when you buy a cd, the artist doesnt get the money, their label does. the artist only gets money through ticket sales at concerts unless, very rarely, their contract says otherwise. the recording industry as it used to be, is dying, because the people that deserve our money, isnt getting it, so artists like trent reznor are giving away their music for free, and making all their money on ticket sales and cds (which they now get all of the money from, because they dont use a label)
