of all the versions realeased of this movie with the rediculous soundtracks added to it..including Giorgio Moroders revolting 1984 soundtrack..this original fully restored print with the original 1927 Gotfried Hubertz is the most magnificent of all and bring a classic film back to it's original glory and how it was intended to be shown! well done to the restored version...that's the best version!

yes, thats exactly what happened. i guess it means that there will be soon a new metropolis where you can see that those intertitles of the 2002 restauration are replaced by 80 year old images! also, some scenes which you already know, thanks to this discovery, will have more shots from different angles you didnt know existed. unfortunately not all shots of the movie are there, but most of it at least. i was lucky to see them at an exposition here in buenos aires

When I first saw it in 2003, my movie history teacher told us that 25% of the movie was missing, the missing parts were filled in with "inter-titles" explaning the missing images. But if some new parts of the movie have been discovered in Argentina, that's great news!! ^^

Mendes, sou espírita, creio na reencarnação, mas não entendo como um exame desses pode ter sido feito, já que o corpo atual não tem nada a ver com os corpos das encarnações passadas, ou seja, o corpo físico desse voluntário não herdou nada dos corpos físicos dos antepassados que ele tinha em sua encarnação passada.

he hardly translated it - it was just much more usual to sing in the "local" language than the original in those days (especially slavic pieces). Even up to twenty years ago the opera school in Vienna performed all their productions in German! Sounds weird, but that's how it was. Sure, it can be annoying but there is also alot of sense in it - it can be quite refreshing to be able to understand an opera without surtitles.

I saw this film when I was in college. I went with a guy friend of mine and we both ended up leaving it before it was half-way over. There were many animated sex scenes in this one if I recall correctly. It wasn't funny--it was boring and a bit insulting to our intelligence. I had forgotten about it until I came across this clip.

Just the very best ever. Perfection of style and voice quality. What a loss! Thank goodness for recordings--catch him on Daphne, Mattaeus Passion, Capriccio (Italian tenor to die for with Popp--Pretre, live from Vienna), Weinachtsoratorium etc. Whole Tamino with Boehm-don't miss it. Ease of projection and interpretative genius make him for me the beat ever German tenor-did he record Lohengrin? Hope he and Corelli are living it up in tenor heaven!

No offense, but the master in my opinion, the golden voice of the century, was not Lanza, Pavarotti, Gigli or anyone else, but Enrico Caruso. You mention that Lanza sang TO you. That's a good ability. Caruso had gone a step further: he made you FORGET that he was SINGING. A quote from the director and conductor of the Berlin Opera: "There was just sonorous spirit manifesting itself in unforgettable dynamic nuances and emotional, lyrical shades."

His playing is so romantic, elegant, and beautiful that he must be regarded as one of the great violinists of all time. I'm playing this song for an audition and finding it much more difficult than it appears. Listening to this recording is very inspirational. I'm sick of people saying songs are "overplayed" in the sense of being over-expressive. Following the notes on sheet music with this recording, you realize how very human music can be, and how notes are only a crude way of passing musical thought from one person to another.

At request, another moving Kreisler upload, the famous "Méditation de Thaïs" from Jules Massenet's homonym opera. On this recording, made for Victor on February 2nd, 1928, he was accompanied by pianist Carl Lamson.

You are welcome, terrifict13. He was bright and had many books of many different area of interests. He used the techniques called Potamento and Tempo Rubato, used by Schuert and other musicians. I think he had a lot of knowledge of music history as well, so he might have studied Schubert and used some technique which was popular at that time, that created his own tempo like now we are listening to. So, we know that his violin(music) is very unique that nobody can play like he did.

Kreisler was so smart as well as a gifted violinist. Unlike many violinists or musician, he was interested in science and so many other subjects. He was born in 1875, and first his tour of the US is in 1888/89. So, he was only 13 years old. When he was 15, he wanted to play in Vienna but turned down because his vibrato was so differnt and good, does not blended in the first violin section. So, sad Kreisler left music and studied to be a doctor. He served WWI. He was a good doctor as well.

I think you are right. The great Joan Sutherland has sung this way all of her career. Heifetz, on the other hand, has always tended high (as did Callas).

I did some research and found out that Massenet is one of his teacher. No wonder Kreisler is a great composer as well as talented violinist. Massenet must be so pround of his outstanding pupil, Kerisler. And, no wonder he can play this piece with care and application.

Jean-Paul Rempal was a doctor, too, then decided he preferred music. Just a coincidence. But its nice to see people who choose their passion for art over a sure and steady living. Of course I doubt that either Kreisler or Rempal starved, but most who make that choice probably do. My granfather was apparently a very gifted violinist. Family lore says he had the same teacher as Hubermann, & the teacher said grampa had more talent. But he decided to become a dentist, so we'll never know.

It does sound flattish on many of the long notes. But it also seems to me that the slightly flat notes sound warmer or more melancholy than if they were played at exactly the right pitch ... like a sigh of regret. Maybe it was part of Kreisler's aesthetic.

I don't really agree. Wunderlich would sing so, so much better than them, but he was a "mozartian" tenor, not a "bel canto" one, so there would have been place enough for both without true concurrence. And among the "three tenors", I find that Placido Domingo, in the 60's, 70's and 80's, had a great voice (not as achieved as Wunderlich's, though), and a great presence. I still remember my delighted fear, when child, seing him as Othello.

I know what you mean...(di Stefano) No one would have bought into the 'three tenors' garbage. His technique would have allowed him to sing brilliantly long after the other three retired. I've never heard a Tamino better than him...although Francesco Araiza did suprise me a lot, when I heard him sing it in the 90s...but still not the calibre of Wunderlich.

Interesting thought, but I'm not sure I follow you completely- I hardly think his living longer would have prevented them all from singing, they came a bit later- I'm sure he would have bit into their notoriety quite a bit though. It's quite rare to have such beauty of voice matched with such good technique. *sigh*

Ja, ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an Fritz Wunderlich. Er war einfach "sagenhaft"!! Unfortunately, life was incrediably cruel to him and Fritz only reached a lifespan of 33 years. Wenn einer so begnadet wie Fritz war und nur 33 Jahre lebte und is still regarded today, as one of the very best, I would have longed for him to see him at 60!
