A classic by some of the great pioneers of "West Coast Jazz." Mulligan, a brilliant composer/arranger as well as instrumentalist, is one of my all-time favorites. Many thanks for posting this. Those who wish to hear Mulligan play tenor sax should get the album, "Getz Meets Mulligan," recorded in 1957. These two greats switched instruments on the first several tracks. Mulligan had a terrific sound on tenor. Now...let's see...where did I put my beret and that book by Jack Kerouac? Ghs

Was hooked at age 16 when I first heard his Pacific Jazz quartet recordings (1953?). But didn't get to see him live until sometime in the 60's (a concert at UCLA's Royce Hall). Most memorable though was in the 90's in SF at Davies Hall with an obviously aging Dave Brubeck who, at one point, left the stage to Gerry whose comment was "I came to play!" (and did he ever!). I miss him.

Is this off of a video or something that is commercially available? How could I get a full copy of this video? I would love to be able to show the whole performance to my students. Mulligan had his bari goldplated around 1993 and he died in 1996, so for this to be added in the last ten months, it had to have come from somewhere. As far as horn recommendations go, get a Conn. They worked for Mulligan and Carney.

my sax teacher /mentor is always telling me stories about him. he's 90 this year and he once played with GM himself , and both of them are true legends. I recently sold my conn bari and got a new jupiter 900 series and theres an amazing ease to play it and the sound is fantastic and louder than the old conn i had.

I understand now that I was a bit cryptic. The session with Art Farmer that produced 'As Cath Can', also included 'Utter Chaos', and I am convinced that with this piece Mulligan & Farmer wanted to show Ornette that they as 'elder statesmen' could also play free if they liked. Please bear in mind that the recording session took place in 1960 at the latest, so the shock of Ornette's playing was still fresh.
