dexterity and technique, always impressive, but this is his main weakness, too. Sometimes his perfomances lack emotion, depth, not allowing any weakness. He sure is most competent master of his trade, he's more like mace windu than yoda (which would then have to be horovitz;-)

To all the people who obviously know nothing about this etude:maybe you should read something before you write your opinion down.Chopin was in Austria when he wrote this.He heard about the failure of the polish revolution..many of his friends died and there was no chance for polands independence.this etude is full of anger and despair and on the sheet it says legatissimo.this is why in my opinion richter version is perfectly played and not too fast at all.sry for my broken english.

i think you also have to work on your lower arm muscles. 'cause when i try to play a very fast piece that's what gets all tight. but i wouldn't know how you train those :p oh and don't play it over and over again even though it hurts. its better to do what you can and get better day by day. if you get what i mean (english isn't my native language so sorry if im saying weird things)

This piece is very difficult. Play about three hours a day for months before trying it. Also I suggest you walk and jog and even do push-ups. AVOID junk food at all costs. Caffiene keeps you awake but will numb your fingers.

While this isn't my favorite performance of the piece, calling it not "Chopinesque" confuses me. He was a composer of the romantic period, when the virtuoso was a rock star, and the music reflected that. Chopin doesn't have as many "flashy" passages as Liszt, but virtuosity suits his music perfectly, especially the etudes, and I don't have any trouble hearing the beautiful harmonies and running notes when played fast.

Sure he's expressing something, but every major pianist like him could be much more "Chopinesque" about playing these pieces. It's always frustrating for me to hear, for example, Kissin's recording of Chopin's Bbm Sonata and notice that the first movement is a race to the finish. Such beautiful and noble music, and they pound and race through it (I love Kissin, though)! I have always tried to play Chopin as sophisticated, noble, reserved, and above virtuosity as possible. No pompousness here.

I find watts live performance of this, at this paticular moment, rather dazzling, stormy, the aggresive colors, showing more than any slow-mannered or an over emphasis on the right hand melody like other virtuosos playing for the sake of virtuosity. I don't understand all this discussion about "interpretation"... The instructions for the performer are right on the score, in plain black and white, and the phrase structure is clear in Chopin. The pianist's job is to play the piece with clarity and with some sense of nuance and tone color, rather than as a "virtuosic" trainwreck that shows off how fast one can play.

Watts is just "tossing it off" here, that is obvious. I would'nt consider this at the "recording" level. I first heard him doing the Brahms 2nd at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC and spent the next two days in a daze... It was a mega-watt performance.

It seems like the best interpretations of the Romance composers (minus Beethoven - Brendel is the master of him) and even later virtuoso pieces all come from either: 1. Cziffra, 2. Richter, or 3.Hofmann (possibly the greatest since Liszt himself, not enough recordings to determine though). All the other greats lack at least one of the following necessities: speed, power, clarity, emotion, rubato mastery, or relative creativity.

thanks for the reply. Yes, you are right Chopin's studies are virtuoso stuff, and Ashkenazy is a wonderful interpreter. Perhaps I would have been better to have listened to him while he was originally learning this etude. I do teach a few pupils on piano and am a believer in practising pieces slowly until memory of all the notes kicks in. Only then can such etudes be played as the composer intended. I also admire the skills of Boris Berezowsky, Evgeny Kissin, and Christian Zimmerman, regards D

when i play this, on the descending parts my fingers are slightly out of legato with my thumb, that is, it's difficult to control even note lengths. When playing on a heavier-actioned piano, it actually seems easier to control. all the "louder touch" needs is a little extra arm weight and doesn't make it harder to play, but then, the piano's not my first instrument so mebbe talking garbage lol

Oh I agree. Musical historians will concur with the notion that Chopin loved Rubato. I think, though, too much Rubato can change the mood of the piece. Everyone is different though. Horowitz's rendition was supreme, in my opinion. Many people will disagree.

Okay, now that we have that over with...All I was saying is that I do thing Yngwie can shred with the best of them. He rocks!! But his music over the years has gotten more and more predictable...He used to do stuff more like this, Evil Eye, and Fuguetta and now almost all of his stuff sounds the same (to me)...When I think of Yngwie I think of the him that is preserved in the 80's and this video...That's all I was saying.

He doesn't play them exactly as written, actually he plays all the basses, but he skips the three chords the left hand has to play in between of the bass notes. He just plays one chord instead. Doesn't seem to harm this striking interpretation though

Does anyone know which score he is playing? I have the Dover score, which seems to differ on some points from this one. For instance: in the middle, calm part of the etude, in my socre, the entire melody in the right hand consists of only octaves. But Horowitz is also playing the 7th in the chord (right hand), along with octaves-melody (see movie at 1:08-1:10 min.) Anyone know which score this is???.. Jos van Riswick

Irregardless of the comparison... I believe the fact that individuals who "dont know classical music" are ACTUALLY LISTENING to this beautiful music FAR exceeds comparing. So what if I only know Lang Lang, or if I was originally turned onto "Adagio For Strings" by the William Orbit and DJ Tiesto versions? The fact is, I'm LISTENING, as are they. Correct and suggest, don't blast. Otherwise, you fall deeper in the "mess" than the original poster.

I actually find it easier to play with closed eyes when performing- it takes my mind off the inevitable embarrassment that will ensue if I make a mistake! It helps memory, too- I just let my fingers do what they've done before without letting my brain interrupt and mess me up... resulting in the aforementioned humiliation etc.!

Very true, you make a good point. An easy way of saying that is "there's no accounting for taste." I heard him play Rachmaninov's third piano concerto at the CSO, and it was great! He didn't seem like it burdened him even a little bit. Not everyone will agree with his playing, though, whatever that means. :)

I agree, it's fast, but not "way too fast". It's so stormy and so appassionato, and the left hand is so fluid and smooth, that I can't help but feel that this is the way that Chopin intended it to be played, and you just can't get this stormy feel without a fast playing. Just my two cents.

The way he plays is great, the interpretation of this particular etude is off. It's too fast. It isn't a marathon to the end of Op. 10. Listen to how Lugansky or Pollini play it: much more controlled and expressive. But he played it as an encore, so, big pianists like to show off their stuff with a piece like this.

I thought about Richter when I wrote the above, and, of course. Richter is one of the greatest. A personal story: when I was in HS, I had a German buddy. He and his mother had retreated with the Wehrmacht from Odessa in 1944. (They were in Dresden during the fire storm). The mother grew up next door to Richter. Sviaty, she said, could never come out and play. He had to practice. Anyway, I like the turgid effect Bronfman gets in the left hand. It's a nice effect.
