My age has nothing to do with this! I notice that you haven't responded to the facts that I stated. Kanazawa trained under Nakayama, who, was a "student" in Manchuria. That is another word for IMPERIALIST!!! Do you know what the Japanese did in Manchuria? The brutal occupation? Takahoshu University was a hotbed of Japanese militarism. So to claim I am "disrepectful" is to say that I should for get all the outrages put upon the Chinese. When get an education, then you respond.

It's always sad to encounter this type of view. Kanazawa is one of the greatest influences to martial arts today, and has been for many many years. I have trained with both Kanazawa and at Higaonna's Dojo in Okinawa, and they are certainly differences but to say Kanazawa's Karate is not a real martial art is not only hugely disrespectful, it's just plain wrong. Thankfully reading wikipedia doesn't qualify one to comment on such an inspirational person. BTW, your profile says you're 28.

As one who has breathed these heavenly arts for nearly half a century, I am saddened by the fact that so many don't realize that this isn't a real martial art. Shotokan was amputated from the real art of Okinawa Te. What Kanazawa is doing is a refined gymnastic version of kata. The movements of self defence as it was meant to be used to stop an opponent were taken out. Funakoshi,not a recognised Master by the Okinawa Te Masters turned this art into a school boy's exercise. Please realise this!

One thing that distinguishes Kanazawa from so many is that he elongates his movements to accentuate the bunkai. So many practictioners practice kata solely for show with no emphasis on the bunkai. Every movement that Kanazawa executes is bunkai based. I think he is phenomenal!!!! I hate competition kata.

Am I wrong to be disappointed at this kata? I know it is an instructional video, but I feel he could have done it better - head control is a bit sloppy at times, and I disagree with Jion080981 about the quality of the kime. As a teacher, I know that unless you are deliberately demonstrating what not to do, you should set as good an example as possible. Sorry if this upsets anybody, but I think Sensei Kanazawa could (and should) have done better than this! Compare with taffypaul's gojushihosho!

no es una equivocación, dentro de SKIF es Gojushiho Dai. Sho significa distancia de combate corta y dai distancia larga. Si analizas el kata verás no está equivocado. Se cuenta que en la JKA cambiaron el orden de los katas hace mucho tiempo debido a un error administrativo en un campeonato.

by transposing the names, it means that Kanazawa sees the best way to win kata competition for his students is seek the kata that looks best. That is NOT the way of TRUE Karate! It is just this type of self agrandizement that has turned this heavenly art into a farce! The greatest Masters had at most three or four students. Numbers of students means nothing! Kata must be natural, as breathing, or walking, without straining the organs or muscles. this is NOT an example of it!

che valdesi sia bravo non cè dubbio, ma secondo kanazawa è più fluido, "circolare". valdesi è esplosivo ma scattoso, lui invece è più armonioso. il decimo dan cmq è un titolo eminentemente onorifico che si dà non perchè si abbattono muri a testate ma per aver innovato o aver dato un contributo particolare all arte marziale e lo conferisce l imperatore.funacosci è morto 5 dan cmq

got you now, you mean the slap on the stomache with his hand... yeah the movements are stylised for effect but kata is open to interpretation so why not make it more accessible to a less understanding audience by make it more entertaining? Kata in essence isn't that applicable in a true power/defence/attacking role more a symbol. In itself its more like a story than an instruction. Know what I mean? I respect your point tho.

Rodrigo,comento aqui sobre o kata gojushiho sho do valdesi, o Luca Valdesi é um grande campeão mundial (WKF) e não é por acaso,porem sua grande especialidade é o kata gankaku,em se trantando deste gojushiho sho ele peca (1) com sua base zenkutsu-dachi um pouco alongada,(2) ryô ken zenpô e heikô ni nobasu, (3) ele não obedece a linha de embusen,que para um atleta de seu nível é uma falha grande (ao se executar qualquer um dos gojushiho sho ou dai tem que tomar cuidado com este detalhe, oss !

is it legitimate to allow novices to teach,then hide their true grade from paying students with a phoney black and white belt,no that is a discrace,getting your own students to give you a seventh dan (because nobody else would)advertising yourselves as a genuine self defense group,( using murdered children) i could go on and on,if you treated your own students with honesty and resect you might get some back in the karate world.

Hey hssp900 you are a disgrace. I did shotkan for 10 years and loved it then moved house. Did GKR for 10 years and loved it then moved again. Now back to doing shotokan again and loving it again. All styles have benefit. GKR is a legitmate style. Your rantings tell me you have missed many points of Karate. I suppose you also feel that Karate is superior to all other martial arts? Please if you do shotokan please grow up, otherwise you are a blight on karate & the shotokan style in particular

Kampfhamster- Keep in mind that the kata is going to vary slightly from style to style, teacher to teacher, and dojo to dojo. Just because it isn't identical to the way you were taught it doesn't mean it is incorrect, or for that matter, poorly executed. Ever take into consideration that you may have been taught a different version before you criticize other people's katas.

Your stances are better than mine; plus I don't agree that you are being sluggish - the pace of Goju varies according to the performer's concept of bunkai. If you really wanted helpful criticism: you need to be careful to complete fully each move that immediately precedes the biggest changes of stance; and (like others have noted) there's a bit too much grunting for my taste - a bt like Sharapova playing tennis!! But I'm another who'd appreciate seeing more of your kata performances. [Sandan]

Third, please leave out the loud breathing that sounds like your grunting or barking. I know tournament folks like to do this a lot to show the judges that they are breathing correctly; please don't do this, if you don't breathe properly, it will show in your performance of the kata, and if the judges can't see this then a first place trophy from these judges doesn't mean anything.
